Your Vision And MS
Over 60% of the MS affected people have eye problems

Update:Feb 2,2008 In most cases it is the eyes that
take you out of the driver's seat and forces you to give
up driving. The other parts of driving as a disabled
person can be covered with hand controls. Less
use of your eyes seems to go with normal progression.
I have been having difficulty keeping my eyes in focus.
I will make an appointment with my eye doctor soon. I have
had the difficulty before and usually the doctor either
just increases the prism built into my prescription or maybe
an increase in diapters. My reading part of the lens is
about 3 diapters.

I wonder if uncorrectable eyes could be the reason for
loosing my driver's license.I know my doctors are compelled
by law to Inform the Driver's license section of The DMV
They know I have primary progressive MS and they are not
surprised with any new developments us PPMS affected person
develop. RET 2/2/2008

The reading glasses I got originally which seemed
strong a few years ago are now just right.I tire
with reading just like I tire with walking.
And with walkin my eyes like always are a guide
to my total fatigue. As the day goes on If I'm
trying to do too much walking the legs get rubber
like and the eyes blurr. The whole body gets tired
and refuses to do any more. I find the only defense
to extend the day is being in a wheelchair or a
scooter .

Had trouble with your eyes? yes most of us
have had that trouble. Actually there are
basicly three things that can go wrong with
the mS person's eyes. I've had all of them
at one time or another. This was one of my
first difficulties, double vision and
blurred vision. Theses symptoms started
long before I had leg and foot drop.I just
didn't know what it was and I put up with
it since I was usually also tired.

My eyes have been my barometer of my MS
condition. As I get more fatigued the eye
problems start to come on. The blurr of
vision is first then double vision.

Actually your local library probably has thousands of
large print books you will find much easier to read.
My eyes become fatigued almost as quickly fatigued
as my legs do with excessive use.
There really with large print books no reason to
stop your love of reading.
Revised May 21,2006 RET

According to Randy Jose O.D., the director
of Delta Gamma Low Vision Services at the
University Of Houston.He says,
"there is much fluctuation of vision in
persons with MS"
Further he states, "With MS there are
dynamic vision difficulties with constant change"
In other words he is saying it is hard to
come up with a prescription for lens as our
eyes change almost hourly during the day.
I know mine do. Then He puts the following
as the three main problems we have.
"1. Optic Neuritis, which is an imflammation
of the Optic nerve. With the optic nerve
being imflammed there is danger of having
a perminent plaque on this nerve as we have
on so many other nerves. If so then the
problem is not correctable any more.
" We can have blurring, loss of good color,
down to graying, or at worst just going blind."

Diplopia." This is caused from weaken muscles
that move the eye balls, but not at the
same speed. The eyes are not coordinated.
" You can wear a patch on one eye if the
problem is temporary. But for a more
perminent solution go to your optomist
and get fitted with lens that have prisms"

"The third problem is, Nystagnus or an
involuntary horzonal or vertical jerking
of the eyes. With this there may be dizzyness.
Prisms and drugs are your only answer for
this problem"
The quoted portions in this article, with
the quote marks are from an article by
Vicki Henson-Smith from the April 1998
issue of "real Living With MS"

Your medication can also have a lot of
impact on your vision. I found out recently
that because of over medication I was loosing
visual sharpness. I also had other problems
I'll not get into but when it was discovered
that I was being over medicated and the medication
was cut in half, much of the additional
problems disapeared. But the doctor didn't discover
it, I had to notice the difference myself and
then tell the doctor ,"I think I'm over medicated"
Most doctors pay attention fast when ever you say
that. If they don't they know their in law suit
territory. Revised 3-21-99RET
