| TheHealing Power of Prayer |
 |
| Ideas and quotes from Dr Dosset's book 5-19-98 |
| America's medical cost sky rocking |
With America's medical costs skyrocking
more each year, the use of prayer as a
partner in the medical team, costs could
be checked. There is much evidence that
prayer can help speed the healing process.
Also Americans are praying not to go near
a hospital in the first place.
Revision or new idea 4-17-2000---------
I have received quite a few e-mails from
people who have had positive results with
prayer and their MS.While none claim to be
cured, all have said prayer is the only way
they have been able to accept this disease.
I find personally that I get both extra
strength, physically and emotionally through
positive prayer.RET 4-17-2000
There are over 130 scientific studies on
the effect of prayer over the last 40 years.
Many medical workers have concluded that
prayer is as valid a healing tool as drugs
and surgery. prayer after surgery ,speeds
healing,regardless of wheather it was
appendectis or heart bypass.
Scientific reasearch over the last 40 years
when added up suggest strongly that asking
for devine help while at the hospital is a
good idea. One study shows that regular visits
by the chaplain will shorten the patient's
average stay by one or two days. At almost
$1000/day there could be a huge savings on
only one person.
Other studies suggest that praying for a
patient who does not know you are putting
in a good word for them , will help.
It is not known how this off site flow of
power or praying works. Dr. Dosset,M.D. in
his book "Healing Words" says that
although he has seenmany cases of this type
of intercession as related to the normal healing
process, studies are difficult to measure the
effect.
The wonders of God are not easy to study from
a scientific view point. never the less they
still try to measure them.
One study by the University of Va. showed that
orthopedic patients visited by a chaplain with
total time with the patient of 1 hour, not all
at one time, that these patients needed less
medical care. They got out of the hospital 1
or2 days sooner on the average than those
patients who did not receive spiritual support.
the same patients receiving spiritual support,
needed less pain medication, about 66% less.
At the VA hospital in Mass. the same health
blessings happened to coronary patients in
a study involving 700 patients. Not all were
heart by-passes.
One man in the recovery room after heart surgery
opened his eyes and saw a priest in a clerical
collar. The patient said, "Is it that Bad"?
The priest answered, " No you are through the
worst" prayer had already started, as did healing.
Recently I have seen the difference between
being conected to God in prayer and not connected.
With those that are connected it really does work.
With those that aren't connected,they don't realize
there is missed power. The difference is like
a person out of the 19 century, being allow to venture
into the 20th century and see all the changes.

| Gallup Polls on prayer |
Gallup polls conducted in the past 40 years,
found out that 90% of those surveyed believed
in some form of prayer. Despite scientific
studies over the years no formula or style of
prayer has been proven better than any other.
But we can not push prayer and expect the
results we desire every time. "God is not your
errand boy! He listens to your prayers."
Convential medical treatment and prayer should
work as a team.In fact most clergy are accepted
as being on the team. Why do you think that the
hospitals give them special parking places?
In some cases, as in the hospital in my town,
they have closer parking spaces than the
disabled.Their spaces are equal distant to that
of the doctors parking. They also eat in the
doctor's dineing room if they want to do so.
"When we pray in accordance with the law of love,
we pray in accordance with the will of God" says
Agnes Sanford. (A Christian Scientist)
says Agnes Sanford. (a Christian Scientist)
Convential medical treatments and prayer should
work as a team. In fact most clergy are accepted
as being on the healing team.in fact they get
parking spaces that are the same distances from
the hospital. I've checked it out.
When we request healing, obviously we are not
always going to be pleased with the results
all the time. People do die, regardless of the
quanities of religious zeal displayed.
The power of prayer has been used by other
religions other than Christian.Some with
more success. Dr Dossey mentions in his book
5 cases from KYUSHU University in Japan. One
man developed cancer of the upper jaw. The tumor
was resected in April, and his problems were not
over. The following year he develops hoarseness
and a dry feeling in his throat. Eventually a
new cancer was discovered on the left vocal cord.
the medical specialists recommended radical
surgery, the removal of his larynx, including
his vocal cords. |
| continued from area two Larynx removal recogmended |
But the patient DECLINED to have this radical
surgery. He stated that he preferred continuing
to be a preacher( Shimto Religion), for as long
ashe could speak rather than loose his voice.
"This is God's will and I have no complaint
about it" Whatever should happen will just
happen" Ten days later he went to see the
president of his religious organization. The
leader told him, "Remember that you are a
valuable asset for our church"This left Y.H.,
the patient exrteamly happy;he shed tears of
joy all the way home. Beginning with this
experience his hoarseness improved. Four
months later he began to give short speaches
at the church again. Two months after that he
could speak for up to 30 minutes and his voice
was clear. Y.H. lived for the next 13 years
without any form of medical treatment or surgery.
He died at the age of 78 from an unrelated cause.
The case has several notable features.Following
his diagnosis Y.H. showed no tendency to lapse
into depression,dispair,lock of motivation and
no fear of death.Which is typical of many
patients. He did not engage inspecific prayers
in which he pleated or bargained with God.
Y.H.'s case shows a paradoxical theme that runs
throught the other 4 cases reported by that
university in Japan. All of them had cancer in
some form. They all had often a prayerful,
prayer like attitude of devotion and acceptance
, notrubust aggressive prayer for a specific
outcome, including the eradication of the cancer.
There is evidence in the western world that
people who do not demand a healing are more
likely to receive it. Their unconscious minds
receive its power from intercessionary prayer
from outside themselves. Dr Dossey says that
these people pray more prayers of gratitude
and fewer requests for favors.
|
| Dr. Dossey's belief and doctor-patient therapy |
Dr Dossey begun his career as a doctor believing
that prayer was little more than superstition. As
his exposure to more unexplainable recoveries
were accumulating in his experiences, his mind
was changed. He is now the biggest salesman for
usinf prayer as one of the healing tools.
He states that one should pick ones physician
with care, because some may have negative thoughts
and go counter to your prayers. The best possible
situation is one in which both the parties
genuinely and honestly believe a therapy is going
to be effective. The power of the physician's
belief system to shape the patient's responses to
therapy is akin to prayer.
Prayer is really an invitation for God to
manifest action on your behalf. The Bible tells
us" He already has our needs at mind"
In Richard Foster's Book"Prayer: Finding theHeart's
Home" he relates that when the spirit has come to
reside in someone, that person can't stop praying
for the spirit prays without ceasing in him orher.
In First Tessalonians5:17 we read" pray Without
ceasing' or in Acts 6:4 we read "but we will give
ourselves continually to prayer"
There are over27 passages in the bible concerning
answers to prayer. My favorite passage isPsalms
139. It starts out, O Lord you have examined my
heart and you know everything about me."
This article has been given twice as a speach by
me to two separate groups. And I entend to do
it again . Richard Tanner |
