April 4 ,2008 new update on water consumption. I met a fellow MSer recently and he said to me you seem to be downing a lot of water .how do you hold it?
I don't as I'm very prone to incontinents but i wear good diapers and it never comes through I carry in my back pack on my wheelchair three more diapers.I would rather do it this way than hold back as water is so very essential to the proper working of our bodies .This is especially true of us using wheelchairs.RET 4/4/08
Sept.11,2000---- The importance of water for the MS affected person
is extreamly necessary. Many MS people when they get hospitalixed
don't realize they are dehydrated. There is a tendency to not drink
water because we all have such a bladder problem.Lack of water balance
can actually make your gait worse. We also see more UTI because water
is in suffient quanities to flush the bladder. If you need a bladder
bag to get the excess urine get one . If you need depends get them,I do
and use quite a few of them, but don't let the lack of water put you in the
hospital. I have had too many MS friends die from dehydration. The
doctors don't tell you about such things. Why I don't know. But we need it.
^ UPDATE;Aug.23 2000---- No I have no intention of deceiving any progressive
MS person into thinking we can eat our way to remission.I have been in this
SPMS long enough to know better.
But we still need the best of nutrition to ward off other diseases, like
cancer, and deteration of our bodies. We have to stay healthy and keep the
weight off.
My personal diet problem is keeping the same weight. It will just make
walking which many of us still do more difficult if we are carrying more
weight.Walking with crutches is not easy but I don't get out of wind and
fatigue will set in just the same.Walking in cool weather we last longer.
food is better assimulated and our organs will work better. I always also
recogmend swimming.

Started March 15,2000 ---- Maybe you can't cure MS via your diet, but you can
maximize your health and live better. Some say whom I have talked to you might
improve your MS health. I make no guarentees with this article .All I know
is that with my diet, betaseron and a few other helps I'm better , walking better,
and enjoying life more.
Can you eat your way to remission? Maybe so or not I can't say for sure.I can'
only report what has happen in me and a few other people whom I have communicated
with via the internet.
Much attention is given these days to anti Inflammation medications. The
treatment of MS is no exception.Actually not enough has been said about foods.
The NMSS has started doing some studies.Foods and suppliments can do more for those of
us who have a chronic illiness like MS.
You can energize yourself ,promote healing, while you advoid certain foods and
emphaise others. Some foods can produce more fatigue, while others can advoid fatigue.
Foods can play a vital role in improving your general health, while preventing a
relapse. It is important what you should advoid, and wht you should eat more of in your
diet.
Reduce your consumption of animal fats, and peanuts. Drink less alcohol. Alcohol
will obstruct our path to better general health. There is a craze now about drinking
red wine for the anti oxilants it contains. You can get the same effect by drinking
Concord grape juice without putting a burden on your liver. Any amount of alcohol
will make your liver work ten times harder than fruit juices.
Sugars which you intake in pastries, candy, soda pop,and icecream will also
interfere with your general health. They will raise your triglicerates, help to harden
your arteries permaturly . They will also give your mood swings greater downs and ups.
In women this is more true than in men. The same holds true for alcohol in women.
In women it will increase their premenstrual syndrome and chance of yeast infection.
This especially true when taken with too much coffee or colas.
Studies have shown that females are more likely to be affected by excesses in bad diets
than men.
Promoting good general health.
1.You can almost unlimited vegetables and fruits.
2. Take a suppliment daily . general vitamin and mineral suppliments sometimes contain
as many as 60 different substances. For MS people you should have a capsule of one
of the oils, such as flax seed oil, olive oilfish oil,or evening Primrose oil. while
these oils will not cure, they provide the necessary non artery cloging oil to assist
your body should it decide to start remyelization. Personally I enjoy olive oil and
eating olives. That is one of the great things about Italian foods.
3.Eat more cold water fish such as salmon, tuna, and Halibut. They have the right oils.
4. Eat soy products and skinless chicken and turkey.
5. Drink more water.
Veggies and fruits are all rich in powerful antioxidants which help to prevent a
lot of things, like colon cancer, harding of the arteries, and for the MS affected
person inflammation. It's a lot better than steroids for you too. They could cut your
chances of a relapse.
The rich color of your fruit and veggies are your clue to the contents of
antioxidants. Every meal should have something of color. Even cooked veggies and fruits
don't loose the antioxidants, it is still there in katchep.
Getting back to the cold water fish such as salmon which I could eat every day
and do so on the cruises I have taken, will help prevent inflammation in tissues And
they will assist redevelopment of new myelin.
A good vitamin capsule bottle should have the USP or U.S. pharmiacopial seal of
approval . Those with out it will not dissolve nd you will just loose them through the
digestive track.Good vitamines also contain no sugar, salt or food colorings.
Some vitamins and suppliment capsules will have up to 60 different ingredients.
A brand name or store brand doesn't guarentee quality. Many health food stores have
their houde brands which may be good. The organic or natural are best.
Men and women over 50 should advoid daily vitamin capsules which have iron in them
This iron we usually have suffent amounts stored any way. In too great a quanities
it will allow the cholestrole to become oxalated and stick to the walls of the
arteries.I think I mentioned that there are traveling teams that want to examine
your arteries in the neck and legs to see if harding has taken place. They do this by
ultra sound and it is quick.I took the full battery of tests recently for $95, which
the insurance company was glad to pay 80% when I sent in the bill.
All these tests are up to yopu but I did them at age 65 and I feel great.
