New Discoveries in the fight Against MS
Why study Genes? Because they control who we are.

Did you know certain chemicals can actually change your DNA?
May 5,2008 Revision; Our genes and our DNA got both of us to where we are now.I know we both have MS and I have PPMS but life still goes on and probably a long time.
there is nothing we can do about it now. But our DNA body plans also make us maybe something we like Like being an artistic bend to design or painting.
Maybe you have musical ability. These things have to be connected to genes.
They are the great things .An Artist either musical or painter survives sometimes
on nobody recognizing his or her talents for years but even in the worst situations
these talents do come out.

If MS isnot an inherited disease, then why
do medical scientists look for clues in
the genes of MS people?
But MS seems to run in families.I know several
individuals where Mom has had daughter with MS /
We know MS involves the immune system
attacking the myelin in the central nervous
system. But the infamous T-cells remain at
their intended work inthe non MS person. also
they don't attack all of the MS people with
the same viciousness. Nor do they attack the
same person each time with the same results.
When the white cells that are sensitive
to myelin are stimulated, they leave the
blood stream and move accross the protective
blood barrier in the brain of the mS person,
but not that of the non mS person. Thus the
move of t-cell which are specilized white
cells that are designed to attack only foreign
invaders in the body, flow across the
blood barrior into the brain an start an
inflammation. Then this further stimulates
It is in the search for genes responsible

the immune system.
Dr. Cedrie Raine from Albert Einstein college of medicine findings
He has discovered that the myelin on the
nerves develop bubbles and form a chemical
called cytokine. Remember this is only on
the MS person. Then this chemical is
releasted. It is after that that the damage
is done.
Usually the damage can't be erased at least usually
not at this point in time
There is a rule of thumb that says if a change in
your mS condition or disability lasts over 2 years
there is a 90% chance it will last the rest of your life.
Usually secondary progressive multiple sclerosis
and primary progressive MS patients just don'tget rid
of damage.
Revised May 23,2006 RET
Statitics on MS chances
the stititics say that an individual has
1 in a thousand chances of geting MS , this
is out of the general population. But in
a family that already has MS the chances drop
greatly of other inthat family getting MS .
I had three in my own family all on my
mother's side. Some of these people in families
will never get dignosed. Their cases will be
too mild and not come around very often to
bother them. It may just get passed off as
being clumbsy. I had a cousin that was like that
for most of her life up to the age of about 28
then it set in to a most noticeable degree.
Getting back to genes, It is known that
20% of the known MS people have a relative
also with mS either very mild or severe or
some place in
between.
There are hints that the genes associated
with mS susceptibility are not abnormal.
THey may be to our advantage. Most of us
MSer have rather good records of fending off
sickness. I accumulated 340 sick days when I
was teaching before I retired. Even after I
discovered that I had mS and still taught
for 5 more years, even though it really showed
on my gait, and frequently used crutches in
school to get about some days.
Butsome of these genes predispose the
individual to MS.
if the bad act-up genes can be studied
and identified, then maybe a vacine to counter
the t-cells will be developed. the betaseron
and avonex try to do this control of the
immunesystem. but as we know these drugs do
not score anywhere near 100% success.
There is definately more that one factor
that triggers mS to start. Some say it is a
virus, otherssay it is the wrong nutrition,
and still others say it is trama of a sudden
nature or stress. my personal feeling is that
it is probably at least two in combination.
i'll have more to say about this on a future
up date to this page.
