Bladder Dysfunction
May 8,2003 Never wash a cathiter as it can make for infection if you did
it poorly, and many have done so.I have enough trouble that even when in the house I some
times don't make it to one of our two baths.

If you are like 80% of all MS people ,we

all have bladder problems. For the older

males we usually have a prostrate problem.

I have learned this statistic when I became

diagnosed with MS in Sept. 1997.I have had MS
since 1980 but had very little bladder problems
until 1997.Then it started a slow drip and by
the new date when I revised this page It now
can just gush at times.I never go anywhere
Unprotected.
I suspected

that I had the disease for three years and

went around and around with my former

neurologist until I was able to obtain a second

opinion.

Conventional therapies have not been sucessful

for me but may be for others. Medications are

available to assist with decreasing bladder

spacity such as Bentyl,LevBid, and Ditropan.

Some patients may benefit from self-

catherization along with medication. For

those who are unable to find symptom

management, surgery can be an option.

Bladder augmentation has been done many

years. The success rate is about 60%.

The procedure consists of removing a

small piece of intestine and placing this

within the bladder walll in order to enlarge

the bladder and to decrease the spacticity

I must say that I'm not quite convinced at

point, as my own surgery has not yet occurred.

Perhaps once I recover from the surgery, I

can contribute more about this proceedure.

For males there are several ways of handling this problem
Many times I just wear a Depend or other similar
product.I have lately discovered the adult pullup I like.
It catches all that leaks out. In my own case
it comes in gushes and in a quick count after I get the
feeling something is going to happen. I have about
2 seconds warning.
Another method for males is the "condum style rubber
cup which fits over the penus. There is a tube from the
end of this device to a leg bag which has to be emptyed soon
but on airlines it will save you a few trips to the restroom.
Especially if you are a wheelchair user. Trips to the
restroom aren't always possible as your chair will not
go up and down the narrow aisle. You who use the wheelchairs
all the time know such.
The bag is easily seen if you are going to wear shorts
Which I do very frequently. So it's back to the Depends.
Try to find a cheap place to buy them. When I first started
using them I was so embarrased buying them I would go to
a pharmacy which didn't know me. Now I don't care.RET
Loss of control of bowels -Jan2000
My control of bowels had never been a problem until without warning
It happened on a cruise.I woke up in this soupy mess.It takes a bigger
diper to protect against this sort of thing.I had to get help immediately
While I haven't lost total control as I have with the bladder, the events
are all too frequent.I don't dare go to bed unprotected. This is much more embarrising
that loss of bladder. But what what I have been able to learn from other MS affected
persons this can happen in the earlier stages of the disease.I was talking to a woman
who hadn't even started using a cane all the time had several times been subjected
to this problem.
To me it's just another sign of the advancement of the disease. You have
no control over MS's developments So don't go blaming yourself.Just make adjustments
accordingly.Since the time I first had a problem in Jan.2000 It has happen only 4 times
but you never when that will be.Lately I find I get the urge when I'm awake
I had better get to the jon soon.I recently was talking on the phone when I got
the feeling ,"you don't have too many seconds to get there" I had to sign of the phone
in a hurry with a a story of "someone just rang my door bill I'll call you back"
Naturally I'm not going to broadcast the fact I have bowel problems. But I will admit
it to a fellow MSer. RET
