Ko Bu Jutsu: Weapons

The term Ko means before and generally refers to older martial arts, whilst the term Bu means Martial and refers to military or war, Jutsu means art, whilst Do means way. In Nihon Go Shin Kage Ryu and Hakuda Ryu Kempo Jutsu there are a variety of different weapons. The wapons of Nihon Go Shin Kage Ryu are separate from those of Hakuda Ryu Kempo Jutsu and as such are taught separately though there is some very limited cross over betwen the two arts. It should however be noted that whilst weapons are part of these arts we do not grade individuals in any individual weapon or in weapons arts known as Kobudo or Kobujutsu.

Categories of NGSKR Weapons

In Nihon Go Shin Kage Ryu the weapons can be easily divided into two categories:
Bladed Weapons:
Ken (Sword); a Bokken (wooden sword) is used for practise.
Shoto: A wooden short sword about same length as Wakizashi
Tanto: Dagger/Knife. This may be wooden or rubber.
Stick Weapons:
Jo: Four foot staff
So-Jo: Short Spear of four feet in length. A Jo is used for this.
Tanjo/Hanbo: Three foot stick/staff.

Ken Jutsu: Art of Sword
|

In Nihon Go Shin Kage Ryu the first weapon that is taught is the sword and this is taught in Do form, in other words apart from posture and some basic exercises the sword is not taught as a battlefield weapon,
Initially a student will be taught correct etiquette such as how to carry and hold a sword, correct bowing, three basic postures and basic cutting techniques. At the next level basic methods of drawing (Nuki Tsuki) and cleaving cut (Kiri Oroshi) from a kneeling (Seiza) to a standing (Tachi) position taken from the beginning of two kata's are taught along with one quick draw method (Batto) form (Kata) are taught along with two further postures.
At the same time that the Nuki Tsuki (Drawing cut) and Kiri Oroshi (Cleaving cut) are introduced to the student they will also learn to use the So-Jo.

So Jo Jutsu: Art of Short Staff & Short Spear
|
|
|
|
|
The So-Jo is a short spear which is the same length as a Jo, What is taught consists of basic exercises and thrusting techniques which are similar to Kassen Te in Motobu Udun Ti, thus what is taught with a thrusting technique using the end of the weapon to srike is the same as what was introduced as a striking technique known as Nukite from a guard position. We also cover stepping, deflecting a weapon and changing the hand grip and one kata and its application.
