You start out the game by setting the game's internal clock. After that Oak will explain the world of Pokémon again and then you will get to choose your name.

Finally you'll start out in your room, head downstairs to have a talk with your mom. She'll ask what day it is and then give you your Pokégear.

Like Red, Blue, and Yellow, head next door to meet the local Professor. His name is Professor Utsugi and after a talk will let you choose one of three starting Pokémon: Chikorita the grass Pokémon, Hinoarashi the fire Pokémon, or Waninoko the water Pokémon.

After choosing your starter Pokémon Utsugi will tell you that the machine in the corner heals Pokémon.

Next head outside and start exploring.

Next you'll want to try to find Professor Oak. You'll pass through a city called Yoshino City to get to him.
When you first enter the city talk to the old man below you. He will show you the town and then give you a Map card for your PokéGear when you go into his house and talk to him again.

You'll eventually find him since one of the paths is blocked by two battling trainers. Oak will introduce himself and then give you a high-tech version of the Pokédex.

You'll rest for the night, and in the morning Utsugi calls you and tells you to come back to Wakaba Town, something has happened.

Your Rival
Someone has stolen one of Utsugi's Pokémon, and just your luck it's the one that has the advantage over yours. Well, it looks like you just found your new rival. Rival

Wakaba Town
Head back and talk with Professor Utsugi to see what was going on. You'll then name your Rival.
On your way out of the Lab, the Scientist at the bottom will give you 5 Pokéballs.

When you exit the city a man will want to show you how to use your new Pokéballs to catch Pokémon.

After battling and capturing some of the new and old Pokémon you'll be ready to take on the local gym leader, Hayato. He uses bird Pokémon and is not difficult to defeat.
Once you beat Hayato he will give you the Wing Badge. It will allow you to use Flash anytime.

"Bellsprout Tower"

This Monk gives you HM05 In Kikyou City head north to find the Bellsprout Tower. You'll encounter Monks with Bellsprouts and the occasional Ho-Ho. At the top your Rival beats up a monk and runs off after talking to you. Defeat the Monk and he will give you HM05, Flash.

Togepi - Kikyou City PokéCenter
After defeating Hayato, a Scientist will show up in the Kikyou City PokéCenter. Talk to him and he will give you an Egg (you must have one slot open for it in your Pokémon lineup.)
The Egg will hatch after you walk so many steps and turn into Togepi. There is a man blocking the most southern exit of this town and if you don't get Togepi you can't get through.

There's also a house in Kickyou that you can trade a Bellsprout for an Onix. The level will depend on what level your Bellsprout is because whenever you trade a Pokemon to a person in the game, their Pokemon will be the same level as yours.

He won't let you pass if you don't have Togepi

there are certain puzzules you need to solve in the game.

Tsukushi uses 3 Bug Pokémon. So if you chose Hinoarashi as your starter Pokémon you will really have the advantage, especially against Scyther.

After you leave the previous city you'll enter a forest. You'll see a man standing near a cut-able bush.

After him you will see a bird Pokémon by itself. Chase it around until it reaches the man by the cut-able bush. Talk to the new man and he will give you Cut.

Now Cut that cut-able bush to get on to the next town. A new feature in Gold/Silver is that you can just go up to the bush, press A, and it will get cut down if you have a Pokémon with Cut in your lineup. The same goes for Boulders, and that Tree that will come up later.

TM02
Inside the Ubame Forest Maze is a guy who will give you TM02. TM02 lets you shake the little trees that are everywhere in the game.

I found an Exeggcute and #190 Eipamu, that little monkey with a hand-like appendage on the end of its tail. Beedrill was also found in Silver, Butterfree in Gold.

Kogane City is pretty big. The local PokéMart is like the Celadon Department Store. There's plenty to due, but let's get down to business. It's the Gym Leader's badge you want, isn't it?
All the trainers use Normal Pokémon in the Kogane City Gym. Right before Akane there is a trainer who likes to use Jigglypuff, 3 to be exact. So you might want to stop at the PokéCenter to wake up any Pokémon before taking on Akane.

Akane won't give you the Regular badge at first. Talk to her again after you talk with the trainer below her.

Radio
In the radio station at Kogane, there is someone at the far end of the counter. She has a five question quiz for you. Answer yes, yes, yes, no, yes, no. In other words, the higher answer, higher answer, higher answer, lower answer, etc... You'll get a Radio for your PokéGear.

The Game Corner in Kogane City requires the coin case like in the previous versions. In Kogane are two buildings that have an underground tunnel that connect to each other. There are a few trainers there, but, if you find a PokéBall down there, it'll contain the coin case. Now you can take your case and go gambling.
Also, there's a bike shop in Kogane, just talk to the guy and he'll give you a free bike.

If you talk to the guy inside the next watch station that looks like a Safari Zone warden, you'll get to do something like the Safari Zone but you can only encounter Bug Pokémon.

Some other differences:

You get to catch 1 Pokémon.

Press start and the round is over.

It's free.

You get 20 silver Pokéballs.

There are no Rocks, or Bait, but you can battle with the Pokémon in your first slot.

This Bug Catcher's Tournament is only held on Tuesday (Kayoobi), Thursday (Mokuyoobi), and Saturday (Doyoobi).

Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Venonat, Pinsir, and Scyther are the Pokémon that I've seen in there. What's weird is that you can find level 17 Caterpies and Weedles.

After the third Gym there was a house right outside the gym. Inside the girl in red will give you Squirtle Water to sprinkle on the tree to wake it up and fight you. Remember there's only one, so be ready to catch it.

Next head directly to the right and talk to the fat guy that you come in contact with. He'll give you TM08 which is called Rock Breaker. This move will allow you to break certain rocks later in the game so don't lose it.

After Usokki you will reach Enjyu City. After stopping by the local PokéCenter to heal your Pokémon you have can take on the local gym leader, Matsuba.

It would have been handy to have a Kadabra by now.

Enjyu City Gym - Badge 4
There is a ghost floor surface which continually has you falling through, but to get to the other side, you must walk directly forward in front of a gym trainer, then walk directly left/right, but before reaching the edge, walk directly up in front of another trainer.

The Gym Leader uses all Ghost Pokémon so a Psychic like Kadabra or Drowzee will come in handy here.

Matsuba will give you the Phantom Badge for winning. All Pokémon up to level 50 will obey you now.

Surf
Two more things to do here. Inside the town there is a man with five daughters. Each daughter has an Eevee evolution (two new ones, a Psychic one, and a Dark one). If you defeat all five and talk to the man with the hat, he will give you HM03, Surf.

The House

HM03 - Surf

The Tower Once you enter the Tower your Rival will fight you. If you have that Kadabra, now is the time to use it.

Once your Rival is defeated and leaves, it's time to explore the rest of the tower. It's forever dark in my game now, so I fought some Rattata, the occasional Gastly, Koffing, and Magmar!

If you taught TM08 to one of your Pokemon, now it is time to use it. (Remember TM08 is given to you by the fat man that was looking at Usocky - the wiggling tree.)

Fight the trainer and you can fall down the whole in the middle. Go up to the stone statues and they will awaken, then scatter. These are the Three Legendary dogs, Raikou (electric type), Entei (fire type), and Suikun (water type). You may run into them later on in the game (in the wild), so be prepared.

Next head west battling some more trainers and finding new Pokémon like Buru (Snubble). Then go south to Asagi City.

TM08 Breaks Rocks

If you check out the local Gym your Rival will tell you that the gym is empty.

HM04 - Strength
Head to the house next to the PokéCenter. Talk to the guys inside and you'll get HM04.

Mikan needs Medicine

The Tower Next head to the Tower that is southeast in the town. Scale to the top battling trainers and you'll find Mikan. She'll ask that you get some medicine for her sick Pokémon.

You'll get that later, but first, time to surf to Taban City.

This whole will get you to the top

Heal your Pokémon at the local Center then head off to fight the Gym Leader. To get passed the stones blocking your way, you must press the stones on the ends up using Strength. Then Press the middle stone to the left.
Again, Kadabra comes in handy.

Shijima will give you the Shock Badge for winning. Now Pokémon up to level 70 will obey you.

HM02 - Fly

Now surf back to Asagi City.

#213 Tsubotsubo
There's a guy that will give you a Tsubotsubo on Taban if you only bring 5 Pokémon with you.
You can also catch wild Tsubotsubo by breaking the rocks on Taban. By breaking the rocks there's always a chance a wild Pokémon will fight you, and in that chance Tsubotsubo might attack.

Medicine
Stop by this house to get the medicine Mikan needs for her sick Pokémon.

After receiving the medicine from the guy in sunglasses on Taban, go back to Mikan at the top of the tower, give her the medicine, and she will go back to her gym.

Asagi City Gym - Badge 6
Mikan's two Magnemites shouldn't give you that much trouble, especially if you grabbed a Geodude earlier in the game.

The new steel type Pokémon, Haganail, is five levels higher, but you should still be able to take it out.

Once you beat Mikan, the Steel Badge is yours.

Next head back to Enjyu City, the one with the Ghost gym leader. Then exit east from the city using the Route Gate and you'll come across Mt. Suribachi on Route 42.

Deep inside Mt. Suribachi is a trainer that will give you Baruki if you beat him. Make sure you only bring 5 Pokémon with you or he will not give it to you.

You can easily get passed the mountain if you have trouble by surfing in the water outside the Mountain.

The Choju Town Gym is being blocked by a Team Rocket member so you'll have to find something else to do first.
Head north battling trainers and new Pokémon until you reach a lake with a Gold Gyarados in it. Surf out to the middle and fight it. There's only one, so you better catch it!

Level 30 Gyarados

Lance

Hey, it's Lance! After catching the Golden Gyarados you'll see Lance standing by a sign. Talk to him and he will tell you he needs help, Choju Town has a secret Rocket base that needs to be demolished. So answer yes to his question, he'll fly off, then go back to Choju Town.
Answer Yes

Choju Town "Store"

The "Store" If you head to the middle of the town where a guy is selling things, you'll find Lance inside. He'll show you the secret door to Team Rocket's hideout.
Make sure your Pokémon are strong, a lot of Team Rocket members will go at you in here.

Down Here!

Team Rocket Hideout - Level 1

This map looks peacful, right? WRONG. Every so often two Team Rocket members will come and fight you. But don't worry, all they have is either Zubat, Grimer, and Rattata, or a Drowzee and a Zubat.
Remember to talk with everyone on this level, even if they don't face you. And look on the computer.

Team Rocket Hideout - Level 2

Lance will talk to you when you get to level 2. Make sure you talk with everyone on the level even after you beat someone in a battle.

Team Rocket Hideout - Level 3

You need to talk with everyone on this level as well, and look on all of the computers. After opening up the door with the bird inside, defeat the trainer and then talk with the bird.
Then head back to the 2nd level, and open up the door. Fight some more, then fight the Electrodes.

Lance will thank you and give you HM06, whirlpool. What this does is destroys whirlpools so you can get passed (mostly to get to Lugia)

Choju Town Gym - Badge 7
Yanagi uses Ice Pokémon. If you picked up a Magmar from earlier, he'd be useful right around now.
After beating Yanagi, you'll get the Ice Badge.

Before heading on, you'll have to backtrack. Professor Utsugi calls you to tell you Kogane City has been taken over by Team Rocket.

Head back to Kogane City for more Rocket fun.

The other floors of the Radio Tower that were not accessible before, now are. Unfortunately these floors are reeking of Rocket.
The first part of this chore is easy enough. Just fight all the Rocket's and make it up to the top. You'll see a locked door on the third floor, but this will be opened later.

Beat the main Rocket leader at the top of the Tower. He'll give you a key that will unlock that strange blue door that was locked in the underground passage of Kogane.

Next you will have to press switches to open doors and remove walls. To get to the Female Rocket leader you must push the switches in this order: the Left switch, then Middle, then the Right one.
After you beat her you'll find 3 guys stuck on the bottom floor of the Kogane Department Store. Talk to them all and one will give you a card key to unlock that door that I said we'd unlock later.

Go unlock the door and beat the rest of the Rockets including the male and female Team Rocket leaders.

Next head back to Choju Town and enter the Ice Cave.

Eevee

Free Eevee inside Don't forget to stop by this house in Kogane City to get your own complimentary Eevee. Have a slot open for it though or you won't be able to get it.
You could also buy an Eevee at Game Corner (for 6,666 coins).

Bill gives you Eevee!

The Ice Cave shouldn't be too hard to get through. There is only one real tricky part, but PikachuPikablu made this map to help you get through it.
You'll find some new Pokémon in here, a small mammoth like thing called Urimuu. There's also a shy bird called Deribaato.

Follow the Red Arrow Road

HM07 - Waterfall
You can find the last HM, HM07 in the Ice Cave. This HM lets you ride up waterfalls.
HM07

There is a guy in Fusube City that will erase TM's or HM's from your Pokémon. Just talk to him and he will ask which move you want deleted.
This is very useful since the HM's in this game are used more regularly. So having all the required Pokémon at the same time with these moves and having your normal fighting Pokémon is hard to do. So eventually you'll give in and teach one of your good Pokémon an HM. But don't worry you can delete it later!

(Krabby can learn Cut, Surf, Strength, and Rock Breaker, though)

My Kadabra had to learn Flash

Fusube City Gym - Badge 8
Note: If you can't get into this gym because of a guy blocking it, you have forgotten to beat something earlier in the game, most likely you have not been following this Walkthru and came straight to this page. In that case, click the back button a few times down there at the bottom of the page to see what you missed.

Before battling Ibuki there will be a small puzzle where you have to push 3 Rocks into holes to make paths over the molten lava below. Not to mention trainers to fight.

But eventually you'll make it to Ibuki. Her Dragon Pokémon can be taken out with Electric attacks, like Denryuu's Thunder Punch. Kingudora looks like it evolves from Seadra, but
