Gundam Wing begins in the era of A.C. (After Colony - after the creation of space colonies inhabited by humans). War is constant on Earth, while the space colonies live in relative peace. The wars on earth finally ended in or about 175 A.C. At this point, the Earth government established the "Earth Sphere Unified Alliance". This organization was to promote peace on Earth and throughout the space colonies. Unknown to the general public, the Alliance was only a puppet for the industrialist group, The Romefeller Foundation.

In the name of peace, the Alliance's Army, known as "OZ", seized control of all space colonies and crushed all oppositions with mech-like fighting machines known as Mobile Suits (MS). After two decades of oppression, a group of rebels amongst the space colonies decided to show that they will not tolerate the iron grip of the Earth Alliance any further. With the help of the 5 scientists who first developed the MS, the rebels created five super fighting MS machines, known as Gundams. However, no ordinary pilots can control these machines due to their advanced technology. Therefore, 5 children were adopted and trained from a very young age with each having very distinct personalities.

Their mission, destroy the Earth Alliance.

In the year AC (After Colony) 195, large populations live in clusters of giant, wheel-shaped space colonies at the five Lagrange points, areas of relative stability in Earth orbit. Once seen as a safe refuge from decades of war on Earth, the colonies now are oppressively ruled by the United Earth Sphere Alliance world government and its elite military corps, the Specials, using humanoid fighting machines called mobile suits to crush all opposition. But the Specials are nothing but a front for OZ, a secret society with its own goals.

After two decades of oppression, the desperate colonists forge a new plan‹Operation Meteor. The scientists who helped create the first mobile suits pitch in to construct "Gundams," dispatching them to Earth with their young, highly trained pilots to wage guerilla war against the Alliance. The five pilots - Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Wu Fei - each hail from a different space colony, and pilots his own custom Gundam. Although all five were chosen to be a part of Operation Meteor to help liberate the space colonies, they do not know each other, or the others¹ mission goals. Heero is a serious, all-business teen commando; Duo a wisecracking, good-natured type; Trowa, silent and mysterious; Quatre, sensitive and independently wealthy, supported by his own private army (!); and Wu Fei is agressive and even a little overly honorable. All five share one trait - they're deadly fighters, and their first committment is to the mission - until circumstances force them to assess their role in the fight, and ask themselves if they are helping the colonies' cause, or causing more harm than good.
