Ok first off you will need styrofoam the amount depends on what type and how big your making you diorama. For the diorama I just started building I went to my local hardware store and got a 4ftx8ft sheet of styrofoam to make the flat land to mine for the hills and stuff like that I went to wal-mart and pick up some sheets about 2ftx2ft and about 4in thick. Ok you will also need plaster cloth or lightweight hydrocal it is a type of plaste but lighter than just straight plaster you can pick the hydrocal and plaster cloth at your local hobby shop or model train shop. Now when you have these things you will need some stuff called fine turf made by Woodland Scenics you can pick up different types depending on what type of diorama your building I used weeds, grass, earth, burnt grass, and weat for a feild effect also you will want to add trees on the size and depending on how many trees you want and what kind is up to you I used dead tree stumps, half way dead trees, and some living trees for mine but like I said its up to you also for making roads and paths you should use a modeling sand for paths and road ballast for the roads like rock roads. you will also need white glue and a low temp glue gun, hobby knife, and hobby saw.
.Ok first off you will want to think out a design of what kind and size diorama you want to build. when you have that done and out of the way if your going to build a big diorama like a 4x8 table one that is going to stay in one spot the you will need a 4x8 sheet of styrofoam and assortment of small and big peices for hills and stuff.
.When you have gotten your lay out if its a hill or something like that you will want to use your hobby saw or a foam cutter you can pick them up at any hobby shop and cut it the way you want it to look like when this is done the hill should be covered wil lightweight hydrocal and you want it to look like tooth paste not to thick not to thin if you follow the directions on the bottel you will make it to about looking like pancake batter and thats not good it wont stick to the foam.
.One you have covered your hill with hrydcal you will want to take and paint the sides of the hill an eart color light brown works great.
.Ok now you will want to deside on a grass and earth blend or just graas or just earth I mostly use a blend to give it more of a old look. when you get rerady to put down your turf you will want to put on a few lines of white gule and take your finger and spred it out on the diorama if you miss spots with glue go back over them make sure not to let the glue dry.
.Now you have your glue down and ready for turf you will want to take the top off your truf bottel and get a spoon and lightly dust the surface with it if any white spots show just take and put a little mor down until their is no more white spots.
.Once the glue has dried you will want to take your hill out side and take clear sealer like you put on models and stay far bacj from your hill if you get too close you will knock the grass off of your hill you will want to get back to where its looks like it is raining on the hill and you will need to put alot on a few coats you will want each coat to make the grass and stuff on your hill to look like it is really wet. When you have put done you few coats you will want to set it aside for a day to let the clear coat dry good.
.Once you have let it set for a day it is time to take and put your trees and rocks stuff like that you will want to glue your trees down once the glue is dried on the trees you will want to take and place your model or what ever your building the diorama for and your done |
