Addition |
Hi, below there is an explanation of long Subtraction. If you
see any errors please contact me at JAdaveyo6@aol.com.
Okay let's pretend that the problem is 85-55. Subtraction is the opposite
of Addition. So if I were to add these two numbers I would get 140, but
Addition is a different story. Well first if my problem was 85-55 I would
take the numbers in the one column. So I would subtract 5-5 which is 0.
So that means that our answer ends in a 0. Then I would do 8-5 which is
3. The three reprisents the 10s column. Then I'd put the 3 and the 0 together
which equals 30. So 85-55=30. You can check Subtraction through Addition.
They are called inverse operations. So 30+55=85. That is how I would check
my subtraction problems. If you figure out a way that is different please contact
me at JAdaveyo6@aol.com. |
Okay this is how to do Addition:
Okay your problem is: 45+68=?. This is how you would handle it:
First you would add the ONES COLUMN. 5+8=? Well if you know
short Addition you know that 5+8=13. But now you know that we can't
put two digits in the same column. So we'd put the 3 in the ones column.
Then we'd carry the one on top of the 4. So now we'd add 4+6+ONE.
We add the one because it over lapped and would go in the 10s column.
And 4+6+1=11. So now that we have no more to carry and no more columns
our answer would be 113. A way to check this is to do 113-68 and it should equal
45. But that's Subtraction and is a different story. So if you have any questions
please E-mail me at JAdaveyo6@aol.com. |
| Multiplication |
Okay, below is an explanation for Multiplication.
Okay, first you have to know your basic facts for Multiplication. You have to know your 2s-12s. I'm not going to explain that now so this is an explanation of LONG MULTIPLICATION. Okay, now let's pretend that our problem is 64x46=??? We don't know the answer, but it's easy to get WITHOUGH A CALCULATOR, but first you need to know your basic facts. First we would to this: 4x6=? Well if you know your basic facts you'd know that 4x6=24. So we did the ones column. But we can't put two digits in the one column. So, so far our answer would be, 4, because we'd keep the four from 24 an dcarry the 2 to the tens column. So now we have to do 6x4, so above it shows 4x6=24, and they're the same numbers so 6x4=24. That means that now, we have 24 again. This is what we would do: we would take our answer (to 6x4=24) and put the 24 beside the 4. But no that's incorrect, remember when we put the '2' from 4x6=24 on top of the 64? Well then we add the 2 to teh 24. So then we put the 26 (24+2=26) with the other 4. So our answer is: 264. Do you understand? If you do not understand E-mail me at JAdaveyo6@aol.com... If you see any errors then E-mail me at JAdaveyo6@aol.com... Oh, and I just taught you the short way. I won't have the long way up yet. |
