Cowboys acquire Galloway from Seahawks for two 1st Rounders:
RVING, Texas (Ticker) -- The Dallas Cowboys could not pass on the chance of pairing burner Joey Galloway with Rocket Ismail, even at the expense of two first-round picks.
The Cowboys today acquired Galloway, who was designated as a franchise player by the Seattle Seahawks, for first-round picks in 2000 and 2001.
After the trade, the Cowboys signed Galloway to a seven-year contract worth $42 million, including a signing bonus of $12.5 million.
"The minute the bell hit for free agency (12:01 am EST on Friday) I was on the phone with (Seahawks coach-general manager) Mike Holmgren," said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones at a news conference today at Valley Ranch. "We knew we had to take some risk. He offered and I accepted."
Ironically, Galloway fired his former agent Eric Metz and hired Leigh Steinberg, who also happens to represent Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. Steinberg admitted today that Aikman pushed hard for the signing of Galloway.
"It's difficult to negotiate when you have Troy there yelling, 'get it done, get it done,'" Steinberg said at today's news conference.
Aikman has two of the league's fastest receivers at his disposal with Galloway, who was timed at sub-4.3 in the 40 and won the Fastest Man competition last year, and Ismail.
"We felt if we could complement Rocket with Joey we can do dynamic things with the offense," Jones said. "We rated Joey as the top free agent prospect in a very rich free agent pool."
Dallas' offense struggled last season after top receiver Michael Irvin suffered a career-threatening spinal injury in Week Five. He is expected to retire due to a condition known as cervical stenosis, a narrow spinal column.
Without Irvin and an injured Ernie Mills, the Cowboys were forced to use youngsters Jeff Ogden, Jason Tucker and Chris Brazzell opposite Ismail.
After Galloway, 28, missed half of the 1999 season due to a bitter contract dispute, his days in Seattle appeared numbered. The Seahawks designated Galloway as a franchise player with the intention of trading him after an arbitrator officially declared him an unrestricted free agent. Holmgren set the price at two first-rounders, which is the automatic compensation for a franchise player, and did not wait long to swing a deal with Dallas.
"I didn't have a lot of control, but once the name Dallas Cowboys came up, I was excited," Galloway said.
Dallas' first-round pick in the April draft is the 19th overall selection. The Cowboys earned a wild card berth with an 8-8 record.
An arbitrator ruled Thursday that Galloway fulfilled his contractual obligation to the club, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Seahawks had argued that Galloway had a year remaining on his original five-year contract since he did not accrue a full season due to his holdout. However, the Players Association won its argument that Galloway should be credited with a full season because he played in at least six games.
Galloway finally reported to the team on November 8. He needed to rejoin the Seahawks by November 14 in order to get credit for his fifth NFL season.
A first-round pick of Seattle in 1995, Galloway caught 261 passes for 4,122 yards and 36 touchdowns in his first four seasons with the Seahawks and excelled as a punt returner.
After his bitter holdout last year, Galloway played in eight games and had 22 receptions for 335 yards and a touchdown.
