The Story So Far
As for many family historians our research has been far from simple.

Through personal family knowledge and some basic searching at the Public Records Office we were able to rapidly trace our line back to Thomas Jupp and his marriage to Ann Lewis in 1842. The certificate for that marriage gave us a few extra details. It told us that Thomas's father was named George and deceased by 1842, that Thomas was a builder of full age and that this was not Thomas' first marriage since he was listed as a widower. We were soon able to locate Thomas and Ann on several census returns giving us a year of birth for Thomas (1812+/- 1). This should also have given us a place of birth but unfortunately Thomas gave us a choice in either Brighton or Preston. There we became becalmed as we were unable to match our ancestor with any birth for a Thomas listed in Brighton or in the Preston area of Brighton. We would now like to suggest that the descendant chart shown below places our Thomas in his family setting and helps explain why we struggled for so long to match up the different strands. Although it would be misleading to say we have proved the connection all the evidence seems very persuasive. If anyone can suggest an alternative then we would love to hear from them.

So why do we think our Thomas could be the Thomas born to George and Naomi (nee Furlonger) of East Preston?

(1) If this isn't the correct Thomas then who is? For quite a while now I have been collecting details on all the Thomas Jupps that have appeared under various sources (Census returns, birth, marriage and death records, archive collections etc) and it is striking how few alternative candidates there are. If this is not to be our true connection then it seems our true ancestor has remained hidden from the records.

(2) There is an obvious similarity between the names Preston (now days a district of Brighton) and East Preston. One could see how the two places could seem similar even though they are distinct places. Perhaps knowing that Thomas later lived in Brighton has prejudiced us to look at the Preston in Brighton as more likely when all along we should have been looking at East Preston in West Sussex.

Both are good if simple explanations but can we join the two Thomas together? Well perhaps we can.

In searching for clues we obtained the marriage certificates for 2 Thomas Jupp's from the Sussex area. Firstly there is the marriage of a Thomas Jupp born (approx 1811) at Climping to a Maria MILLYARD (July 1837). His address was given as Brighton although Climping is in West Sussex and not a million miles from East Preston. His age fits, as does his occupation as bricklayer. Definitely a possible. Secondly there was the marriage of a Thomas Jupp of full age to a Harriet CLARKE in May 1841 in Brighton. Thomas gave his occupation as bricklayer, his father's name as George and he is listed as a widower. Again, much of these details fit with 'our' Thomas. The plot thickens.

To follow up we decided to check the death registers for the relevant years and found the following. Firstly the death of a Maria Jupp in Jan 1840 (cause consumption). The address was given as 25 Victoria St, Brighton and Thomas is listed as a bricklayer. Yet this address is exactly the same as that given for the marriage of Thomas Jupp and Harriet Clarke in 1841. Clearly in both cases we seem to be looking at the same Thomas, thus giving us a Thomas born about 1811 with a father George. To complete the picture we obtained the death certificate of a Harriet Jupp in Jul 1841. This told us that she was the wife of a Thomas Jupp, a bricklayer and she was aged just 20. This would fit this Harriet with the same Harriet who married Thomas, widower, who's first wife had been Maria.

In conclusion I would suggest that all the evidence points to the Thomas being the same in each case and the same evidence fits perfectly with him being 'our' Thomas (date of birth, father and occupation). Clearly he had a tragic early life. Born around 1811, he moved to Brighton but married at Climping in 1837 (close to his own birthplace) to a Maria. They moved back to Brighton but she sadly died within three years. A year later he married again, to Harriet but she was dead within the year. If he really is our ancestor then he married again a year later to Ann LEWIS. Here a certain stability seems to have entered his life as he and Ann remained together until her death in 1893.

Two links in the chain still need confirming (although the circumstantial evidence is so strong) (1) Is this Thomas the one born to George and Naomi. (2) Is it the same Thomas who having lost his second wife, Harriet, then marries Ann LEWIS. We will continue to try and prove (or disprove) our lineage but in the mean time we suggest that the descendant chart listed below is the best fit to all the evidence available.
