| The Reading Experience |
I was'nt always an avid reader. In fact,I did'nt start reading for pleasure until about three years ago.We have a trailer that we keep in Greenport (go to picture section one). For 6 months of the year it is our home away from home. When I am out there I am more or less forced into a more relaxed and peaceful existence. It was here that I developed my fondness for reading.
Reading a good book is like being transported into someone elses life.It gives me a chance to stretch my brain and imagine I am another person in another place or even another world.
My books of choice are usually of a science fiction or suspence type genre. At times I like to dwell in the dark world of horror and vampires.Anne Rice satisfies this craving in me with her vampire LeStat series.I recall when reading her books I was swept into a very murky and supernatural world. It was so powerful and over whelming that I actually wanted to be a vampire.I had some very vivid dreams that I was a vampire and could do the preternatural things a vampire could do.I actually felt a loss when I came down from this literary high and realized being a vampire was never going to happen. In books however, the dream is alive.
When it comes to horror and the disturbing side of the psyche,I turn to Stephen King. The first time I read "The Stand" I could'nt put it down. It used to be that a book of such length would automaticaly disqualify it from my reading list. To my suprise,I found that I didn'nt want the book to end. After getting to know the people in the story I could identify with them and they became real to me.
I dont always live my fantasies on the other side of the mirror. There are times when I just want to settle down with a book that deals with real life and it's inherent problems. At times like this I find that Anne Rivers Siddons fills the bill for me.Her book "Colony" was one such book that engulfed me in a place I could never dream of becomeing a part of,if it were'nt for her adept style of writing and vision. There is something in me that craves to see the world from a female point of view.Ms.Siddons books are always written in this manner.Again,if it were'nt for books and novels, these desires would not be met.
To round out my reading experiance I love a good suspence story. Authors such as James Patterson,Mary Higgins Clark and Nelson DeMille satisfy this need. When it comes to building up to a thrilling climax these authors,so to say, wrote the book.
I would also like to mention the nonfiction story writters such as Vincent Bugliosis'"And the sea will tell" and Sebastian Jungers' "The Perfect Storm", are right up there when it comes to suspensefull reading.
One final word about a recent read of mine. My sister,Sue recommended a book about a boy growing up at the same time that she and I grew up.It brings up many of the events from the 60's that were almost forgotten. This book was written by Robert R. McCammon. The name of the book is "Boy's Life" A fitting title you might say since it was written by a man who grew up in that era as well. However Sue said that she enjoyed the book even though most of the main characters were boys.
It just goes to show that a well written book is something that can enlighten, educate, suprise, overwhelm, thrill and delight anyone. Anyone, that is, who is willing pick one up and devote some time to reading it.With a book, there is no time constraints. It's not like a movie that will end in roughly 2 hours and allow you to see only the movie directors point of view. When you read a book, you become the book and interpret it in a way that only you can.
I can't tell you how many times I have read a great book and then gone to see the movie and left the theater totally unsatisfied and vowing to never ruin a good memory by seeing it on the big screen. It reminds me of the joke about the two goats munching on discarded movie film behind a theater. One said,"hey, this is pretty good".And the other said,"yeah, but the book was better". |
