| TOTEM ANIMALS |
| Animal Friends that are helping you on your path. |
As we walk through this life, we sometimes forget that there are those who help us, who guide us or give us little signs that we are making the right decisions, that we are on the right path. Some of these are our animal helpers, our guides, sent to us from the Creator to ease the way a little for us. We should be aware that they are there, that they are trying to help us. Quite often, we get caught up in the rush and bustle of our day to day lives and forget to look around, to see the small ones that are trying to speak to us, to befriend us.

BEAR brings to us introspection. It lies in the west. Bear enters the cave to hibernate, to digest the year's experience. It is said that our goals reside in the West. To accomplish the goals and dreams that we carry, the art of introspection is necessary. To become like Bear, we must attune ourselves to our inner selves, to go within, to meditate. Each and every being has the capacity to quiet the mind and go within to find the answers that they seek.
The female receptive energy associated with visionaries, mystics, and shamans to prophesy is contained in this Bear energy. Bear symbolises the intuitive, right side of the brain.

DEER symbolises gentleness, the power to touch the hearts and minds of wounded beings. Both the light and the dark may be loved to create gentleness and safety for those who are seeking peace. It gives you the gentleness of spirit that is necessary to heal all wounds. It gives you the power to love others as they are. It gives us the love and compassion necessary for inner peace.

SNAKE symbolises transmutation. The transmutation of the life-death-rebirth cycle is exemlified by the shedding of snake's skin. It is the energy of wholeness, cosmic consciousness, and the ability to experience anything willingly and without resistance. It is the knowledge that all things are equal in creation, and that those things which might be experienced as poison can be eaten, ingested, integrated, and transmuted if one has the proper state of mind. Through accepting all aspects of your life, you can bring about the transmutation of the fire medicine. This fire energy, when functioning on the material plane, creates passion, desire, procreation, and physical vitality. On the emotional plane, it becomes ambition, creation, resolution, and dreams. On the mental plane, it becomes intellect, power, charisma, and leadership. When this snake energy reaches the spiritual plane, it becomes wisdom, understanding, wholeness, and connection to the Great Spirit.

SKUNK symbolises reputation. This furry little animal has a reputation that contains a great deal of power. Due to its distinctive behaviour, humans tend to give this little guy a wide berth. They RESPECT him. Skunk does not threaten your life but he sure threatens your senses. In observing the habit patterns of skunk, its easy to notice the playfulness and nonchalance of its natural behaviour. Skunk teaches you that by walking your talk and by respecting yourself, you will create a position of strength and reputation. The carriage of your body relates to others what you think about yourself. There is no need to bully, aggravate, torment, or overpower others when your sense of self is intact. As with skunk, the resonant energy field around your body tells others through the senses what you believe, on an extrasensory level. Skunk teaches you to learn to assert, without ego, what and who you are. Respect follows.

Moose sits in the North, the place of wisdom. Self esteem is its medicine because it represents the power of recognizing that wisdom has been used in a situation and that recognition is deserved for this. There is a joyfulness which only comes with a sense of accomplishment. There is no greater joy than a job well done. The way of telling others when you have achieved something is not bragging, it is moose energy at work, you have accomplished something, and you feel good and you wish to share that feeling with those around you. Moose gives us the ability to know when we need to give orders to get things done and also the willingness to get in and do things ourselves when necessary. It is the joy of sharing your experiences with younger ones and giving them encouragement for their own efforts.

DOG is our friend and symbolises loyalty. It will warn of danger and help to hunt food. They are loyal to their owners. It is the medicine of those who serve others. It is a guardian to protect those less strong. Dog will be loyal and serving no matter how it is treated. There is a warning of imbalance here also, for the worst beaten dog will still be faithful to its master who beats it. This is not how things should be. The respect and loyalty should be a two way thing. It is a reminder that you need to look at how your sense of loyalty is countermanded by your need for approval. Are you being loyal and true to yourself and your own goals, or those of another?

WOLF is the pathfinder, the forerunner of new ideas who returns to the clan to teach and share medicine. Wolf takes one mate for life and is loyal like dog. The senses of wolf are very keen, and the moon is its power ally. The moon is the symbol for psychic energy, or the unconscious that holds the secrets of knowledge and wisdom. Baying at the moon may be an indication of wolf's desire to connect with new ideas which are just below the surface of consciousness. Wolf medicine asks the teacher within all of us to come forth to aid others less fortunate in wisdom. You may need to share your personal medicine with others or your intuitive side may be trying to teach you something. Look for the lessons.

Mouse symbolises scrutiny. The power of mouse can be both a good and bad thing. It is good to see up close, to examine each small detail and know something intimately, but it is bad to chew every little thing to pieces till there is nothing left. Mouse has a highly developed sense for danger.
Things that might appear insignificant to others take on enormous importance to mouse. Mouse can appear to be a nit-picker. They are fixated on methodology. They sort and categorise and file away for later use. They like to put everything in order so that they can go and explore it more carefully at a later date.

SQUIRREL symbolises gathering. It teaches you to plan ahead for the winter when the trees are bare and there is no food to be found. This energy can get nerve-wracking, as they seem to move faster than everyone else, always rushing around doing something. They are the gatherers. They can store their energy for times of need, for future use. Squirrel is always prepared for whatever the future might throw its way. It also lets you know that change may be just around the corner, and that you may need to lighten your load if you have gathered too many 'things' on your way, things that are not entirely necessary for day to day living. These 'things' can sometimes be intangibles like thoughts, worries, stresses etc.

RABBIT symbolises fear. Rabbit is the fear caller. It calls its fears to it so strongly that they manifest and become reality. The lesson of rabbit is not to fear too much or what you fear most is what you will become. It can signal a time of worry about the future, or telling you that you are trying too hard to control that which has not yet taken form - the future. Lighten up.

WEASEL symbolises stealth. It is an energetic and ingenuius creature. Weasel ears hear what is really being told. Weasel eyes can see beneath the surface of a situation to know the many ramifications of an event. Weasel fur changes colour with the season. It will give to you the power of keen observation. Look for the hidden reasons behind things.

HORSE symbolises power. Horse is physical power and unearthly power. They can carry burdens for great distances with ease. Horse urges you to strive for balance of power. The wisdom of remembering your total journey, who helped you along the way. It brings the need for compassion, caring, teaching, loving and sharing your gifts, talents and the abilities that are the gateways to this power.

ANTELOPE symbolises action. There is a need for you 'to do' something. There is no need to be fearful and uncertain for you know what to do and now is the time to do it. Antelope symbolises knowledgeable action. It is a symbol for the antenna of your hair, which attaches you to Great Mystery by its long chords of light. Knowing of and accepting death, antelope can truly live. Antelope brings a message of higher purpose, of helping others, of acceptance and most of all of action. Use the power of antelope to make the right decision and act upon it.

FROG symbolises cleansing. Frog sings the songs that bring the rain and make the road dirt more bearable. It is in the East. Frog teaches us to honor our tears, for they cleanse the soul. All water rites belong to frog. Like frog, we are asked to know when its time to refresh, purify and refill our energies. It could be time to take a break, to replenish lost energies. To cleanse the past dirt and start fresh. The key is to find a way to rid yourself of distractions and to replace the mud in your life with clear energy. Then replenish your parched spirit, body, and mind. It can also help you to give support and energy where it is needed with others. Using frog energy you can clean negativity from the environment. Find peace in the joy of taking time to give to yourself. A part of this giving is cleansing yourself of any person, place or thing that does not contribute to your new state of serenity and replenishment.

DOLPHIN symbolises manna. This is the breath of life, the thing we humans cannot go without for more than a few minutes. Within the breath we see the rhythm of energy that all life emits. Dolphin teaches us how to release emotions through breath. As you breathe out, expel all negative thoughts and emotions with the breath and then breathe in the fresh new positive things that you need in your life. Dolphin could be telling you that this is the time to link with Great Spirit to bring answers to yourself or another.
Imitate dolphin and ride the waves of laughter, spreading joy in the world. Be mindful of your body rythms. Laughter is the medicine dolphin brings.
