Poodle, dainty breed of nonsporting dog once used as duck retrievers, truffle hunters, and trick circus dogs; very dense, curly, and harsh coat is often clipped into distinct patterns and pompons (4 standard clips are recognized: Puppy, English saddle, Continental, and Sporting); the coat may be any solid color; ears are long, wide, and hang close to side of the head; tail length and style varies with coat style; eyes are large, oval, and very dark; adult stands 15 in. (38 cm) tall or more at shoulders and weighs 40-55 lbs (18-25 kg); also called Caniche or Barbone, especially in France; name derives from German word pudel; developed in Germany in the 15th century as a water retrieving dog; coat was shorn in parts to facilitate swifter swimming; its excellent sense of smell made it a superb truffle hunter; much later became the national dog of France and a pampered companion of French aristocracy in 17th and 18th centuries; very lively and easily trainable; portrayed in paintings by artists Albrecht Durer and Goya
