LETTER #10

NOTE: Another letter from Susan Hammond to Mariah Underwood Rigney.

Aug. 21, 1929
Indianapolis, IN

My Dear Mariah:
It will soon be time for the mail man to come but I'm going to try to get a few lines off to you. I have often thought of the good visit I had with you all. It seems so much like home to be with you in your home. I can't thank you and Willie enough for your kindness to me while I was with you. I was glad to see Archie and wife again, also the dear little children. I ams so glad they are near you as they are so much company for you. Of course neither of you are going to spoil the grandchildren.
We enjoyed our visit all around but was glad to get back home.
Robert and Florrie came two weeks sooner then they intended. Bonnie Jean had a little sick spell at her Aunt Jessies so wrote to her Mother, she thought Bonnie Jean was getting a little homesick, so they began to plan at once to go and get her. She wasn't sick but a short time and not much sick then. I was ready to come too as I had gotten almost around anyway. We had between five and six hundred in Sunday School which I thought was good as our Minister and family also many of the members are away. Dr. Shullenberger and family are coming home Saturday and others are coming back so our attendence will soon be seven and eight hundred.
Love for you all including Archie and family.
Susie Hammond

LETTER #11

NOTE: This letter is from Della Godby to her Cousins, William Henry Rigney and Mariah Underwood Rigney, the parents of Archie Joe Rigney, Sr.

Nov 17-1929
Holcomb, MO

Dear Cousins,
I have been thinking I would write you, so will this afternoon. It is cool and drizzling.
I went to Sunday School this morning and we all Church. They had a little program at Sunday School which was good.
My vacation is ended I go to work in the morning. It has been a long vacation, two months. I have not been idle all this time in fact none of time.
I am glad to get back to work to my regular work work that you will get a check at the end of each month.
I often think of you and how we enjoyed you coming at evenings and sit with us awhile.
The farmers have good crops this year. They run two gins in this town. When it is fair so they pick cotton the gins run day and night and most every Sunday.
Some of the cotton fields are white with cotton yet. One cotton house burned a few nights ago. It had several thousand pounds in it.
Last Sunday afternoon we went on a persimmon hunt. We found some fine ones. Some just had two seeds in them.
We found some wild plums too. The first I had seen for a long time.
I was sorry to hear of Mrs. Sophia Carpenters death. I thought she was a fine woman.
Cousin Maria I can just see how pretty your flowers are in the house. Betties flowers are pretty - she has some roses in bloom now but I guess the frost will soon get them.
We had a letter from Effie last week. They had been to see Tilda and spent the day at Steubens. They came to see us last September we were glad that it was possible for them to come. Marguritia's(?) boy is a fine big boy and looks so much like her. He calls Chrarlie and Effie Mama and Daddy. He thought the train was a great curiosity and went out to look at it.
I am glad you have Archie and family near you. How are you all getting along? If one has health other things do not matter so much.
Well it is just a short time till Christmas. It does not mean as much to me as it once did.
We always have a tree at the school house and it is thrilling to see the children get so excited.
I would be glad to hear from you.
With love to all
from your cousin
Della Godbey

LETTER #12

NOTE: This letter is written to Mariah Underwood Rigney from an unknown sister.

Dec. 30, 1930
Danville, KY
(addressed to WH Rigney)

Dear Sister & Ella & All
Got your gift. So nice and many thanks. Mine were such a little but I could not get to town. I sent for some picture books for the boys and that is what I got. We were glad to see J but he only stayed a short time. I did look for you all untill it got so bad. We have not been off the place. The children were all home Thursday but the boys had to go back Thursday night sis stayed untill yesterday, but went home sick with a cold. Santa was good to me. No one was out only Sarah came out one day. We killed a hog today. Tell J.W. thanks and it just matches my kitchen. How are his chickens? You all come just the first chance you have for we can't come since son went away we hav no way. Maybe some day we will have a way if we live and have the luck we had last year in the store we will soon be out of dept. Then maybe we can have a little but I want to get out before we buy anything. The Curtis have moved to the Griffith place. We are so glad for they are good neighbors. Not like the Griff. but good alrite. I am not getting any eggs making very little butter so you see I am very poor. Hope Lucy and boys are better. Dad went to town today with some hogs to sell, came home sick and went to bed. Can't stand anything anymore. Dad was so glad to see J he thinks a lot of J. He looked well. Have to work hard we are putting on a delivery truck the first of the year a cash delivery. Just have to, those rich guys would come for their things. So much easier for them of course, they will go trade where they will send. So that is the way. All of you come anytime you can, I am all ways here. Thanks again, lots of love to you all.
Aunty/Annty(?) D. Sister

LETTER #13

NOTE: This letter was written to Ella Rigney Hampton, sister of Archie Joe Rigney, from a friend in Iowa. Their father was William Henry Rigney.

Dear Ella,
I am a long time getting my Christmas letters written but better late than never I suppose. John and I are alone now been alone since last Monday. Tracy has gone to a convention at St. Petersburg, Florida. He left about five days ahead of time and has been visiting other points in Florida. He wasn't feeling so good when he left but I trust he is feeling better now. I think his trouble was more business depression and worry than anything else. This has surely been a hard year on insurance sales men as well as all others. There are some thing people have to buy but them seem to feel they can do without insurance until they get sick - then more people are wanting it than you can imagine. Of course they can't take an examination then - thus it goes.
Tracy sold over $200000(?) and qualified for this trip but his expenses have been rather heavy. He is away so much that John and I have hardly missed him since he has been away. I guess we would have missed him yesterday (as he is usually here on Sundays) but it was John's Birthday and we had two boys out to dinner. John was ten yesterday - think of it. My how he is growing. He weighs 75 pounds. he is looking rather husky now and is doing fine work in school. Not long ago they were given the Columbian Achievement test and he got highest in his room. He is the youngest in there too. You can imagine how glad/proud(?) I felt.
Before I go any further I want to thank you for the Christmas remembrance. Underware is just what I need and those are so pretty. John appreciated his paper too and wrote a letter to Aunt Ann on it right away. he has some more to write pretty soon.
I wanted awfully much to go home for Christmas this year but Tracy was going on this trip and couldn't go so I didn't either. I don't like our family separated at Christmas time.
We went to Des Moines tho and had a very nice time. Tracy came on home and John & I stayed several days, then he came back for us. We have been very well except colds. Tracy & I each had one and my cough hangs on as usual but it is some better now.
They are well at home I think. Eliza Clay took cold when she was home for Christmas but is feeling better again. She has been quite a bit better of late. I mean her general health. She found a doctor in Mt. Sterling who seems to understand her trouble. The others were doctoring her goiter but this one doctored her for female disorders. They live in Kenova now. When they first married Henry worked there in an insulator plant but he wasn't quite satisfied so gave up his job and they moved to Owingsville(?) about 30 miles or less from home and he worked in a hardware store. Well, he didn't like it at all so as soon as he could get back to the plant in Kenova he went. they had before lived in Catlettsburg(?) but this time they live in Kenova near his work. Bobby is about the same age as J.W. isn't he? Bobby will be 6 the 3rd of Feb. and he surely is a spry & peppy youngester - always has been.
Billy Evans youngster will not be 10 until the 5th of Aug. He is somewhat of an oddity. He doesn't seem like a boy at all. He likes to dress up and go away - be a ladies man etc. He is fine in school and always has good grades - better than John gets. But John is a real live boy - crazy about geography & history etc. He is in his glory when he can go in the backyard, build a fire & cook bacon or potatoes or some other such food.
I am about as busy as ever. Have tried to get out of a few jobs but there are always others coming up that I get caught up in somehow.
Last week it was something every day. Monday I had the Womens Club Bible Class and Tuesday morning I had my regular Tues morning Bible class. Wednesday noon I attended the Women's Club luncheon and Wed. night the Rabbit Association (I am secretary). Thurs. morning I went to see a lady who has been sick & is still shut in. Our SS teacher training class didn't meet as the Minister (who teaches) wa away. Friday we had our all day meeting of the W.C.T.W. with a covered dish luch at noon. Friday night after helping the hostess wash the dishes our S.S. class had a covered dish supper and social Saturday morning. I worked with my rabbits and had company then had to go to town then came back and clean my house. Sunday there was S.S. & Church again then a birthday dinner and guests on thru the evening. I took them home about 930 pm.
I guess you wonder what a "covered dish" affair is. I did when I first came here. Everybody goes and takes a dish of food and bread and butter sandwhiches and the dishes that we use ourselves. We put this food all together and take our dishes home to wash. We had our Preacher who wanted to be high faluting and he called it a "Tureen Supper" but everybody else still says "Covered Dish" here.
We have a splendid Preacher now.. Rev. Dennis - came here from Sioux Falls S. Dak. He is Irish and a splendid worker. He preaches with virm(?) & vigor and feels all he preaches. He is a fine mixer and Pastor as well.
Thanks you again for our gifts. John is studying an atlas now and is talking to me all the time and asking questions so you can imagine my ease writing.
I hope all of you are well now and happy. Where does Archie live and what does he do? Remember me to Mr. & Mrs. Rigney & write to me when you can.
Love Polly
PS I don't write often but I seem to make up for less of time when I do write. We had a nice snow for Christmas but it went and we have had wonderfully beautiful weather until now. We have a snow (I judge) of ten inches anyway and it is rather cold too.

LETTER #14

NOTE: This letter is apparently written to Mariah Underwood Rigney, wife of William Henry Rigney, but as of 02-27-2001 I do not know who it is from.

No Date or name as to who it is addressed.

Dear Auntie:
Mother & I went to Lexington Sunday & Monday she went to see Dr. McClymonds. A Stomach specialist. He made x-ray pictures & said it was still gaul trouble. Said the gaul duct fills-we came home Monday nite & she went back yesterday evening & he is going to gie a treatment-going to drain her stomach through a rubber tube. She said she wold come back tonight if she was able & if not she would come. So it's now 5:30 she hasn't called so I guess she is coming home. Dad, Gomcu(?), Ethyl & the kids started to see you & Uncle Will Sunday afternoon and had a wreck at Shelby City. Mrs. Grubbs ran into them, tore one wheel down & one fender off so they had to come back home - hope Uncle Will is better. Did Archie get his glasses? There were no changes.
I'm awfully busy so will close. I write you again about mother.
Hope you are all well-
Lovingly Cathernie?
