Halfway Down-A.A. Milne
Halfway down the stairs
Is a stair
Where I sit.
There isn't any
Other stair
Quite like
It.
I'm not at the bottom,
I'm not at the top;
So this is the stair
Where
I always
Stop.
Halfway up the stairs
Isn't up,
And isn't down.
It isn't in the nursery,
It isn't in the town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head:
"It isn't really
Anywhere!
It somewhere else
Instead!

Emma's Store- Dorthy Aldis
The store we like best is Emma's store.
It hasn't any revolving door.
It hasn't a floorman neat and polite:
"Third floor, Modom, and turn to your right."
No elavators go up and down it.
Nothing's the way it is downtown. It
Hasn't a special place for dresses;
Everything's jumpled in cozy messes-
Washcloths and lapm shades, paper dolls, slippers,
Candy and shoestrings, umbrellas and zippers;
No matter what's needed or how great the hurry
As long as there's Emma's, you don't need to worry,
And she never minds how long you stay.
"Why sure, take your time, dear" Emma will say.

Mother to Son-Langston Hughes
Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor-
Bare
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where thaere ain't been no light.
SO, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you find it kinder har.
Don't you fall now-
Fore I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

The Clown-Myrtle Stickrath Jessup
Hey, you, with the big red nose!
Where did you get those raggedy clothes?
Your mouth reaches from ear to ear,
And the rest of your face is just one big smear.
The kids all love you and grown-ups do, too.
They scream and laugh at the things that you do.
You walk on a rope and pretend you will fall.
You never get hurt, but you have a close call.
Your feet are so big you can hardly walk.
You have a big smile but you never talk.
You roll back the years for old women and men
And make them feel like kids once again.
You must love peple and have a kind heart.
To dress so funny and act such a part.
And when the circus comes to town,
The most loved performer is the dear funny clown.
