For a continuous supply of tomatoes fresh from your garden, plant a few different kinds - beefsteak for making tomato sandwiches, cherry tomatoes for packing in a lunch box, plum tomatoes for canning and the winter-storage varieties that last longer off the vine without refrigeration.

Peanuts are ready to harvest when the inside of the shell is brown with darker veins and the skins of the seeds are pink.

Allow winter squash to ripen in the field until the shell is quite hard. Don't allow it to be exposed to frost, since this will shorten the length of time you can keep it. Store picked squash in a dry place at temperature of 15 degrees C.

Leaf lettuce thrives in nearly any soil, but rich well-cultivated soil is required for the heading varieties.

Don't have room for a garden? You can plant a traditional herb garden on a windowsill in the kitchen to have a fresh supply handy at all times.

Muskmelons prefer rich sandy loam. Sow 10 - 12 seeds per hill.
