The following people went on the Texas trip:
William T. Gamel (Will) and wife Selma
Charley C. Gamel and wife Mary
Nancy J. Gamel and husband James Lee
James Lemuel Gamel |
The Gamel family left for Texas in the late 1860-1870's after the Civil War. They left to meet their brother Benjamin Franklin Gamel who went to Texas.
Benjamin had wrote home and told them that they could buy all the land they wanted for fifty cents an acres. When they left Dallas, Georgia for Texas they had 4 covered wagons, a team of horses, oxens and each had a milk cow. They were on the road four months. When they got to Louisana it was raining. They camped there a month before they could make it through the mud. William T. (Wills) eldest child died on the trip. He is buried somewhere in Louisana. When they reached Cameron, Texas they couldn't find their brother Benjamin, as he had moved on to Gustine, Texas. They didn't like Texas and decided to return to Georgia.
When they got back as far as Clay County, Alabama they had only one wagon left between the four families. One horse and the milk cow to help pull the wagon the last miles of their journey. In Clay County, Alabama they all made their last home, where each settled down and raised their families. |
