Now that Nintendo has confirmed that F-Zero: Maximum Velocity will be entirely new game, we can go all out with this preview! The game is set 25 years after the original game and will apparently involve descendents of the original pilots and speed machines that are faster and even more unsafe than ever before, and best of all they're all new!
With that out the way, what can we expect from the series this time? It's fair to say that F-Zero's trademark perfect handling will almost certainly be there, with the L and R buttons on the GBA used to tilt your ship in order to corner more tightly and - just possibly - to ram your opponents as well. The tracks are all new, though we wouldn't bet against one of them being called "Mute City". There's no need to worry about the series reverting to Mode 7, as the jumps will all be there. I doubt Nintendo will get the loops in, but did they really add anything to the game anyway? Not really, it just felt like you were
racing forwards on a straight piece of track, so it's no big loss.
We'll drop our negative comments about the graphics in our previous preview as the new screenshots show tha they're actually extremely good, easily imitating the look of the Nintendo 64 version and, just so you know, it will
have the "intense speed" that is the trademark of the F-Zero series, so long term fans need not worry!
Interestingly, it appears we were wrong about the boosts. The new shots
have the nitro symbols in their lower right-hand corners, showing that it will almost certainly use the SNES system. We also see evidence that
there will be a grand total of 15 machines on the track at the same time. While this may be only half of what F-Zero X was capable of, it is much, much more than in the SNES version. The ships also seem to have a lot more specs to consider when choosing, now being rated in seven different areas, including balanceand boost duration.

Of course, the best thing will be that, like MKA, there's a four player link-up mode. The original F-Zero never had multiplayer support but F-Zero X proved that the series is perfectly adapted to it and can be a lot of fun. Just another thing to wet your pants about (figuratively speaking of course)! If all goes well, we'll be seeing F-Zero: Maximum Velocity at the GBA's western launch in July next year. Whether
you're a long time fan of the series, or just like the idea of whizzing around in a plasma-fuelled hovership at
supersonic speeds, I suggest you keep a very close eye on this one. It could just possibly be the racer to beat Mario Kart Advance.
