No Hurricane shocker here
By Nathanchamp

Tulsa, Okla. – Carr and Berrian led the way, again, as Fresno State jumped out to a 31-3 and beating a very good Tulsa Golden Hurricane team by a final of 38-17. Bryce McGill had another stellar game with two picks and a couple of tackles. The defense led by Alan Harper was again devastating in holding Tulsa’s passing attack at bay all day. They tried fake field goals and some special plays, but nothing was doing on these Dogs.

The Fresno State team improved to 4-0, 1-0 in WAC, with three of those games being on the road and all being very tough. After all the hard times on the road it finally looks like it has paid off. The Bulldogs have a chance to gain a spot in the polls and maybe two with #5 Florida State falling terribly to North Carolina and the game between #8 Oregon-USC still very much in doubt. The Dogs will begin preparation for the other WAC dogs, Louisiana Tech. The game will be played in Fresno where the Dogs have the nation’s third longest home winning streak, depending of course on whether Oregon can hold off USC.

After Tulsa stopped Fresno State and then marched down the field for a field goal it looked as though it would be a tough day for the Dogs, but that was never the case. Tulsa could not get any momentum the rest of the way. Golden Hurricane Quarterback Blankenship had a tough day of pressure forcing him into many bad decisions and a few turnovers. As usual the Dogs were just bigger, faster, and stronger. The better team won again. Look for Tulsa to rebound and finish somewhere from two to four in the WAC.

Recruit Wire: Stone likes the Dogs

Fresno State may soon get a new leader for the future. Tell me if these characteristics don’t remind you of somebody: 6-3 195 pounds, big arm, very accurate. Um, does a current Bulldog Quarterback named David Carr come to mind? For me it certainly does. Ryan Stone of Claremont (CA) possesses all of those attributes and then some. His deep ball could very well be unmatched in the state. His play action and on the ball fakes are wonderful and very deceiving.

Ryan does need to work on his footwork while dropping back in the pocket. His positioning of the ball right before he sets to throw needs a little polishing as well. Both can easily be corrected. All of a sudden Fresno State has once again become a great place for Quarterbacks like Stone to develop. The Bulldogs offense is perfect for a quarterback to grow because it offers a short passing game that sets up the deep ball.

Stone also has that rare ability to throw on the run. He is just as accurate running to his right as he is when he is set. As a sophomore he threw for 1,394 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a junior he added 1,436 yards and 11 touchdowns. Both totals come on a Claremont team that is considered to have a running based offense. The future looks very bright for this kid and for the leadership of Fresno State if the Dogs offer and he decides that is where he would like to go.

The best news is he has already chosen a clear leader. Guess who it is? Fresno State. Stone said, “I really like Fresno State.” He later said, “They’re (Fresno State) calling me weekly, but I haven’t been offered yet.” Auburn has offered and he continues to be contacted by Cal, Northern Arizona, and Idaho State. My personal opinion is that he will sign as soon as the Dogs offer. I also think the Dogs have yet to offer because they are talking to a lot of high profile quarterbacks on the West Coast. Look for Stone to be running the Dogs offense in a couple of years. You will not be disappointed.

Look for more Recruit Wire in the future for further news on Bulldog recruiting. If you have any questions feel free to contact me via E-mail, nathanchamp@msn.com.

United again

I know this site is about Fresno State football and basketball, but I just had to say something in light of the World Trade Center tragedy and the war that is on the way. I am as American as they come, that is how I see myself, and there is no doubt that I have suffered like many of you who watch the T.V. or listen to the radio. Never in my wildest thoughts did I think anything like this would or could ever happen. I am horrified by such a display of brutality, yet in complete awe of the unity that has become of it. The outpouring of compassion across the nation leads me to believe that America is stronger then ever, something that I thought had somehow silently slipped through our fingers. It looked as though we had begun to be isolated from a world we so helped establish. Europe had recently started to stray from us and not so long ago we were divided bitterly like apples and oranges over a tedious presidential race. All that seems so distant, so far, so meaningless. We have again become united under one cause as...Americans. Somehow, someway us Americans always seem to know what to do. I don't know why it feels like that, maybe it's just me. Or maybe we are guided by the grace of God. This country is blessed, make no mistake about it. I get the chills and am almost brought to tears just driving down a small suburban street lined with American flags on every porch. A firefighter in New York, a hero of unmatched courage, answered the question of, "Do you think you are a hero?" He gave such a great American response, "I think the people are the real heroes." Amazing. Thank you America for sticking it out, pulling it together, and and once again standing tall. God bless the United Stated of America!
Badgers get bitten (9/9/01)
by Nathanchamp

The Dogs bite was louder than it's bark. Wisconsin now knows. In a crowd of 75,000+ fans, in Big Ten country, and playing a team that had won two consecutive Rose Bowls the Dogs proved they could play and beat the big boys, again. Everybody in the central valley screamed and threw their dog hats to the ground when the Badgers of Wisconsin ran rabidly and uncontested down the field for the first touchdown. Never again did the Badgers easily march the field for another score. When the halftime gun sounded everything was going as planned, the #23 Badgers were leading the #19 Bulldogs 20-10 and winning the battle in the trenches. They figured their big lines would just wear the dogs down and that would be it. Typical Big Ten football, right? Wrong! The only problem with that plan is that it wasn't the Badgers plan. It was the Bulldogs plan. Opening kickoff of the second half was returned 96 yards by Bernard Berrian and a two point conversion cut the lead to two, 20-18. Right there. That was the spot in the game were it was over. Even though the scoreboard didn't show it, the players did. On the next Wisconsin possesion Sorgi went back to pass and got picked off. A few plays later found Rodney Wright leaping into the endzone on a wide receiver screen pass from David Carr. Like lightining the Dogs were ahead, for good. At the end of the half the Dogs had stormed to a 32-20 victory on Wisconsin's home field. In fact, the plan worked so well that Fresno State would have won on the second half alone where they outscored the Badgers 22-0. Utah State looms on the horizon and they are looking to avoid be bitten. But when you come into the doghouse, there is no avoiding it.
