| A Lifetime of Memories |
The Suitcase
On our journey through life we become collectors of
artifacts and things that give us stature, recognition or just
pleasure. It begins in our youth and continues on with us
throughout our lives. We set out by collecting, toys, dolls,
baseball cards and various other trinkets to remind us of our
childhood and as we grow older the collectibles become larger
and more expensive. Some collect Stamps, coins, jewelry,
postcards, clocks, tools and even cars just to name a few. We find
ourselves collecting them because of memories or just because
we want to and can afford them. There never really has to be a
reason to start collecting.
Unfortunately it doesn't stop there. We reach an age where
we decide to share our life with someone else who may also be a
collector of something totally different then ourselves. Each
collecting their own until the house becomes cluttered, but this is
accepted because it is a form of treasure for both.
At some point some of the collectibles may become
valuable and worth a great deal more then we paid for them.
The truth is it doesn't really matter because to us it is the most
valuable collection in the world anyways. We may become obsessed and
overprotective when anyone goes near or touches our possessions
but that is understandable.
What is this driving force that compels us to make this
character change, perhaps we just needed something to focus on so
that we could feel like we have a purpose in life or just our way
of having something to pass down to our children so that they will have
something to remember and cherish us for. Unfortunately in
life, one persons treasure may be another ones garbage.
When the time comes in our lives where we must
decide what is most important and necessary to us, it is amazing
what we conclude. Some of the things that were so important to
us throughout life seem to loose there priorities.
At that point in time we find that a lifetime of memories and
artifacts that once filled our home can be stuffed into just one
mall suitcase. If someone were to open it and look inside they
could uncover everything there is to know about us by what we
packed.
What brings it all into prospective is when we reach a tragic
point in our lives where we are faced with an important choice
and must walk away from it all. At that point we find that none of
it really mattered. Its amazing that when the time comes we
must decide what is important in our life, we can walk away with
a lifetime in one small suitcase.
