November Morning on the River
Special Times

It was mid November and another duck season was upon us. Although there were many regrets about an early morning reveille the thought of the pleasures the river would provide me that day, would far outweighed the inconveniences that it caused. Within fifteen minutes of rolling out of a warm cozy bed, I was dressed and headed out the front door and was immediately greeted by the brisk morning air. Even though it seemed chilly on my face it proved to be quite invigorating, causing all my senses to come alive. I jumped in my SUV and headed for the boat launch where my brother was waiting patiently for my arrival. I placed my gear in his boat and we headed for open water.

In approximately one hour it would be high tide which makes for perfect conditions for duck hunting. The sky was clear and the stars so bright they seemed as though you could reach out and touch them. The moon light was shimmering of the waves and looked like sparklers on the fourth of July. The wind was blowing in a southerly direction against the tide causing two foot swells and white caps.

We had only one hour before the sun would peak over the Berkshires to illuminate the new day. We had to arrive at our destination, set out the decoys and position the boat for the hunt all in that short period of time. To make up for the time we had lost my brother opened the throttle to full speed. The bow plowed through the swells with ease as the keel split the waves for an easier passage. As our vessel slapped off each oncoming wave a fine mist of water broke over the bow and landing upon our faces. The bow spray felt so cold to the touch yet it was refreshing and stimulating at the same time.

Upon reaching our destination the moon seemed as though it knew help was needed and assisted us by lighting the way. We trolled to our spot in the bay, set out our decoys and positioned the boat without the using any foam of artificial light. All this was done with just moments to spare before the sun creped over horizon. It appeared all our efforts had fallen into place and seemed perfect as the morning hunt was about to begin.

In one short breathtaking moment the sun made its way over the horizon, illuminating the morning sky. You could feel the warmth of its rays as they touched upon our chilled faces. The birds began to sing as they took to the morning sky. Fish began jumping all around the boat, as if the sun was their alarm clock and they new it was time to awake. On the shore behind us we could hear turkeys gobbling as they drop from there roost in the tall trees. The dear seemed to appear out of nowhere as they made way to the river for a morning drink. The squirrels were chattering while running through the fallen leaves, foraging for the acorns that had fallen during the high wind of the evening. It was as though the whole world drew its energy from the rising sun, causing it to come to life.

At that point I was thankful and knew how fortunate I was to be able to watch the whole world come alive. The Lord was showing His handy work by making me realize He had made this fine day for us to enjoy.

Sleep well my Friend wherever you may be.
