Frigid Obsession Written By: Jen Brown 11/27/02-?? What happens when obsession turns deadly… Chapter 1 Kaitlin picked up her book bag and headed out of the classroom. “So how’s the first day going so far, Kat?” Mrs. Hill asked. “Fine, except I’m probably gonna get lost.” Kat laughed. “Well, you’ll figure it out. Now go on get to class, don’t worry you’ll have a great year.” Kat smiled and left the room. She went to her next class, after she found it of course. Then it was time for lunch. She went down to the Cafeteria and sat at a table with her friends, Kit and Cassie. Kit and Kaitlin had been friends for a very long time. But Cassie was a new girl. But she seemed awesome. Though she was a senior. Kat and Kit were only in their sophomore year. Well the bell rang and everyone went off to their classes. Kit and Kat went to theatre. At least they had one class together. Though it seemed to be a very boring class indeed. Well on with the story. Kaitlin left the gym and had to walk back to the main building for 7th period. As she was walking up the three flights of stairs she thought to herself. “How will I ever get through this year?” She hated school, she had for the past few years and this year wouldn’t be any different. “Finally” She said exhausted, as she made it to the top of the stairs. She was already late for class. “Now where the hell is Mr. Smith’s room.” She looked up at the door numbers, then began walking backwards, to look back the other direction, perhaps she had missed it. “Man, I will be in so much shit already, this sucks” She said out loud. Just then she backed into someone, her notebook fell to the floor. “Oh geez, let me help you with that.” The guy said. “No it’s fine, I guess I shouldn’t have been walking backwards.” They both laughed. And stood up. “well I hope I get to see you again, I’m Stu.” The guy said. “Yeah, I’m Kaitlin.” Kat said as she smiled and turned away. “Wait.” She called. “Hey, Stu, do you happen to know where room 307 is?” She asked. “Uh, yeah,” Stu laughed. “Come on I’ll take you” They walked down the hall talking about everything, like they had known each other forever. “OK I thought you said you knew where Mr. Smith’s room is.” Kat interrupted him in the middle of a sentence. “Mr. Smith? That’s where you’re going? So am I, I didn’t know the room number.” Stu laughed. “Come on, he’s probably gonna bitch us out for being late. He’s a real dork. And I’ve had to suffer through his class for 3 years now.” They both laughed and headed back down the hall they had just come from. “Shh maybe he won’t notice.” He whispered and opened the door. “Stuart Andrew” a booming yet somewhat nasal voice shouted. “Where have you been? Oh and you must be Kaitlin Wilson. So good of you guys to join us.” Mr. Smith said to the two. “Listen we’re sorry to miss your oh so interesting class, Sir. But she couldn’t find your room. So I had to show her, Sir.” The Class laughed at Stu’s sarcasm. “And it took 25 minutes to show her?” Mr. Smith asked. “Well, I didn’t know this was the room she was going to Sir.” Stu replied smartly. “Kaitlin you sit here, this is Tony.” Tony and Kaitlin said hello to each other. “And Mr. Andrew. This must be a record, but you’ll spend your lunch tomorrow with Mr. Camp. In detention.” Smith said angrily. “YES! Whoo I’ve finally reached my goal, Thank You oh so kind generous sir.” Stu bowed to the teacher. The class laughed again. “Take your seat, Stu, or you’ll spend lunch with ME.” Smith ordered. Even Stu didn’t wanna mess with that. So he quickly took his seat behind Tony and Kaitlin. And he remarkably paid attention for the last half of class. Except the fact that he kept poking Kaitlin with a pen. This class was definitely gonna be interesting, Kaitlin thought to herself. And with two hot guys, what could go wrong. But also as she feared this class was just as dreadfully boring as the other six, This would be a long year for Kaitlin she could tell already. Chapter 2 “Oh my god did I tell you about the two hot guys in my science class?” Kaitlin said in the middle of lunch on the second day of school. “No so tell us.” Kit said. “What? I just did, there are two hot guys in my science class.” They both laughed. Cassie just sat there, she never laughed much. “So who are they?” Kit asked. “Stu Andrew and Tony Roberts, oh my god they are fine.” Kat answered. “Well you should introduce us.” “Kit, are you forgetting about Chris? Just because he’s not here right now, don’t mean you can go off cheating on him ya know.” Kat scolded. “Yeah, Yeah, well you seem like your thinking about them all the time, what about Locke? Did you forget about him? And he’s your fiancée. Chris is just my boyfriend.” Kit snapped back at Kat. “Yeah I know but I can still look right?” “Only if I can too.” They both laughed and left the cafeteria. Cassie just sat there, she seemed cool to begin with but now she wasn’t clicking to well with Kaitlin and Kit. * * * “Should I ask her out? I really like her.” Stu asked. Tony and Stu were doing some skating downtown. “I don’t know man, you don’t even really know her. And I heard she’s engaged or something.” Tony said as he hopped on his skateboard and headed off. Stu sat there and thought about it for a few. He didn’t really think he had a chance with Kaitlin anyway. But it was all he could think about. He snapped up his roller blades. And started out to work on his routine. After a few hours the boys were calling it quits for the day. “I think I’ll write her.” Stu said out of nowhere. “Who?” Tony looked confused. After all they hadn’t even been talking about anyone. “Kaitlin of course, I’ll write her and ask her out, maybe to the Mardi Gras dance. Whatcha think?” Stu looked over at Tony. “Again man I Don’t know. don’t think you should. You don’t really even know her. Wait a few weeks or something, at least find out if she’s engaged or not. OK?” Tony answered, clearly getting annoyed with Stu constantly talking about Kaitlin. “Yeah ok fine whatever, I guess.” Stu answered. “Good, now let’s get out of here ok.” Tony said laughing. And they drove away to go to Taco Bell, their fave fast food restaurant. * * * The next couple of weeks went by fast. Maybe this year wouldn’t be so unbearable after all. Kaitlin had her best friends, what more did she need. She and her ex-boyfriend got on speaking terms again. So that was a big plus. Kaitlin, Stu, Kit, Tony, and Trent. Were having the best school year so far. Sure most of the teachers sucked, but there were a couple that seemed like they were just teens like them. Nothing can go wrong, or so Kaitlin thought. But she was wrong. September 11, 01 was the day. Everyone went to their first period classes, just another normal and boring day, or so it seemed. The bell rang, and the halls filled with rowdy teenagers. Then a cheerleader ran past Kat, yelling something about an attack on the US. Kaitlin looked confused. So she continued walking to her 2nd period class. “Mr. Parker. Um I think you should turn on the TV. Some chick was just running up and down the halls saying the US is under attack. I dunno if it’s true or not but you should check.” Kaitlin informed the teacher as she walked in. Mr. Parker pulled out the TV and got it all hooked up, as the room filled with students. Sure enough, news that no one ever wants to hear. Terrorists had hit the US hard. Flying two planes into the World Trade Center in New York City. The second plane hit just as Mr. Parker turned on the television. Then the news reporter told about a plane hitting the Pentagon. And another that crashed in Pennsylvania. Some of the kids were acting like Jackasses and making fun of the situation. But not Kat she had a really bad feeling about it. When it was time for third period she entered the classroom. But all of the students were being pricks, and so Mrs. Hill took Kat to the teacher’s lounge to watch the broadcast. “Oh my god, this is awful.” Kat said in shock. “Who could do this?” “ I don’t know, sweetie, I don’t know.” Mrs. Hill answered. The next hour lasted so long for Kaitlin she wanted to get home to see if her mom had heard about it. As soon as the bell rang for lunch she ran out of the school and headed home. She rushed home, nearly running. And burst into her house. “Mom have you heard?” “Yeah, I can’t believe it either.” Mrs. Wilson said from her chair in the corner. Kaitlin sat on the couch and looked at the news. It was an awful thing. They kept replaying the footage of the two towers being hit and crumbling. Kaitlin grabbed a snack and headed out the door. Her mind racing, she was never very patriotic, but this just brought it out. She was really upset because she knew a lot of people had just lost their lives. And they didn’t deserve to. But the worst was still to come. She stepped onto the campus. When Devon came running up to her. “Kaitlin, I’m glad you decided to come back today.” He said breathlessly. “But I hate to have to tell you this.” “What? Devon what’s wrong?” “It’s Locke, he was in the WTC, and I just got off the phone with his dad, they haven’t found him or his mother.” He said looking straight into her eyes. “What? No, How? What was he doing there?” She yelled at him. “They were touring the place when it happened.” “I can’t believe this” she said in shock. And they went into the school. And suffered through the day, without hearing any news about Locke or his mother. That night after Kat got home she told her mother about Locke and Angel. After explaining all of it to her mom, she called up Kit. Kit had been absent with the flu. So she didn’t know about Locke. Kat explained everything. Kit assured her that all would be ok. After they hung up, Mrs. Wilson reminded her that Jay, her father, would be having surgery the next day. After all that’s happening Kat was totally not wanting her dad to have to have surgery. But she went to bed early, after taking time to pray for her fiancé and after a lot of tossing and turning she finally fell asleep. Bright and early the next day, Wednesday, they were at the hospital with Jay. Everything with the surgery went great. And Mrs. Wilson went in to see him after he got out of the recovery room. Kat was going insane not knowing what was going on. She knew that Devon wouldn’t be in school that day either. So she went down the creaky elevator to the courtesy phone in the main lobby of St. Joe’s. She called him up. “Hey Devon, What’s up? Anything new?” She said into the receiver. “Well I’m really sorry. But I have bad news.” Devon’s voice was a bit strained, and she new something terrible must have happened. “The good news is they found them. The bad news is…” His voice trailed off. “What? What is it Devon tell me.” She demanded. “Angel passed away this morning at 8:30, just after they found them.” He said, now fully crying. Kat gasped, and said goodbye. She went back up to the waiting room. She filled her mom in on everything when she came out. And she filled her dad in later. She couldn’t believe what had happened. And even though she never admitted it she knew that there was a slim chance of Locke’s survival. Devon had told her about the injuries the two had had. Angel no doubt had died from her head injury. But Locke was still unconscious. He had severe burns and cuts. So he had lost a lot of blood. His back and arm were both slashed. And all Kat could think about was the fact that this bastard Osama Bin Laden hadn’t been found and punished. He caused the attacks. One man destroyed so many lives. And that’s what completely pissed off Kat. In the mid after noon, the hospital released her dad, and he would be staying with Kat and her mom for a few days. As soon as she got home she called Kit again. Kit offered her comfort. And talking to her best friend seemed to ease Kat. * * * Kat didn’t go to school the next morning again. But at lunch time her mother told her that she should go and see if there was any news. She reluctantly went. Again, Devon met her at the side of the campus. He didn’t even have to tell her. She knew. She could tell by the look in his eyes. But he approached and said the words she didn’t want to hear. “Locke, passed away about 30 minutes ago.” Devon said blankly. “Oh my god.” Kat said. They hugged, crying on each other’s shoulder. It was like a knife had stabbed her, the hurt was unbearable. “We shouldn’t tell them.” Devon said calming down just a little. “They wouldn’t understand, and they would be constantly pitying us. I don’t want that. It would be a constant reminder of Locke, and I just can’t handle that.” He finished. “Yeah, I know.” Kat said through her tears. They hugged again and Devon went home. He was Locke’s cousin and he was excused. They told the principle but no one else. Kat went to the restroom to freshen up a bit before heading to class. For the next 3 hours she couldn’t think of anything but Locke and all those memories. She couldn’t concentrate on her schoolwork or anything. She kept it all bottled up and didn’t tell anyone what her problem was. At 3:20 the bell rang. Thank God she thought. And grabbed her book bag. The whole time Stu had been flirting with her. It was so annoying and she couldn’t handle it anyway. All she could think about was her fiancé and how she would never see him again. She left the room quickly, ignoring Stu and Tony yelling for her. They knew something was wrong but they didn’t know what. And she had no intentions of telling them, she only wanted to get home to her family. Chapter 3 Mrs. Wilson called Kit that night. Kaitlin was crying too hard to even see to dial the phone. “Kit,” Mrs. Wilson said into the phone. “Will you talk to Kat? She’s really down right now. Locke died today, and she’s taking it really hard, of course.” Of course Kit was right there for her friend. She comforted her as she had in the past, when Kat’s grandmother had passed on. For the next few months Kat stayed up to date on the developments with Osama. They still hadn’t caught the bastard. And the anger was building up in Kat, more and more each passing day. But somehow she found the strength to make it through. For a while she talked to God every night, he was the only one she could trust enough to tell him every single thing. And that helped her. As the months past nothing truly got better, only worse for Kaitlin. Her grades were failing, she lost all interest in school, and didn’t even make an effort anymore. And Stu was not helping. She was constantly being told about his never ending obsession with her, which was something she didn’t care to hear. Sure, he was cute, and nice. But she wasn’t in the mood to hook up with someone so soon after Locke’s passing. * * * “Ok I’m going to give her this note this time. No more beating around the bush. I’m just going to give it to her. Then maybe she’ll go with me to the Winter Dance, whatcha think?” Stu asked folding a note. “I think you’re insane, she likes you as a friend man, nothing more yet. Come on she’s been acting really cold lately. Something’s bugging her, wait and find out what that is. And anyway you ain’t got the balls to give it to her, admit it.” Tony laughed. “I could. And I will. Here she comes now.” Stu said pointing towards Kat coming up the hall. “Hey boys, what’s up?” She said to them. “Uh Nothing, um Listen Kat, Would you uh….” Stu stammered. “Would I…what?” She asked. “Uh….tell Tony, Rollerblading is better than boarding.” Stu quickly thought of an answer. “What?” Kat laughed. “I don’t know anything about either.” She laughed again and walked away. Tony erupts with laughter. “Smooth bro real smooth” He said laughing. “I’ll get her, believe me I will.” Stu said walking away. * * * By the time February rolled around, Kat had became completely fed up with school. And her mom pulled her out. The only teacher that didn’t want her to leave was Mrs. Hill. But after they explained everything with 9-11. She understood, and told Kat that she could always come back later when things settle down. * * * “I can’t believe she dropped out. What am I going to do without her?” Stu complained. “Man, you need help. Listen if it means that much to you write her, or call her and tell how you feel. Maybe you can even talk her into coming back.” Tony said. “Yeah, write her and have Cassie give it to her, you will right Cass?” “Sure, No problem.” Cassie answered. “OK I will.” Stu said as he walked back to his desk to write the note. He comes back over about 10 minutes later. “Well where is it? I’ll stop by and give it to her after class.” Cass said. “Well.” “What? Did you not write one?” Tony asked. “Well I wrote it, but I can’t give it to her just forget about it.” Stu said sheepishly as he walked away. “You need therapy bro.” Tony called to him. Cassie and Tony shared a good laugh after that. Stu went to Kat’s house that night, but just to say Hi. He walked clear across town just to say hi. Tony would have definitely made an Obsession joke but, Kat didn’t even seem to notice Stu’s weird behavior. Kat went on with her life as best she could. She didn’t hear anything from either of the boys all throughout the rest of the school year or most of the summer. Chapter 4 August ‘02 “So you are completely over Kat, right?” Tony asked. “Yeah, totally. Why?” Stu replied. “I was just thinking about asking her to come watch me skate on Monday.” “Oh so you think you’ve got a chance? She gave me the cold shoulder all year last year. I don’t think you have a chance.” “Well you maybe right but if you don’t like her then you won’t mind me asking. Right?” “Yeah I guess.” Stu said looking off. “good, I’ll be right back.” He grabbed the phone and left the room. Stu just sat there staring off in the direction Tony left. * * * The phone rings in Kat’s house. “Hello?” Mrs. Wilson said into the phone. “Yeah uh is Kat there?” Tony asked. “Hold on” She said and put the phone down. “Kat, someone on the phone.” “Who is it?” “I don’t know but it’s a guy” Mrs. Wilson smiled. “Hello?” She said picking up the phone. “Hey this is Tony, from school.” “OH Hi haven’t talked to you in forever.” “Yeah I know, hey listen, I’ll be practicing for a tournament downtown on Monday, would you want to go?” “Um yeah sure ok sounds like fun.” She replied. “See you then.” “Ok good. Bye.” He said. She called Kit and told her all about it. Kit never got to talk to the boys anymore, because she had moved to another school. * * * “No way she actually said she would?” Stu asked kind of angrily. “Yeah.” Tony laughed. “W-well that’s cool then.” Stu stammered. “Yeah” Tony said. Then they headed out for some food. Tacos of course. Stu never truly let on but it bothered him that it was so easy for Tony to get Kat to go with him anywhere. Stu had tried so many times but he never thought she would so he never truly asked her on a date or anything. But now that Tony would be with her all day Monday, it bugged the hell out of him. But of course. He wouldn’t let that stop him from one day getting her to date him. * * * The next few weeks were great for Kat. Tony and her started dated. Stu acted like he was alright with it. He even turned to liking Kit. But Kit was still with Chris. Though she was thinking seriously of breaking it off with him. Kat spent the night at Tony’s bout they weren’t have a sexual relationship at the time. And that night, she decided it was time to let someone else know about Locke. So she told him everything. It finally made sense to him. This is the reason she acted so cold towards Stu. Well Kat felt a lot better spilling everything to him. And the next day she told it all to Stu. She and Stu became good friends. She told him everything. Even about the affair she had had With Mr. Harry Richardson her 8th grade teacher, last summer. Stu and Kat were truly becoming like Brother and Sister. Except Kat was constantly leading him on. Which was what would get her |
