URBAN PROGRAMMES/PROJECTS OF FODRA IN DELHI
A. SELF HELP GROUP DEVELOPMENT/MICROCREDIT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
This project was first started in 1997 among the poor women of Pratap Nagar with the purpose of inculcating monthly thrift habits, meeting the immediate credit need of needy members, channeling credit from the formal sources for starting their micro businesses. The groups have their group bank accounts with the local commercial banks jointly operated by the two/three elected representatives of the respective groups. The SHGs have already started inter-loaning to its needy members for the purposes like - illness, repaying high interest debts, repairing of houses, starting a petty businesses, etc..
CORDAID( earlier BILANCE), The Netherlands has been financing the project since October,1999 to promote 15-20 savings and credit self help groups among 250-300 poor migrant women in Pratap Nagar women by September 2001 to reduce exploitation and poverty by providing employment oriented skill training and entrepreneurial mentoring. The long-term impact of this project has been planned for socio-economic empowerment of the families through social mobilisation.
B. COMMUNITY BASED INCOME GENERATION PROJECT
FODRA had organised a soft toys making skill training cum entrepreneurship development program among 20 economically active women of the self-help groups in collaboration with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development(a national mainstream credit delivery institution for rural development in India) in August, 1998. After the completion of the skill programme, FODRA has been supporting these trained women through a community soft-toys making and marketing initiative managed by the women of the community(Pratap Nagar). The interested women come the production centre to produce soft-toys and FODRA has been helping them in marketing their products. FODRA is also escorting the producer group in ensuring product quality, business credit and marketing of products produced by the women. India Development Service(IDS), USA has recently approved to finance this initiative from March, 2000 onwards for improving product quality and existing market linkage to make the project gradually
C. FAMILY HEALTH TRAINING AND SUPPORT
FODRA has established a Community Family Health Support programme in partnership with Later-Day Saint Charities(LDSC), Uttah, USA to create awareness and sensitise the families of Pratap Nagar on basic hygiene and sanitation to remain free from basic health problems. Under this project, One MBBS and MD lady doctor visits the Health Support Centre/Clinic once in every week to undertake medical check-up of women and children, provide medical guidance and remedial measures. The centre has been equipped with basic medical check-up equipment, provides basic medication to the patients and refers the cases for further diagnosis and check-ups to government hospital under referral programme. Two adolescent girls from the community are attached to the centre as community health workers to learn from the visiting doctors and sensitise the families during other week days through house visits and by organising community sensitisation camps.
D. EDUCATION SUPPORT PROJECT FOR POOR CHILDREN
The scope of the project is to provide both remedial and non-formal education facilities to the needy children in project area. The main difference between remedial and non-formal education is that remedial education is for improving the education standard of school going children, whereas non-formal education is meant for unschooled children and school drop-outs in age group of 8-14 years to give them basic education and prepare them for getting admission to formal education through a special test conducted by government schools in Delhi.
ASHA for Education-Princeton chapter, USA has been funding for running one school support(remedial) education centre and one non-formal education centre in the project area to provide education support for 50 school going children and 50 non-school going and school drop-outs children.
E. PRE-EDUCATION
The project aims to improve the school enrollment rate among children of Pratap Nagar through pre-education project. The project will prepare the children in the age group of 3-5 years to recognise colors, articles, animals and birds through toys in addition improving the logic/mental power of these children through educational games. This will also prepare the children to read and write simple words and numbers. AID, Maryland Chapter has been supporting this project.
F. SOFT TOYS REPLICATION PROJECT
The purpose of the project is develop soft-toys making skills among the poor women in Jamuna Pusta slums and entrepreneurial mentoring for starting hand-made soft toy micro enterprises. FODRA is implementing this replication project in partnership Latter Day Saint Charities and collaboration with Delhi Police. |
