HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE FIBROMYALGIA?
Current estimates are that roughly 5-8 million people in the United States alone are
afflicted with Fibromyalgia, but that has probably changed since I last updated this page.
Given the difficulty in getting an accurate diagnosis, and the variability of doctors'
education relating to these syndromes, these figures may or may not be accurate.
Marilyn Kerr, RN, has done a pretty impressive survey of
Fibromyalgia patients. You can check out her results HERE.
I "publish" an online Fibromyalgia newsletter, called FM'ily Times, once a month. When
people sign up to receive the newsletter, they are able to input some information about
themselves on the sign-up form. I recently went in to look at all that and found:
1. All but one are women (roughly 160:1), and
2. The majority are in their 40's.
I wish there was some way to "poll" my readers more specifically; maybe I'll
figure out how to do that sometime! |
