What I've had my most luck with are Rattle traps. I cast them as far as I can, then wind as fast as I can. Not much to it. I have caught Northerns on other lures such as: spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, spinners, and Banjo Minnows( yes they even work as advertised). The colors that I lean towards are: Firetiger(my favorite), black, chartruse, and glow green. I always use a steel leader when fishing for these toothy critters. I've lost too many lures in the past, and still will loose more. The Northens tend to like a fast retrieve, except for the Banjo, and this I imitate an injured minnow with short yanks and letting it fall. Look out for a strike all the way to the boat. I've had fish hit the side of the boat before with their mouths wide open.
