CHILD SAFETY AT SCHOOL:
Your child probably spends a considerable amount of time at school. It's important that school safety education is also taught to your child.
If your child walks to and from school each day, it's extremely important that you, the parent, know the route that your child takes. Your child should NOT change their usual route without your knowledge.
Your child MUST know that no one is allowed to ever pick them up from school without "properly" identifying themselves. In case of an emergency where a parent or guardian has DIRECTED another person to go pick them up, the child should ask them for THE SPECIAL CODE.
A child should learn to be observant while at school. If your child should see a stranger at school that doesn't belong, they should bring this fact to the attention of a PERSON IN AUTHORITY.
For example, if your child is in elementary school, it should seem "odd" to the child if a person sixteen or seventeen years old is hanging around the schoolyard. It's possible that this individual is the son or daughter of one of the teachers or officials at the school. Equally important, it is also possible that this person doesn't belong on the school grounds in the first place. By taking a PROACTIVE approach to the situation, your child might just be able to keep a problem from happening.
While at school, it is a good idea that your child NOT be alone in a classroom with a teacher. It is best to have them bring a friend along if they need to speak with the teacher, or if the teacher wants to see them, such as after school or during a scheduled break.
Some schools require their students to wear uniforms. Other schools do not. As a parent, be aware of the type of clothing your child is wearing to school. Be careful of such items as jackets with professional sports insignias and other items that are used as gang identifications. If your child should discover that a classmate has brought a weapon to school, this should also be brought to the attention of a PERSON IN AUTHORITY.
