Tibetan Protesters Said Fired Upon
BEIJING (AP) - Chinese police fired on Tibetan protesters demanding the release of three monks arrested on suspicion of having contacts with the Dalai Lama's
exiled government, a human rights group reported Thursday.
The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy, which has links to the Dalai Lama, said the number of casualties was not known. The group said it was
unclear how many shots police fired.
About 3,000 Tibetans staged the Oct. 31 protest in Garze, a town in a Tibetan-inhabited region of the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, the human rights
group said.
They were demanding the release of three monks - Geshe Sonam Phuntsok, Sonam and Agya Tsering - who were arrested two weeks ago.
At least 10 Tibetans were arrested after the Oct. 31 rally, the group said.
The Dalai Lama set up his government-in-exile after fleeing Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against the Chinese, who took over Tibet in 1950.
The Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy is based in Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama lives.
