Best QuarterBacks
Best QuarterBacks of Yesteryears
Best Quarterbacks Today

Were these quarterback's great or what?

Quarterbacks Best of Yesteryears

1.Johnny Unitas
Sure, he looked silly in those high-top shoes. And you're tired
of hearing how he called his own plays. But when this fellow
started operating on a defense, it was all over. Cornerbacks
who had to face him woke up at night bathed in a cold sweat.
All that, and he was nails tough in the face of a pass rush
when quarterbacks still were considered fair game.
2.Joe Montana
He never met a Super Bowl he couldn't win or a clock he couldn't
beat. He looked like the picture of innocence -- floppy hair,
rounded shoulders, modest frame -- but deep inside lurked the
heart of an assassin. Ice water flowed in his veins. Scouts
worried that his arm was too weak, and trainers worried for his
health. Montana never worried about anything, which drove defenses
berserk.
3.Otto Graham
If the Jeopardy answer is Otto Graham, the question must be: What
do you get if you take a bright athlete with an accurate arm and
introduce him to Paul Brown? What you get is the nearly perfect
technician for one of pro football's most revered teams, the early
Cleveland Browns. Ask the seven teams he beat in title games.
4.Dan Marino
Don Shula, the NFL's winningest coach, believed in the running game
until this guy came along. Marino not only had the fastest release
since the Sundance Kid, he had every pass in the owner's manual.
Ins, outs, slants, goes, screens, fades, you name it. When he retired,
nobody could find the NFL record book because he took it with him.
5.Sammy Baugh
The story of man began with Adam. The NFL passing game began with
Baugh, pro football's first great aerialist. Old film clips show him
slinging spirals through swaying tire swings. That was child's play
for a guy accustomed to playing defense when he didn't have the ball.
He handled punting chores, took snaps without a facemask, dodged angry
defenders, and pinpointed receivers.
6.Steve Young
He could have been a running back if he hadn't been so gifted as a
passer, so it was almost unfair that Young also owned one of the most
accurate arms in the history of the game. The only hurdle that gave
him any difficulty was succeeding Joe Montana, but a victory in Super
Bowl XXIX put even that challenge to rest.
7.Roger Staubach
When the drafted Staubach, they got themselves a one-man wrecking
crew who was equally happy to scramble or pass a defense to distraction.
He bought time by eluding pass rushers, ad-libbed running plays from a
dropback position, and riddled suspect secondaries with heat-seeking
missiles. Best of all, he did it in the clutch, habitually rescuing
victories from defeats.
8.John Elway
Other quarterbacks had rifles. Elway had a bazooka, which he happily
fired through the tiniest of openings. Unless, that is, he opted to
run, which he did with all the finesse of a runaway train. No
quarterback was more driven. For those who have forgotten, please
insert your videotape of Super Bowl XXXII. Fast forward to the third
quarter, the Broncos facing third-and-six, and watch his eyes as he
catapults into history.
9.Fran Tarkenton
Now he's here, now he's not. He runs to the right, he turns to the
left, he circles, he doubles back. Tarkenton was the incarnation of
a defensive lineman's trip to hell. And in spite of all these waterbug
antics, in spite of a body barely big enough to peer over center,
the will-o'-the-wisp quarterback finished his career with more passing
yards than any who preceded him in the NFL.
10.Sid Luckman
It would be enough to say that Luckman was George Halas's favorite
player, that he spoke of him as a son, that he credited the long-time
quarterback for bringing him the greatest joy he had ever known. But
if you really want to know just how devastating Luckman could be,
check out the score of the 1940 title game: 73-0. Luckman's team
had the 73.

Quarterbacks: Best of Today

1.Brett Favre
In the last two years, Favre has played piled up nearly 8,000
passing yards. He has the ability to make something from nothing that
strikes fear in the hearts of defensive coordinators.
2.Kurt Warner
He is so accurate. Fearless and what makes Rams receivers so happy
is his knack for spreading the ball around to his teammates.
3.Peyton Manning
He is the NFL's master technician, and no one knows the playbook
better. His NFL-best 4,413 passing yards last season was his second
season eclipsing the 4,000-yard mark.
4.Donovan McNabb
He was responsible for Eagles's arrival as a playoff team and
possesses a strong arm.
5.Daunte Culpepper
He passed for 33 touchdowns and rans for 7 more last year. At 6
feet 4 inches and 266 pounds, he is a formidable force at a position.
6.Brian Griese
Last year, he was the NFL's leading passer (102.9 rating). At 6 feet,
3 inches and 215 pounds, he knows how to move an offense down the field.
7.Rich Gannon
His passer rating last year 92.4 and he had 28 passing, 4 rushing
touchdowns. He make the Pro Bowl for a second year.
8.Jeff Garcia
Last year, he led the NFC in passing yardage. and he gets the most out
of his 6-foot 1-inch frame.
9.Drew Bledsoe
He had to direct an offense without a running game last year but when
given time to set up, he had the arm for 7,000 passing yards since
1999 in a one-dimensional offense.
10.Elvis Grbac
In only two years as a full-time starter in Kansas City, he passed for
50 touchdowns.
