Dart Board set up:
Height 5 feet 8 inches - center of Bull to Floor
Toe Line 7 feet Nine 1-4 inches- Distance from

(The official throwing distance, for most countries,
is 2.37 meters, as measured along the floor, from the
plane of the face of the dart board. In feet, this is
7 ft 9 1/4 in. The height of the board, to the center
of the bull is 173 centimeters or 5 ft. 8 in.)
League Play
Dart leagues are similar to bowling or softball leagues.
There are many variation, but the following is a general
overview that applies to most leagues.
The local Pub or Bar has dart leagues. Players (usually 6-8)
form a team and join a local league. League's usually play
one night a week for the season which can run from 8-40 weeks.
During the season each team normally plays each other several
time. In most areas players must join a Dart Association and
play annual dues each year. In some areas dues are life-time
and each season darters pay a shooter fee.
The association provides patchs, pins, awards and Championship
Games. Most Bar's pay the Team fees to the Association and
dart players only pay membership and shooter fees. Some leagues
are home or house leagues and some are home and away leagues.
The teams usually play 301, Cricket , Cork Calls and the
team game. The team game is usually 501 or 701. 3 sets of
2 shooter play 301, Cricket, and cork calls. A set of 3
players from each team play the team game with winner getting
3 pts. Possible maximun score is 30 points in match.
Accumulated weekly score determines position placements.
The 3 m's of dart playing:
1. Mechanical---this is the mechanics of shooting darts. How
and when to stand. How to hold the dart and how to shoot or
throw it. Consistency in the mechanics makes a better darter.
2. Mathematics---math comes in - in knowing how to take a
game out. Some bars have out charts but there is none at
tournaments and championship games. Knowing your math
helps you take out the game or set it up so your partner can
do it. You need to be able to count how many points you have
so you know what you need to hit. All games except Cricket
require a double out shot.
3. Mental---your mental attitude can win matches for you.
You need your head in the game to go along with the math and
mechanics.
The Games:
Cricket: In cricket you need to close the 20's, 19's 18's
17's 16's 15's and Bull's before your oponent does. To close
you need 3 of each. If your oponents numbers are open and you
hit the number again you get those points. So to win you must
be ahead on points and have all numbers closed.
301: The 301 game is different from other 01 games in that
you must double in and double out. That means your score does
not count until you get a double with the first dart. This is
a short game which is why the double in. First team to get
the 301 to 0 wins.
401, 501, 701: These games do not require a double in shot
but still require a double out to win. First team to get to
0 wins.
The Match
In playing a match, whether in a league,at a tournament or
the Championship. Example of a match
Team 1 plays team 2- first set is 301 worth 9 points/
Players ab vs players ab play 3 games of 301 with
winner getting 1 point. If game taken in 2 Straight
winner gets the 3 points.
Players cd vs players cd 3 games of 301 scoring same
Player ef vs players ef 3 games of 301 scoring same
Teams moves on to Cricket--play same as above.
Teams move on to Cork calls--play same as above.
Final game worth 3 point to winner is the team game
Player a,b,c, vs players a,b,c,
Players d,e,f, vs players d,e,f.
Total points any team can win is 33. Each team gets
what ever points they score and highest score wins.
(abc's used to demonstrate. Captain has option to
pair players as he/she chooses)
In league play you play the entire match. In the
championships first team to reach 17 wins the match.
(some leagues use 13 pts matchs which means the
team that wins gets 1 point for winning, loser 0)
Outs: In 01 games the out shot really comes in play. The
earliest possible number you can take out with 3 darts is
170 but well beyond my capabilities. It would be Triple 20,
Triple 20. double Bull. (60+60+50) Where you get in out
territory and have an odd number your first shot shot would
make that number even so you have 2 shots at the out. Always
try to leave your partner with an out shot, that may be your
last shot at the out before losing.
A look at some out shots. Remember the math and after each
dart see what you have left and adjust the shot if need be.
