Words to Know
ADSL: This is a new internet connection system that uses the phone lines that are already in your home and can provide much faster speeds of connection. Unfortunately, this new program does not work everywhere yet.
Bookmark: This is what it sounds like: a placeholder for the internet. You can use bookmarks to go quickly to a favorite web page without having to type the web address (note: the easiest way of doing this is to press cntrl+D on any netscape browser, or clicking on the the paper heart in the upper right hand corner of the page on AOL.)
Call Waiting: People who only have one phoneline use this feature so that when they're on the phone they will know if someone else is trying to call them. This feature does not work with computers, and should be turned off before getting online.
Connect: This meas to call up the internet. When two or more computers are on the Internet together at the same time, they are connected.
Dial-Up: This is a part of windows that lets your computer dial-up the internet.
Download: This is a feature that allows you to take a file or program from the internet. When you check your email, you're downloading it to your computer.
E-Commerce: Buying things over the internet.
E-mail: This is like regular mail that you can send to friends and businesses, but its electronic, hence the 'e'. Email can be sent to anyone with an email address. Usually the mail gets to the recipient within a few minutes, and the best thing: Email is free!
Hyperlink: This is a link on a web page that will take you to another webpage.
Internet: This is the name used to describe all the computers in the world that are hooked up into one big network.
ISDN: This is a special kind of phone line that you need to have a phone company bring into your home. Its more expensive than regular phone lines but allows faster internet connection.
ISP: Internet Service Provider.
Link: Another name for a hyperlink. This is a special feature that when clicked on by a mouse will take you to another webpage.
Login: To access the internet you must have an account. When you access your account and connect to the internet, you are logged in.
Modem: This is the part of your computer that the phone line plugs into.
Protocol: A computer language that your computer uses to talk with other computers on the Internet. If your computer doesnt have the proper protocol setup, it wont work on the internet. Similarly, if you speak only English but want to talk to someone who speaks only French, you cant do it easily becuase you both use different languages.
TCP/IP: This is the protocol of the internet.
URL: Universal Resource Link; an internet address. You type a URL into a browser in order to get to a web page.
Username: This is the name that your ISP gives you so you can access the internet.
Spam: That annoying bulk mail you will recieve from various sources; mostly advertises for something you would never be interested in. Luckily most email programs are set up so you can block addresses or have a seperate folder that recieves all spam to be deleted easily.
