TYPO DEMON

“Matrix, will ya’ tell me about the typo demon again?”

Matrix set down his energy shake on the diner table and met Enzo’s hopeful
gaze with a glare. “Haven’t you heard it sixty times before?”

“I wanna hear it again.”

Matrix shook his head. “Pest,” he murmured under his breath.

AndrAIa, sitting next to Matrix, smiled, but Enzo’s lower lip started to
tremble. “If Bob was here, he’d tell me a story.”

“But he’s not here, so I guess you don’t get a story.”

“You’re mean,” Enzo whined. “I want Bob here so he can play with me because
you won’t. When is he gonna get back from the Super Computer? I bet
there’s lots of good stories about the Super Computer..” He continued with
his rant.

AndrAIa leaned over to Matrix. “You better do something before he crashes.”

Matrix rolled his eye. AndrAIa frowned and smacked his shoulder. “Come
one. He’s just a kid. User, you can be quite good with little sprites when
you set out to be. Remember Backup?”

“I’m not good with them! I despise them.”

“Oh, you don’t really mean that!” AndrAIa insisted. “Besides, this could be
good practice for you.” She smiled seductively. “For your own little
sprites someday.”

Instantly Matrix turned to Enzo. “All right, I’ll tell you the story one
more time. Just shut up.”

Enzo grinned and immediately quieted down.

“The typo demon,” Matrix began. “Is a version of web creature. The only
difference is that the typo demon is also associated with sprites and
viruses. It roams throughout the web and systems- it doesn’t care which-
seeking victims.”

“Can’t the Guardians just find and delete them?” Enzo interrupted. He had
this rehearsed.

Matrix shook his head. “Nope. You see, the typo demon doesn’t look like a
web creature. It looks just like you or me. You can’t tell who is a typo
demon. It goes around, destroying what it can. When the typo demon finds a
victim, such as an annoying little sprite, it bites him.” He chomped the
air with his jaws, causing Enzo to jump. “Then the annoying little sprite
victim also becomes a typo demon.”

Enzo’s eyes were wide. “Alphanumeric,” he breathed. “Have you guys ever
met a typo demon?”

“Sure have,” said AndrAIa. “Sparky here is one. Except he doesn’t put on
much of a disguise.”

Matrix winked at AndrAIa. “Don’t worry, kid. Typo demons aren’t real.
They’re just part of some legend I heard in some other system a few cycles
back.”

Enzo didn’t seem to be listening. “I wonder if one will ever come to
Mainframe.”

“Oh, User, you aren’t telling Enzo typo demon stories again, are you?” Dot
walked into the diner at that moment, Mouse behind her. “He’ll have
nightmares for minutes!”

“We told him they weren’t real!” Matrix defended.

Mouse laughed. “Don’t worry, Dot. Enzo’s old enough to know what’s fake.”
She glanced at him. “At least, I hope.”

Dot bit her lip. “Well...” she began, dubious. “Okay. But if he has more
nightmares, no more stories.”

AndrAIa opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted.

“WARNING: INCOMING GAME.”

Enzo’s eyes lit up. “A game! Let’s go! I’ll race you there!” He bounded
out the diner door.

“Enzo! Wait!” cried Dot, chasing after him.

Matrix watched them leave. “I really don’t like little sprites.”
