The final stop on the voyage leading to Unforgiven is the picturesque Pyramid in Memphis, Tennessee. The WWF has had a rough going over the past month in regards to a lack of time to develop the storylines and the angles for the PPV. Nevertheless, time has basically run out so Im expecting a breakneck paced broadcast tonight to tie up all loose ends and try to pump all possible energy into all contests booked for Sunday night. SmackDown tonight does come from the domicile of one Elvis Aaron Presley
but another King has been making the headlines this week backstage. Tazz joins Michael Cole at ringside for the call, lets get right to it, shall we?
Immediately out of the gate storms the WWF Champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin, quite perturbed at his loss this past Monday night in a tag match to Kurt Angle
his worthy opponent this coming Sunday night. Ragin Redneck is his shirt for the evening, and Austin certainly fits that bill tonight as he immediately says he will not be disrespected by 15,000 jackasses. This belt is mine, its all mine! This Sunday is Unforgiven and it is a damn good name for the PPV event because there is one single sorry ass punk that I will never forgive and his name happens to be Kurt Angle. You got to put yourself in my shoes, which you could never do because Im the greatest superstar to ever step foot in this ring. Angle has made Austins life a living hell, humiliating and embarrassing the Rattlesnake
I aint gonna put up with that crap tonight. Angle made Austin beg, cry, last Monday night he pinned Stone Colds shoulders to the mat and thats something that will never ever happen again
thank you very much
what? Stone Cold is going to make an example out of you in your hometown, what, I said Im going to make an example out of you. This belt has been built to rest on the shoulder of Stone Cold Steve Austin, what? So whats going to happen Kurt when your stupid little family buys their tickets to sit in the first row. Im going to whip your ass in this ring and your little brothers are going to beg and cry to stop beating your ass. I aint going to wait until this Sunday to address my problems, because if Austin has a problem, he looks that person right in the eye and he settles that problem
because I am the leader of the Alliance, what? I got one person to call out to this ring
Torrie Wilson get your ragged carcass out here! Torrie Wilson, I know youre back there, get out here to Stone Cold Steve Austins ring. Everybodys scared of Austin, I can understand that, all you people are scared
look at you, I see the fear in your eyes, youre scared of me arent you. Torrie Wilson get out here.
Out she comes, slowly and somewhat timidly, but the jeans certainly arent timidly hanging onto the promised land that is the body of the blonde bombshell. (Huge pop for her by the way.) Get over here
come on, look at you, look at you, are you proud of yourself? What kind of a woman are you, Torrie, huh, youre pathetic. (she began to cry and didnt stop until the entire segment was over
I bought it, not bad acting at all). Look at you, you dont deserve to be in the same ring with Stone Cold Steve Austin. You dont deserve to breathe the same air as Stone Cold Steve Austin. Arent you supposed to be in the Alliance, then what are you hanging out with Tyjiri for
you got something to say
shut up. Look at you, the way youre dressed, is that supposed to be sexy? I say no, I say its trash, I say youre trash, Im spitting on you, does that bother you, huh? Read my lips Torrie, you make me sick. Oh youre sorry, you want me to stop, oh itd be nice if I stopped wouldnt it, huh huh, beg me to stop
shut up I cant stand it when a person begs. Cry for me to stop it, I cant stand to see someone cry, it makes me sick. Waahh wahhh wahhh, ah ahahh wahhh , wahahh, oh its so pathetic isnt it. Stand right here in the center of this ring, come here, how stupid are you
Im going to give you something you aint never going to forget. Out runs Tajiri going all out for Austin but getting dumped to the outside and brutalized by the Bionic Redneck. The Buzzsaw bounced off the ring post twice as Torrie watched in horror on the inside. Austin came right back in to speak with her, so thats what this is, this was a setup? You tried to set me up didnt you. You wanted your little boyfriend to come down here and save you, didnt you? Hes going to stop Stone Cold Steve Austin? Stand up, stand up winch. Aint nobody back there
Kurt Angle runs down and the fistfight is on outside the ring. Angle wins it and Austin is retreating around the ring. Kurt begins stomping Austin as Tazz leaves the announce position and attempts the Tazzmission on the outside
Angle Slam on the floor. Stone Cold nails Angle, bounces him off the ring post repeatedly, but is not done. Austin with a chair to the back not once, but twice. Stone Cold is still not finished. He preps for and actually EXECUTES a piledriver on the exposed concrete floor after Kurt attempted to fight out of it and took a horrifying shot to the back with the chair. Jim Ross ran out, looking at Kurt Angle with some other backstage personnel, including William Regal and Sergeant Slaughter. Austin stood by and looked at Angle as the stretcher was brought out, the personnel asked him to leave, saying he had done enough. Angle was barely moving, I heard him say I cant move my arms guys. Ross begged for them to be careful with Kurt, and the show cut to commercial.
After the break, Kurt Angle was put on the stretcher and I overheard him say that he couldnt feel anything. Everyone around him was telling him that he would be okay (this is such a work, the microphone work made it so without a doubt.) He was basically in tears and the fans came to their feet when the stretcher began to move. They slowly rolled it next to the ramp, not trying to push it up the steel. Faarooq and Bradshaw came out as well, walking Kurt back
they walked past the Hardy Boyz and Lita who also helped move the stretcher once it got to the back. Chris Jericho was also part of it, saying careful careful, stick in there Kurt! (In a wonderful WWF selljob, the footage rolled once again but no one commentated over it
looked like Flair and Funk in 1989, extremely impressive). The ambulance pulled away as the wrestlers, JR, Sarge, and everyone else watched in horror
second commercial break.
Jim Ross and Michael Cole do the sell after the break, acting as if Angle just died
extremely well done. Ross said that he wants to believe that Austin didnt mean to go as far as he did. Angle is at a local medical facility and will keep us all in the know.
MATCH 1: HURRICANE & LANCE STORM (W/ Ivory) VS. BIG SHOW & SPIKE DUDLEY (W/ Molly Holly)
The superhero and the bumping machine kicked it off as Helms was in charge and tagged in to Lance Storm. Spike hit a beautiful hurracanranna off the top and tagged in the Big Show. Hurricane attempted to use his strength to overpower the Show
nope. Ivory got on the apron and then Molly did, Storm was run into the women and Helms caught Molly off the apron and gave her a thumbs up
she stared at him innocently. Hurricane wanted a choke slam on the Show but didnt get it shockingly, Storm and Show went at it on the outside as interference from Ivory allowed time for the Eye of the Hurricane and the three count. Molly had enough, she went at it with Ivory on the floor as the Dudley Boyz ran out and nailed the Big Show with both WWF Tag Championship belts. Spike was heaved to the floor as D-Von set up the table on the inside, 3D for the Show
no double choke slam
no double suplex put the Show through the wood.
RATING: 7, Solid opener, good pacing and a much hotter crowd than Monday nights.
TOP SPOT: Ill say the double suplex just because you dont see the Show go through a table all that often.
CROWD INVOLVEMENT: 9, Good heat for Lance and Hurricane, great pops for Spike, Show, and Molly (especially for her coming out of my place).
POTENTIAL OUTCOME: Cane and Storm, Spike and Show, Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz in a four way at Unforgiven
announced before the match began by MC and JR
what a buildup. Dudleyz should hang on unless they plan to put gold back on Matt and Jeff. (By the way, earlier in my column this afternoon I stated that Matt would then go on to lose the Euro strap if he did in fact win tag gold
ouch, Hurricane is the champ, please forgive me Shane!)
WINNERS: HURRICANE AND LANCE STORM
The Alliance in mass is talking in the back as Austin comes in to find that his own people are disgusted at what he just did to Kurt Angle. Stone Cold wants to make sure that they are clear on the direction that the Alliance is taking
do you understand what I just said? They saw what just happened, what are you guys all sad about, youre either with me or against me
you think I piledrived Angle for my own good because Im afraid of him? No, I saw him as a threat to the Alliance, so in my eyes it wasnt strong enough because Im trying to protect you. Austin will stand up and fight for everyone in that room. Dreamer has a question, and Austin tells him that Tyjiri stuck his nose in Alliance business so hes going to get beaten down tonight. Thats something you just dont do (the Alliance gets behind him), what what, youre damn right!
BURN OF THE WEEK: Kronik puts Kane through a table on Raw and the Dudleyz then go on to win the WWF Tag Team Championships.
MATCH 2: KRONIK (W/ Steven Richards) VS. KAIENTAI
Ouch ouch ouch
I love both teams here but I have a hankering as to who will win it, should be interesting
from a Kronik offensive standpoint. Adams and Taka hooked it up to start, with Brian hitting first his spinning high DDT and then a full nelson slam. Clarke got the tag and continued to brutalize Taka with kicks and vicious chops. Taka took a boot push into his partner and Funaki came in throwing right hands
but was floored with a caught wheelbarrow into a choke slam. Clarke caught Funaki off the ropes but Taka hit a dropkick off the top, leading to a one count. Taka took a tilt a whirl backbreaker on the floor from Adams as Funaki took the Meltdown. The High Time was next for Funaki
Taka got a double shoulder block and then a High Time of his own
1, 2, 3.
RATING: 7, Hard to rate it, it wasnt a match, but I flat out love the exhibition of moves that Adams and Clarke utilize, so just seeing those moves executed and sold got the job done for me. Ill bet anyone who didnt know about them before now understands how formidable they are as a tag team.
TOP SPOT: Ill say Clarke catching Funakis wheelbarrow attempt and turning it into a shove off choke slam but plenty of spots hit the mark in this one.
CROWD INVOLVEMENT: 8, They were into it, watching those moves is just impossible not to like.
POTENTIAL OUTCOME: A battle of the big men on Sunday, Ill be cheering for the Bryans to set up an inevitable feud with the Acolytes.
WINNERS: KRONIK
Austin runs into Regals office, saying he wants Tajiri tonight
Regal shoves him and says that the Buzzsaw would love to tear the bloody life out of him
so would William if he wants it that way. Stone Cold says he has no problem with Regal, he wants the karate SOB. You got him, but its going to be for the WWF Championship right here tonight. Austin leaves and had a look of fear in his face.
MATCH 3: ROB VAN DAM VS. RAVEN (W/ Terri) (WWF Hardcore Championship)
Jericho came out for commentary
but RVD got a bigger pop than Y2J
wow, great to see for Rob, a true show stopper. Raven attacked RVD during his entrance, didnt even waste time having theme music tonight. He scored with a side Russian leg sweep on the ramp and then his traditional clothesline and bulldog. Van Dam came back with a step through heel trip and then the cartwheel moonsault and a spin kick. Raven hit a drop toe hold that put Rob neck first into the second rope. RVD locked on a cobra clutch but the crowd got behind Van Dam as he was fading. He came back, fighting with right hands and a combination of kicks, finishing with a severe jumping double calf kick. The rolling somersault senton was next, only a two count and Raven bailed to the outside. Rob went out after him, scoring with the corkscrew leg drop and driving Raven off the barricade and down to the floor. Van Dam played to the crowd and Raven played his face with a trash can lid. Raven hit his trademark drop toe hold onto a steel chair and got a two count
but the Van Daminator then found the mark. Van Dam rolled over for the cover but Terri distracted Teddy Long. Van Dam came over to break that up, sidestepped Ravens charge, hit another corkscrew leg drop and then nailed the Five Star Frog Splash
HUGE HUGE HUGE pop
1, 2, 3. After RVD had left, out ran Saturn with a vile choke
Terri came in and Saturn caught her, but Raven nailed him from behind and dropped him with the Raven Effect.
RATING: 8, I cant give RVD matches low scores, just awesome to watch and the fans ate it up.
TOP SPOT: Five Star Frog Splash was beautiful.
CROWD INVOLVEMENT: 10, RVD, RVD, RVD, RVD, RVD
more over than Y2J on this occasion!
POTENTIAL OUTCOME: RVD and Y2J put on one for the ages this coming Sunday. A match I have long long long awaited, since 98 when Jericho really became a star. It might be worth 30 bucks by itself
especially if Jericho is on, about which I have faith he will.
WINNER: ROB VAN DAM
SMACK OF THE NIGHT: Edge saving Tajiri from the one man ConChairTo on Raw.
MATCH 4: EDGE VS. KANYON (WWF Intercontinental Championship)
Edge has new theme music, its off of White Zombies new record
a pretty decent song and good intro music, still beginning with You Think You Know Me. Okay it is widely known how biased I am in favor of Chris Kanyon, I think hes one of the best to ever lace up the boots
but Ill tell you something, Edge is truly becoming a star. His workrate is phenomenal and he has a knowledge of the business without any doubt. Edge went to work early, taking the fight to the outside and destroying Kanyon on the floor. Once it moved back inside, a high pancake gave Edge a chance to hit rights from a mounted position and face jams into the canvas. A Kanyon chant began from a few fans
pleasing to see. Kanyon hit a nice variation of a pull through powerbomb and then threw some major telegraphed right hands. Edge attempted to fight back, scoring with a spinning heel kick and then two post jobs on the shoulder. Edge was in control after a reverse crossbody and a vicious shove into the turnbuckle (that looked a little odd). Jim Korderas got an inadvertent shot in the nose and out ran Christian
but he speared Kanyon instead and after the Buzzkiller, Edge was the victor.
RATING: 8, Extremely good match here, I would have liked to see Kanyon get a little more offense in but still a well executed match that put Edge over as a major face going into the PPV.
TOP SPOT: The Buzzkiller or Kanyons powerbomb.
CROWD INVOLVEMENT: 9, Man is Edge beginning to get over huge, maybe he could be a memorable KOTR after all, I certainly am completely in favor of that happening.
POTENTIAL OUTCOME: Edge and Christian hook it up on Sunday, and put on one heck of a great technical wrestling match and probably a pretty good brawl as well. One thing they have done a good job of with this one is not giving anything away, a run in here with a few rights and thats about it.
WINNER: EDGE
The Hardy Boyz and Lita are talking about Kurt Angle as they walk towards the ring. (Note, Jim Ross told us during the break that reports have Angles arms and legs moving again with feeling to all extremities. It is being called a hairline fracture of the vertebrae, at least that is the preliminary diagnosis (work).)
The night before Unforgiven, we get Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson on WWF Excess, from 10 12 PM on TNN Saturday night
dont miss it, it could be worth our time.
MATCH 5: HARDY BOYZ (W/ Lita) VS. DUDLEY BOYZ
A match weve seen a trillion times but at least I cant get tired of it, great work between these teams, throw E&C in as well
any combo gets the job done. Matt and D-Von opened things up with the champs having the early brawl advantage. A tag to Jeff led to a successful Hardy tandem double team, garnering a two count from Nick Patrick. As Nick was distracted with Matt, Bubba pulled Jeff over the top with his air, Hardy cut a backflip as he flew to the outside the hard way. Bubba already brought out a table before tagging in and hitting a double pancake on the daredevil of the WWF. A high back body drop got the job done momentarily and D-Von tagged back in to capitalize. Off the second rope, D-Von missed a headbutt and Jeff needed the tag, finally making it after hitting an enziguri on the newly legal Bubba Ray Dudley. Matt hit a top rope clothesline on Bubba, then cleared D-Von to the floor
Poetry in Motion for Bubba Ray and then the neckbreaker lariat. The leg drop off the second rope led D-Von to pull Matt off the cover and to the outside as inside Bubba rolled out of the way of the Swanton Bomb. Lita came off the top rope and hit the Litacanranna on D-Von (she was selling a neck injury, Nick came to her aid, she looked like her head did graze the mat but she was holding her knee). D-Von looked for the Wazzzupp but Spike heaved him off the ropes after running out, leaving Matt to get the pin. Afterwards, Hurricane and Lance Storm caught Spike running up the ramp with a double superkick and Matt Hardy took the 3D through the furniture.
RATING: 8, Just as I suspected, solid match, nothing off the page but great work as always.
TOP SPOT: I love Matts neckbreaker lariat (ala Bret Hart) but I also enjoyed Bubba pulling Jeffs hair and body over the top rope backwards and to the floor.
CROWD INVOLVEMENT: 9, Hardy pops, Dudley heat, great finish.
POTENTIAL OUTCOME: Four way gets a lot of buildup in one show, but that aint enough. It will be a decent contest in the end though, a ton of talent in that ring.
WINNERS: HARDY BOYZ
Austin is talking to Debra about Tyjiri (guys not a typo all night long, just Austins pronunciation) as Rob Van Dam knocks and comes in, asking if hes heard the news. Its going to be bad news for you. Austin doesnt want to hear it
okay he does. Kurt Angle has checked himself out of the hospital and the rumor is that hes on his way to the arena. Austin says he hopes Kurt is wearing a seatbelt, thanks Van Dam (who leaves), turns to Debra and acts shocked, saying he cannot believe Angle is headed back.
MATCH 6: STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN VS. TAJIRI
I foresee something similar to the match we saw last month between Tajiri and Booker T, more or less a squash but hopefully the Rattlesnake will give the Buzzsaw a few good spots in this tuneup for the PPV. Right off the bat, Austin went for Tajiri and used his array of quick right hands and knee lifts to try and slow the U.S Champion down. Austin then heaved Tajiri through the ropes, then rammed his spine and rib area into the ring post and removed the bandages from the rib injury. Stone Cold continued the beating, hitting a low stomp and then a classic rib breaker. Austin dropped knees to the lower back
the rib area again, another rib breaker, the Stone Cold Stunner, and a three count. Austin after the bell picked Tajiri up in the ring and went for yet another piledriver
out came Kurt Angle in a neck brace and looking absolutely maniacal as he stood on the ramp. Quickly Austin got rid of Tajiri and began to stare Angle down cowardly. The crowd went nuts for this one.
RATING: 7, Man that was an assault, but Austin got the job done again as a top heel.
TOP SPOT: The rib breaker was beautiful, both of them.
CROWD INVOLVEMENT: 10, Just amazing heat for Stone Cold and a great pop for Tajiri, no words to describe Angles pop.
POTENTIAL OUTCOME: Austin and Angle go to Pittsburgh and make us all proud in yet another five star classic for the WWF Championship. Tajir |
