A Gundam is described as a large-humanoid fighter machine. It is a lot stronger than the average mobile suit. A Gundam is made of a special metal called Gundanium Alloy which is extremely strong and can only be manufactured in zero-gravity conditions-outer space.
The first Gundam was called Tallgeese( also known as the Leo prototype) and it was designed and built by some of the best scientists of the time. Shortly after the completion of the Tallgeese blueprint , five of these scientists disappeared. They were later to build Gundams and train pilots for them, using the Tallgeese designs as the basis for their work. In the absence of these men the Tallgeese was scaled down and modified to produce the first Leo mobile suits. The Leo prototype( Tallgeese) was relegated to a museum and forgotten about until Zechs Merquise was informed by a friend of it's existence and had it completed for his use in battle. To everyone's surprise it turns out to be more powerful than most of the mobile suits that are currently being used, but it's not exactly easy to pilot...
Twenty years after the Tallgeese blueprints were completed, the five scientists complete the training of their chosen pilots and dispatch them, with their Gundams, to earth on a mission to destroy Oz and avenge the assassination of the colony leader, Heero Yuy. Oz have never experienced this sort of mobile suit before and so have no idea how to fight them.They are amazed at the power the Gundams possess- they are almost indestructible...
