"Willie!" Barnabas called loudly as
he entered the Old House. Willie
Loomis ran into the drawing room.
His face expressed concern as he
responded, "You back already? What's
wrong?" He was then surprised to see
that Barnabas was smiling.
"It's beautiful! Why didn't you tell
me?"
"Tell you what?"
"About the lights, Willie.
Collinsport is glorious! What is
usually dark and depressing is now
so bright and joyous."
Willie shrugged, "I didn't think
about tellin' ya, Barnabas. I
figured you knew it was nearly
Christmas."
"The Christmas candles never were so
brilliant. I have not seen light so
lovely since I lost the privilege of
seeing the sun," Barnabas said in
delight mixed with sadness.
Willie wasn't used to seeing Barnabas
Collins so happy. He hated to bring
him down, however, he felt compelled
to ask, "Don't all that light make it
harder for you to.....uh...you know?"
The smile left Barnabas as he said,
"Go ahead Willie, say it."
Willie shook his head. "You know I
can't!"
Barnabas turned away. "It is true,"
the vampire said. "I was unable to
feed because everything was
lit up so well. Perhaps later
tonight."
There was a knock at the door and
Willie started for the door, but
Barnabas was closer and indicated
that he would answer. He removed his
caped coat and set aside hi cane
before placing his hand on the knob.
Joy again returned to his face,
though this time it was most visible
in his eyes as he looked upon the
face of Victoria Winters.
"Miss Winters! Please come in," he
insisted graciously.
"I'm so glad that you're here,
Barnabas!" Victoria said exuberantly.
"As am I," Barnabas smiled roguishly,
"I should not have liked to miss one
of your visits. Shall I take your
coat?"
"No, thank you. Actually, I was
hoping to stay in only a moment."
She grinned and cocked her head as
Barnabas looked perplexed. "Would
you consider going Christmas shopping
with me this evening?"
Quite charmingly he replied, "I'd be
delighted."
As Barnabas and Vicky left, enchanted
with each other's company, Willie
couldn't help but worry about what
this night would bring.
They walked the sidewalks of
Collinsport and shopped in the small
shops. Barnabas still marveled at
the colours and lights, all the
while, finding most of his pleasure
in being with Victoria.
She left him briefly to go to the
restroom in one of the stores.
Barnabas quickly purchased a small
porcelain doll which reminded him of
her. There wasn't time for gift
wrapping, but the sales clerk
cushioned the gift with white tissue
and placed it into a decorative bag.
Victoria returned just as Barnabas
hid the package in his coat.
The shops began to close so they
decided to go to The Blue Whale for a
drink. As Barnabas and Victoria made
their way to the car, he finally
asked the question that had been on
his mind all evening.
"Victoria, why did you invite me to
come with you tonight?"
She looked surprised and stopped
walking beside him. Stepping in
front of Barnabas and gazing sweetly
at his face she replied, " I thought
you knew by now, how much I enjoy
your company."
"Surely Carolyn would have been a
better companion," he responded
questioningly.
"Don't you even think for one minute
that you were a last resort, Barnabas
Collins!" Victoria scolded with a
smile.
He was surprised that she had read
him so well. Did she also know how
deep his feelings were for her?
"Victoria, I know that I should wait
until next week for this, but I'm
afraid that patience is not one of my
virtues."
Barnabas pulled out the package and
gave it to the lovely brunette. Upon
seeing the doll, she bounced with
delight.
"It looks like me! Oh Barnabas, I
love it--but you didn't need to buy
me a gift."
Victoria wrapped her arms around
Barnabas. Almost instantly, she
worried that the normally reserved
man might find such an impulsive show
of affection, inappropriate behaviour
for a lady. However, before she
could pull away, Barnabas had
encircled her with his own arms.
Her warmth seemed to reach into the
deepest part of him and her hair was
silky and fragrant against his face.
Barnabas could feel and hear
Victoria's heart beating against him
and his body began to respond to the
rhythm.
Just before the point of no return,
Barnabas happened to glance up.
Across the street was a large well
lit Nativity Scene.
Jerking away from Victoria, almost
violently, he said, "It is getting
quite late. Perhaps we should return
to Collinwood."
Stunned and confused by Barnabas'
behaviour, she nodded and got into
the driver's seat of the car. They
barely spoke on the way home and
Barnabas was polite, yet hasty in
saying goodnight.
Before going to sleep, Vicky set her
little doll on the night table. She
gazed at it as she pondered what had
transpired. Obviously, she'd been
too forward with Barnabas this
evening and had offended him. Vicky
berated herself for being so
impulsive.
Willie woke up near 1:30 am, but
thought he was still dreaming because
he was sure that he heard crying. He
got up, put on his robe and walked to
the drawing room.
Barnabas sat on the edge of his
favorite chair with his face in his
hands. The only light in the room
was coming from the fireplace.
Slowly, Willies's master lifted his
head.
"What is it, Willie?"
"I...I thought I heard cryin'."
Barnabas sighed. Standing up, he
whispered, "Eloi, Eloi, lama
sabachthani?"
"What was that, Barnabas?" Asked the
bewildered young man.
"That," Barnabas stressed the word,
"is from Psalm 22 and is what Jesus
said at his crucifixion. It means
'My God, My God, why have you
forsaken me?' I've lost it all,
Willie; my family, daylight, love and
my God, " he said mournfully.
Willie just stood silent for a few
moments. He'd never seen a spiritual
side to Barnabas and he knew
something was disturbing him deeply.
"Barnabas," Willie finally said
nervously, "you didn't do nothin' to
Miss Winter, did ya?"
Somberly, the vampire answered, "no
Willie......but I might have if not
for a sight that is tormenting my
soul."
"So you gonna forget about Vicky
now?" Willie asked hopefully.
Barnabas smiled, but it wasn't a
pleasant smile...it was the kind that
made Willie feel like his stomach was
full of rocks and his veins full of
ice water.
"I will never give up on Victoria.
When the time is right, she will be
mine.........forever.
Slightly over a week later, Vicky
attended Midnight Mass with the
Collins family. She prayed for all
those she loved and lit a candle--for
Barnabas Collins.
