A new ending (or beginning?) for FOREVER KNIGHT

(In case you are not aware; The final episode of FOREVER KNIGHT killed Nick's partner, Tracy, Nick & Natalie. I was extremely disappointed with that ending, so I created my own story for the last episode the series--without the need to completely ignore the one James Parriott produced.)

The force of the wood entering his back thrust Nick forward. His face was covered in beads of red as he opened his eyes and the pain in his chest subsided.

Nick Knight was surprised to find himself upon the satin sheets of his bed. He rubbed his chest where there should've been protruding wood with blood and remnants of his heart on it.

The realization came suddenly, though not without doubt, that what he'd just experienced was merely a nightmare. As the fog of sleep lifted, Nick got out of the bed and walked to the top of the stairs outside his room. With a quick jump, he landed downstairs and swiftly made his way to the refrigerator.

The green glass was cold as Nick's hand took hold of the wine bottle and he pulled the cork out with his teeth. He took a long gulp of the chilled bovine blood. Had Nick been mortal, the cold liquid would have given him a chill--however--a vampire's blood was thin and moved slowly; having the effect of lowering the body temperature. The body clad in black satin pajamas actually did begin to shiver though, as the mind recalled the details of the dream.

It was obvious to Nick what had inspired such a horrific creation as he closed the refrigerator door and carried his bottle to the sofa. He sat down and soon got the far away look in his eyes that often accompanied memories..........

The past few days had been some of the most traumatic he could recall. It all began with his partner, Tracy being shot by a crazed postal worker. Unlike in his nightmare, she had survived, though the first twenty-four hours had been touch-and-go. Tracy had gone to mail a package and ended up in the middle of the fray. Of course, her cop instincts wouldn't let her just stand by helplessly while the disgruntled employee put the lives of innocents in danger. However, after hearing the details of how she had handled the situation--Nick could not help but feel responsible for what happened. As a rookie detective, Tracy had watched and learned from her partner's behaviour--only she wasn't immortal and Nick knew damn well he'd taken risks that would have gotten him killed by now had he not been.

*****************

Just after hearing that Tracy would live, Nick called Natalie to tell her the good news. He was distressed to find sobbing on her end of the phone line. She proceeded to tell him that
her best female friend had committed suicide. Adrianne had lived in New York City for over five years, but the two friends had remained in touch.

Nick quickly went to comfort Natalie. As soon as she opened the door, Nat fell into his arms. He walked her in, shutting the door behind them as she cried.

"I just can't believe Adrienne's gone!"

"How did you find out?" Nick asked as they sat, still embracing, on the sofa in her apartment. Natalie pulled away, though only to reach a piece of paper that was lying on the coffee table.

"She sent me this letter the day she..." Natalie couldn't finish the sentence as she handed the letter to Nick. "I tried to call her as soon as I read it--then," she sniffled, "I called the police."

Nick's eyes were full of sympathy as she looked at him and said, "They found her in bathtub two days ago--she'd slit her wrists." Natalie cried hard as he pulled her close, kissed her head and held her. After a moment, she pulled away again, this time reaching for a box of tissues. Suddenly, Natalie stood up and said, "I could really use a cup of tea," as she made her way to the kitchen.

Nick leaned back and began to read the letter. It was obviously a suicide note, expressing the loneliness and hopelessness felt by the author.

Natalie returned from the kitchen, her eyes still red and swollen from crying. "I know how she felt," she said when she saw him looking at the letter. "I've felt that way myself at times."

He couldn't believe what he was hearing! Nick got up and walked to his lovely friend, his amalgamated accent becoming more noticeable as he spoke with great emotion, "Nat, you don't mean that! You can't be saying you have thought of killing yourself?"

Their gazes met when she raised her head and replied, "Why wouldn't I, Nick? I'm not close to the little family I have left in this world. I seem to always choose the wrong kind of man," Nick looked away as she continued in a raised voice, "my job isn't making me particularly wealthy or happy and I just lost my best friend!" He looked back at her suddenly with hurt in his eyes that softened to pity. Then Nick wrapped his arms around Nat once again while she cried.

*****************

He didn't even realize that he was still holding the bottle until it cracked. As the glass broke, pieces sliced into Nick's hand, bringing him out of his reverie. Alone and watching the bleeding stop and the cuts begin to close, Nick said aloud, "I have to talk to LaCroix."

"Why you come to me with this is beyond me Nicholas." LaCroix said after Nick related the events of the last few days--including the nightmare. The master vampire loomed large behind the son he had taken over seven centuries ago. "The interpretation of your dream is quite simple. You have stayed here too long. It is time to move on. As for Natalie...you must decide her fate as well. She cannot be left with the knowledge she has of our kind."

"Will you help me?" Nick grudgingly asked.

LaCroix raised his eyebrows in surprise at the request. He might have been touched had he not been so amused.

It had been only two nights since the decision was made. Nick marveled at how brief a time it took to end a life. The arrangements had been made; all that remained would be accomplished by the next sunrise. He sat at the dining table without reaction upon sensing LaCroix's arrival. Nick merely stared at the two bottles of human blood that were set down in front of him.

"Everything has been taken care of," the elder blond male spoke. "You needn't worry worry about anything other than the diaries."

"How can you be sure?" The younger asked as his eyes looked up from the feast set down before him and followed LaCroix as he walked around the table.

"Trust mon ami. All empirical evidence that Nicholas Knight was a vampire has been removed from Dr. Lambert's files. It is left to you to complete the mission." LaCroix glanced at the bottles on the table, smiled devilishly and said, "Enjoy!"

Natalie had looked as lovely as ever when Nick arrived for their date. They had attended Cameron Mackintosh's "Les Miserables," then returned to her apartment.

Upon entering, Natalie took off her wrap, smiled and said, "How about a drink? I could whip up one of my infamous protein drinks!" Nick took hold of her bare shoulders just as she started to turn toward the kitchen. Nat looked at him then put her hand on his face, remarking as she had earlier in the evening, "I still can't get over how flushed you are tonight."

"First date jitters, I guess," he responded as he bent to kiss the dark blond beauty.

Natalie shook with desire or fear, Nick sensed it to be some of both as deepened the kiss. After a few moments of kissing and caressing, the vampire whispered, " I want to make love to you, Natalie. Will you let me?"

"Yes!" She managed to respond several times through rapid breaths and kisses.

They made their way to her bedroom, undoing each other's clothing along the way.

"Can we really do this?" Natalie rasped, "I mean...is it safe?"

"I love you Natalie. I will always love you." Nick said as he laid her beside him on the bed.

"Oh Nick! I love you too!" He felt the joy in her embrace and the trust in her kiss. They made love.

It had been a long time since Nick had taken a mortal woman this way. Tremendous restraint was always required and he'd only been able to hope that feeding on human blood before the act would enable him to resist the temptation to plunge his fangs into Natalie's flesh and taste her. In the end, their lovemaking had been far more pleasurable for her than for him--but he did not let her know that.

A glowing Dr. Lambert looked at Nick with love and smiled. It was time. He looked directly into her eyes without even a slight glance away.

"Natalie, I love you, but we cannot be. I want you to remember our lovemaking, however you must forget that I am a vampire. Do you understand?"

Nat did not argue, so Nick knew he had her under his control. She responded with a quiet "yes" much to his relief.

"I am a normal man," he continued. " A police detective with whom you've had a romance which you decided to end. You want a man who can give you a commitment--a family. You are happy and optimistic about your future." He paused for a moment.

"Natalie, I need to know where you keep your diary. Tell me where it is."

She blinked, but still stared into Nick's eyes. "In the top drawer beside the bed." He didn't dare look away.

"It's time for you to sleep ma cherie. Remember that there are no such things as vampires. They exist only in dreams." Nat's eyes closed and she fell into a deep sleep.

Nick got dressed and removed two diaries from the chest beside the bed. He placed them in his coat pocket after making sure there were no more that did not pre-date the first time he and Natalie met.

As he bent over the bed to give Natalie a final kiss, a tear left Nick's cheek and trickled down hers. Then he left her apartment for the last time.

Just after sunrise, fire trucks made their way to 101 Gateway Lane. The building would be a total loss and among the ashes: Two diaries, files and the remains of a man. By sunset, Toronto's Detective Nick Knight would be declared dead, but the real Nicholas knew that the Knight was forever.
