What I think a lot of informational sites miss is the standard Saiya-Jin. This form is basically an average fighter. There are a few things that discern Saiya-Jin from other species. First of all the hair they have or at least this counts for Full Blood Saiya-Jin doesn’t change after the Saiya-Jin reaches maturity. This isn’t the case for Half- and less then Half Saiya-Jin. The second thing is that after every battle a Saiya-Jin gets stronger. This is best displayed on Namek when Vegeta fights Zarbon twice. The first time Zarbon defeats Vegeta easily. The second time Zarbon dies because of the increase in Power Level on Vegeta’s side, while vegeta has only healed in a rejuvenation pod from his last battle with Zarbon.

The first transformation ever to be seen in the history of Dragonball is that of the Oozaru. This form looks a lot like a giant ape. Hmm… come to think of it. It IS a giant ape. The first one we see assume this form is Goku I believe. His foster parent never knew what hit him. Well this form is easily assumed. The only prerequisites are a Saiya-Jin with a tail and a light source that gives the same amount of light as a full moon. The Saiya-Jin’s body is covered with hair and it grows proportionally. Unless a Saiya-Jin in Oozaru learns to control himself the creature means just plain destruction. Power Level goes up by x10.

The second transformation happens in DragonballZ. This is of course the change to Super Saiya-Jin. People’s opinions differ about how to acquire this stage but I think it’s a combination of rage, need and a freaking high Power Level. Goku was the first to assume this form. Seeing Piccolo sacrificing his life for him and seeing his life-long friend being blown up with only a twist of a finger unleashed the rage Goku needed. The need was of course that Goku wasn’t able to handle Freeza in his current state. Goku is the only exception when it comes to high Power Level. His Power Level was somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 (though no accurate accounts were given). But then again I think Goku is an exception to more things. In this form the hair changes goldish yellow and rises up. Furthermore a gold aura surrounds the Saiya-Jin. **

Vegeta is the first to reach the third transformation. I agree with other DBZ website masters that the stage that was reached by Vegeta was just a pumped up version of the SSJ1 Transformation. Most people, including me, like to refer to this stage as SSJ-grade: 2. In this form the muscle bulk of the Saiya-Jin increase big time, coming near to the USSJ form.

The next Transformation is the Ultimate Super Saiya-Jin or SSJ-grade: 3. This form was first achieved by Trunks. The hair of a Saiya-Jin spreads and the muscle bulk increases even more. The downside of this form, although it is a very strong form, is that the speed of a Saiya-Jin decreases dramatically. This was one of the reasons why Trunks couldn’t hit Cell anymore after he had fully loaded up in the Cell Saga (Or Cell Game to be more specific). Goku also reached this state but decided to give it up because it lacked speed (Manga only).

After the last few stages comes Super Saiya-Jin Full Power. This is just a complete mastery of the SSJ1 form. In the beginning a Saiya-Jin can’t control his rage. When he trains he learns to control it and is able to hold this form for extended periods of time. Goku is the first to master this form. Immediately in the fight against Freeza he totally masters it. Vegeta needed about 2 years to master it and Gohan 1 day (or a longer period of time since he was in the HyperBaulic Time Chamber.)

The next true level of Super Saiya-Jin is SSJ2. Gohan is the first to be pushed to this level. In the Manga it is shown that Gohan already reached the stage in the HyperBaulic Time Chamber but couldn’t control the energy. In the anime he reaches the stage when Cell blows Android #16 to pieces. There is no change in muscle mass. Only the hair grows a little longer and electricity starts to surround the Saiya-Jin. It’s an incredibly strong form and it’s my personal favorite. Goku and Vegeta also reach this stage I believe around the Buu era.

Super Saiya-Jin 3, or SSJ3 in short, is the next stage a Saiya-Jin can achieve. In this form the hair of a Saiya-Jin grows to a length equal to that of the Saiya-Jin’s body length (So Radditz with mucho hair in this form isn’t true. If Radditz would have reached Super Saiya-Jin 1 it would have looked as if he was already SSJ3) and grows thicker. The Saiya-Jin’s body grows in strength and a lot in Muscle mass. The eyebrows completely disappear giving the Saiya-Jin a Neanderthal look. The first one to reach this state is Goku (what else is new). He achieves this form while in the Buu saga. Read the saga for a more detailed description. It puts such a strain on the Saiya-Jins body that only Goku and the fusion Gotenks could handle it.

When a Super Saiya-Jin looks upon a fool moon, he changes into a form much like Oozaru. Only this time the hair covering the Oozaru is gold. This form is known as Golden Oozaru (surprise…). The ape form is the strongest form a Saiya-Jin can get, but it’s pure uncontrolled rage. The first one to learn this is Goku. This happens in the Bebi saga because the kaioushins had created a formula that grew Goku’s tail back.

The last form is SSJ4 form. Some say that this form isn’t a Super Saiya-Jin form because it is a compressed and controlled version of the Golden Oozaru. After a person learns to control his Golden Oozaru form he automatically changes into this. The hair of the Saiya-Jin turns thick and Black and the eyes are surrounded by a black ring giving the impression that a Super Saiya-Jin level 4 is always angry. The biggest part of the body is covered with red fur leaving only the chest exposed.

As for Super Saiya-Jin 5. Well…
lets just say all official DBZ
companies say that such form
doesn’t exist and that there is
no new series in the making
(The often heard Dragonball AF).
It’s probably just some fan’s imagination gone wild.

Another form is that of the Mystic Saiya-Jin. There’s only one person to reach this level and that is Gohan. I believe he saved Rou-Kaioushin from the Z-sword and in turn Rou-Kaioushin gave him a special training into becoming a mystic Saiya-Jin. This form has now remarkable changes. Gohan only decided to change his clothing in that what Rou-Kaioushin was wearing. The form surpasses SSJ3 in strength but is less strong than SSJ4. Ones Gohan assumes this form he never goes Super Saiya-Jin again. ***

*Because I couldn’t find what the Power Level boosts for the different forms are I have excluded them from this table.

**Side note on SSJ1. When a Saiya-Jin transforms in a Super Saiya-Jin something happens inside his DNA structure. This is the reason why Trunks and Goten could go Super Saiya-Jin easily at a very young age.

***Side note on Mystic Saiya-Jin. Because Gohan is my favorite character in DBZ I found it fun to say that until Goku reaches his SSJ4 stage Gohan is the strongest warrior in all of DBZ\GT.
