HISTORY OF SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY, INC.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1992, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven school teachers. This national collegiate sorority was incorporated on December 30, 1929 at Butler University.
The Founders of Sigma Gamma Rho sought to create an organization which offered teachers an opportunity for fellowship and professional growth through networking. They dreamed of a legacy, which promoted the ideas of greater service and achievement through higher education. Over 78 years later, with a membership of over 80,000 founded in over 450 chapters in the United States,the Caribbean and Germany; the legacy of Sigma Gamma Rho continues. The commitment of Sigma Gamma Rho to service is expressed in its slogan, “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” The sorority has a proud history of offering service. To eliminate housing problems for low income families, Sigma has formed a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Internal. Critical health issues in the African American community are being addressed through the Gift of Life Membership Club that provides resources for the Judie Davis Marrow Donor Recruitment Program and the Rejesta V. Perry Birthright Program which will focus on infants and children born to mothers that are substance abusers with AIDS or who are HIV positive. Wee Saviors is a national program that will teach young people ages 6-18 about personal financial management through seminars and field trips to local financial institutions.
The service of Sigma Gamma Rho from a global perspective includes the Program for Africa and the Mwanamugimu Essay Contest. Program for Africa, in conjunction with Africare, provides thousands of dollars t buy grain grinders for African women to alleviate their back breaking work. The Mwanamugimu Essay Contest is geared toward educating youth about Africa and African culture while improving their writing and research skills.
In addition, Sigma Gamma Rho provides support to numerous organizations. A partial list includes:
