My old Buck:
Doc, I called you just as soon as I seen ol' buck was sick.
He's been a little poorly but he hasn't missed a lick.
Last winter he got picky and wouldn't eat his grain
So I gave him Doctor Bell's; tied onions in his mane.
Then a couple months ago when he started losin' weight
I gave him Copenhaggen and a pound of catfish bait.
He came down with the splatters and all his hair fell out!!
So I fed him window cleaner and a couple of smoked trout.
Then last week after riding he got stiff as a pine!
His stomach needed smokin' so I used some turpentine.
He went plum down on Sunday, his liver so I guessed,
I doctored up his water and tied him facin' west.
Last night I got to thinkin', you were here two years ago,
you gave him some concoction for a cough and runny nose,
I wonder if your treatment, which then improved his luck,
had later turned against him and poisoned my ol" Buck?
Taken with adaption, from The Arizona Livestock Board Newsletter.
NOTE: I DON'T HAVE ALOT OF FAQS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I AM DEPENDING ON VISITORS TO MAIL ME WITH QUESTIONS. IF YOU NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING, PLEASE MAIL ME SO I CAN POST YOUR QUESTION AS A FAQ.
FEEDING:
WHAT IS ROUGHAGE? Hay, grass, the majority of the horse's diet.
WHY CAN"T I FEED DRY BEET PULP TO MY HORSE? Beet pulp expands when is wet, so you must ALWAYS SOAK IT so it expands and becomes soft. If you give it to your horse dry, it will expand in his stomach, sometimes making it burst and killing him.
WHAT IS A BRAN MASH? Bran mash usually comes dry, it is a light and flaky substance that you also add water to. It is a treat that is high in fats, and is usually fed to older horses with bad teeth. Giving too much can be VERY harmful to your horse.
WHAT DO OATS DO?
Oats are high in protein and give horses LOTS of energy. They are a much used supplement for racehorses.
WHAT ARE THOSE RED/BLUE BLOCKS THEY LICK? Those are salt licks and/or mineral supplements. Unlike children, horses know they need them and lick them without hassle!
VET:
DOES MY HORSE NEED TO BE WORMED EVERY MONTH? Yes, horses are the ideal host for worms. You can self worm your horse, but I reccomend a vet doing it unless you are experienced.
WHAT IS COLIC? Colic is a common yet sometimes fatal condition. Horses cannot vomit, so every so often if the horse eats too much, eats moldy hay, ect, it can cause a painful stomachache. If it severe enough, if or when the horse rolls it can twist the intestines, either killing the horse or putting it through surgery.
WHAT ARE SPLINTS? The splint bone used to be a toe when the horse was developing. Having evolved, the bone moved up so it is not a needed bone. Sometimes a horse can break or crack it, needing surgery sometimes. Usually, though a topical ointment,Dymenthol Sulfoxide (DMSO) is used and the bone is fine.
WHAT IS MELANOMA? Believe me, I am a true patriot of this. This is most common in older grey horses. especially arabians. Lucky me, I have an older grey arab. Fortunately his melanoma is benign. This tumor looks like a wart, a prominent black lump that occurs most often in the perineal region, on the underside of the tail or between the hind legs. (this is where my horse has it.) You should always call a vet to look at this, because unfortunately this type of tumor is almost always malignant, ans spreads rapidly to the abdoman. My best advise if you see this in your horse is TO CALL YOUR VET and have him examine it.
