GALINECO:(PONY)
ORIGIN: Mexico, taking it's name from the Spanish province of Galicia. It was introduced to the U.S. in the 1950's and is now bred there.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is neat and has an alert expression, but has minimal pony character. The overall stance and movement is that of a small horse. The neck is slender but strong, The back of medium length and the ribs well sprung. The quarters are square and well muscled, the shoulders narrow but with good depth. The legs are also long, slender and dry. The hooves are open and strong.
SPORT: Popular riding pony for children.
HEIGHT: Up to 14 HH
COLOR: Dun, brown, bay, chestnut.
GELDERLANDER:(LIGHT)
ORIGIN: Gelderland province of the Netherlands, between Apeldoorn and Arnhen.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is large and plain, and is almost always slightly roman nosed.(Instead of going straight to the muzzle it is arched, sloping.) The neck is long, curved and strong. The wither is usually large, the back of medium length. The quarters are straight in the croup. The shoulders are well set and reasonably upright. The legs are long and VERY muscular. They have good bone. The feet are hard and strong.
SPORT: All purpose.
HEIGHT: Up to 16.3 HH
COLOR: Chestnut and occasionally grey.
GIDRAN ARAB:(LIGHT)
ORIGIN: The Hungarian state of Mezohegyes, situated in the extreme south-east of the Hungarian plain. It was founded in 1785. The Gidran is also bred in Sutveny, and in Romania and Bulgaria.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head lacks the arabian refineness, and instead is plian, like that of a quarter horse's or thoughrabred's. The neck is thick and muscled. The backruns in almost a straight line to the rump, and is of medium length. The hind end is rounded and strong, the tail medium set. The shoulders are somewhat upright, the chest and barrel deep. The legs are short and thick and surprisingly lack a dry quality. The feet are sloped but strong.
SPORT: Amazing competition horse, heavier ones often used for carriage work.
HEIGHT: Up to 16 HH
COLOR: Almost always chestnut.
GOTLAND:(PONY)
(skogsruss)
ORIGIN: Gotland Island on the Baltic sea. It may have been there since the stone age. Today it is bred on the Swedish mainland and in Scandinavia.
CHARACTERISTICS: These ponies have a light, narrow build. The head is small and refined, the neck is short, and usually runs down too a long back and unimpressive quarters. The tail is low set and flowing. The barrel is narrow, the shoulders quite sloped. The chest is wide and deep. The legs are proportionate to the body and have sufficiant bone. The feet are good and strong.
SPORT: Once used for light farm work, now a popular riding pony.
HEIGHT: 12-13 HH
COLOR: Brown, dun, black, chestnut, gray and some palomino.
GRONINGEN:(LIGHT)
ORIGIN: The North of the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. It was initially bred as a heavy farm horse.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is heavy and notably convex in profile. The neck is short but muscular. The back is very long and there is a slight straightness from the crup. The withers are small. The quarters are renowned for their strength. They are broad and there is excellent depth trough the body.The legs are short and strong, and the joints are prone to roundness. The feet are of medium strong, hard and open.
SPORT: All purpose, a thicker horse.
HEIGHT: 16 HH
COLOR: Bay, brown.
HACKNEY:(LIGHT)
ORIGIN: Derives from the trotting roadsters of Norfolk and and, to a lesser extent, the Yorkshire roadsters. They are bred all over the world.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is slightly convex in profile,with small, alert ears and fine, quality muzzle. The eyes are large and bold. The neck is of medium length, thick and strong. The wither is usually not very prominent, the back is in perfect proportion to the body. The quarters are extremely strong and extremely rounded. The tail is high set and the breed is famous for the high carriage and the way they raise their legs in movement, however , however the crouper they wear in harness contributes to the tail carriage.
The barrel is deep, the chest allowing for good lung expansion. The joints are strong and clean, the hocks are low set.
SPORT: Renowned harness horse, but was ridden before it was ever introduced to driving.

COLOR: Bay, brown or black.
HACKNEY PONY:(PONY)

CHARACTERISICS: The head is slightly long in profile,with small, alert ears and fine, quality muzzle. The eyes are large and bold. The neck is of medium length and strong. HAFLINGER: (PONY)
ORIGIN: A mountain pony that originated in the Hafling district of Etschlander Mountains, in the southern Austrian Tyrol.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head retains pony character. The neck is short and strong. The back is short and also very sturdy, the quarters are roiunded and heavily muscled. The chest is deep and somewhat narrow. The shoulders are strong and sloping. The legs and feet are renowned for their strong hardiness, and the fact that the pony almost never goes lame.
SPORT: Hrness and riding pony.
HEIGHT: Up to 13.3 HH
COLOR: Always palomino or light chestnut.
HANOVERIAN:(LIGHT)
(westphalian)
ORIGIN: In the Electorate of Hanovar in Germany, and is bred throughout Westphalia.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is comparitively light and of medium size. The neck is long, fine and arched. It runs into big, sloping shoulders and pronounced withers. The back is of medium length, with particularly broad and powerful loins. The quarters are muscular and there is flattening at the croup. The chest is wide and deep. The legs are short, with cannons that have ample bone measurement. The joints are large and pronounced. The forearms are strongly muscled. The modern Hanoverian has hard, well shaped hooves.
SPORT: Dressage, all purpose.
HEIGHT: 15.3-16.2 HH
COLOR: Bay, chestnut, black, brown.
HIGHLAND PONY:(PONY)
ORIGIN: Scottish Highlands and Islands.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is fine and tapered, very broad acroos the poll, and short between the eyes and muzzle. The neck is very thick and muscled. The back is long and runs into an extremely rounded the cruop. The tail is set high on the quarters, and the hind legs are very correct in their proportion. The chest is very wide and deep. The feet are good and sound.
SPORT: Riding pony.
HEIGHT: Up to 14.2 HH
COLOR: Characteristics dun color with dorsal stripe and black points. Can be chestnut, bay, grey and occasionally others.
HOKKAIDO:(PONY)
ORIGIN: Hakkaido, Japan.
CHARACTERSITICS: The head is undistinguished and dull in its expression. It shows evidence of the Mongolian pony backround in the Japanese stock. Tyhe neck is of medium length and not excellently muscled, but still strong. The back is short , the quarters square. the tail is low set. The barrel is deep. The chest is narrow but deep. The legs are long and slender with some fine feathering on the heels. The feet are sound and hard.
SPORT: Farming and riding.
HEIGHT: Up to 13 HH
COLOR: All colors.
HOLSTEINER:(LIGHT)
ORIGIN: The principal breeding center for the Holsteiner is in the Elmshorn district of Schleswig-Holstein.
CHARACTERSITICS: The head inclines toard the plainer look of that of the Thoroughbred, but the Roman nose tendancy has been almost eliminated through selective breeding. The neck is long and slender, but strong, and runs into rounded but prominent withers. The back is long and lacks depth through the girth. The quarters are rounded and strong, the tail is high-set. The shoulders are sloped, to give a longer, freer action for riding. The legs are long and strong and have excellent bone. The feet are large, open and strong.
SPORT: All purpose, top choice among show jumpers.
HEIGHT: 16-17 HH
COLOR: Bay, brown, black, chestnut.
HUCUL: (PONY)
ORIGIN: Widespread from the Adriatic coast to the Black Sea. A native of the Carpathian mountains but is bred all over Central Europe. Of Tarpan origin.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is almost all pony, with a thick muzzle and tiny pricked ears. The neck is very short and thick, the back also short and sloping to strong rounded quarters. the withers are almost non-existant. The body is short and compact. The legs are strong but tend to taper. the feet are hard but small.
SPORT: Farming and riding pony.
HEIGHT: 12.1-13.1 HH
COLOR: Dun is the most usual, but pinto is also common. Can be bay and black also.
ICELANDIC: (PONY)
ORIGIN: Iceland, in the middle of the North Atlantic just south of the Arctic Circle. The breed is extremely pure, as no attempt has been made to cross them for 900 years.
CHARACTERISICS: The head is plain and heavy in proportion to the body, revealing a primitive connection. The horse is thick through the jowl. The neck is short and thick, and runs into a tiny wither. The back is proportionate, the quarters square and strong. The shoulders are upright, and contribute to the elevated action displayed at gaits such as the TOLT.
The legs are short and strong, but the hind legs appear light. The cannons are short, and there is a good slope to the pasterns. The feet are sound. The hocks, though not large, are low-set and produce powerful action.
SPORT: Riding pony, known to carry unbelievable weights for long distances.

COLOR: Everything but pinto.
