DALES(PONY)


ORIGIN: Various parts of the UK, but the traditional breeding areas are in the Northern countries of England, like the eastern Pennines.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is large but proportionate, the head is neat with small ears. The neck is thick and arched. The shoulders are heavy, strong and deep. The back is long and broad. The withers are VERY large and very muscled, with a medium set tail. The barrel is not extremely deep but the girth is deep enough. The legs are short with good joints and heavy feathering. Overall, the stance should be compact.
SPORT: Harness and riding pony.
HEIGHT: Up to 14.2 HH
COLOR: Always black.


DANISH WARMBLOOD:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: In the Copenhagen, Europe area, 1658.
CHARACTERISTICS: The the head is large and intellegent looking, with small eyes and minimum tapering to the muzzle. The ears are long and slim. The neck is very strong thick and proportionate, with a strong wide base. The wither is not low set and is usually quite prominent. The back is short but is strong and has depth. The croup is small in total stance and proportion, but has good muscles and gaskins. The tail is medium set. The chest is wide. The barrel is deep and powerful. The limbs are very powerful with clean joints, short cannons, and ample bone below the knee. Thge hooves are a famous quality to the breed, as they are strong and disease is rarely found.
SPORT: Brilliant and renowned dressage horses.
HEIGHT: 16.2-16.3 HH
COLOR: Liver chestnut, chestnut, bay, black.


DARTMOOR: (PONY)

ORIGIN: Wild moorlands off southeast England.
CHARACTERISTICS: The ehad is very small, with no fleshiness at the jowl. The ears are small and sharp. The neck is very thick and strong, the wither almost non existant. The back is long, The croup excellently formed and muscled. The barrel is strong and deep. The chest is narrow but deep. The legs have short cannons and strong bone, and the pasterns slope perfectly.
SPORT: Renowned riding pony, also good for jumping.
HEIGHT: 12.2 HH
COLOR: Registery bars only pinto coloring. Black brown and bay are prefered.


DOLE GUDBRANDSDAL:(HEAVY)

ORIGIN: Gudbrandsdal valley, Norway.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head has pony and arabian characteristics. With an arab profile and eyes. The forehead is broad. The neck is not long and base wide, but rather straight and thick. It is also very arched. The chest is VERY wide and deep, the back of medium length. The quarters are strong, the flank arches upwards toward it. The tail is low set and flowing. The barrel is short and is very deep. The legs are strong and muscled. The heels are feathered and the feet are small and strong.
SPORT: Agricultural work.
HEIGHT: 15-15.3 HH
COLOR: All colors, never pinto or spotted.(see color confusion page.)


DOLE TROTTER:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Derived from Dole Gudbrandsdal, see above.
CHARACTERISTICS: The thoughrabred breeding is apparant in the shape. The neck is long but not base wide, and muscled. The chest is good. The back is long and very straight in stance. The quarters are strong and rounded. The barrel is rather fat. The legs are quite thick, with prominent gaskins. The feet are not desireable, being weak and not well formed.
SPORT: Trotting racer.
HEIGHT: 15-15.2 HH
COLOR: Black brown and some bays.


DON:(LIGHT)

ORIGINS: Don River, Russia, early 18th hundred.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head has very large but refined ears, and an elegent head. The neck has good length but usually doesn't have good muscleing. The withers are hardly there, are very straight. The back is in a straight line through the croup. The tail is high set, short and thin. The shoulders are short and upright, the rib cage wide and very well sprung. The girth varies in each horse. The legs are straight ans strong, and have a somewhat dry tendency. The gaskins need to be improved through breeding, as they are insubstantial. The hocks also tend to be sickle. The hooves are excellent and very free from disease.
SPORT: Harness endurance and riding horse.
HEIGHT:15.3-16.2 HH
COLOR: Chestnut, brown and dun.


DUTCH WARMBLOOD:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Groningen province, netherlands, also near Germany.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is quite plain with pricked ears, with no fleshiness through the jowl. The neck is light and has good length, and is in excellent proportion to the shoulders. The withers are nice, and low set. The back is always quite long. The quarters are always very muscled, the tail long and flowing. The shoulders and forearms are very powerful. The body is deep with good ribs, the hocks well formed and low. This gives good thrust from behind. The knee has good bone, the hooves are excellent and a known feature to the breed. They are very well open and rounded.
SPORT: Renowned dressage horse, harness work, three day eventing.
HEIGHT: 16-16.3 HH (usually)
COLOR: Light chestnut, bay, brown.


EINSIEDLER:(LIGHT)

ORIGINS: Benedictine monastry of Einsiedeln, 10th century.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head looks alot like that of the thoroughbred. The neck is quite long, and widens out noticeably at the base. The back is of medium length but does not have much depth. The quarters slope considerably, towards a low set tail. The chest is broad and deep, the shoulders strong. The legs are slender and long with great bone. The hooves are generally hard and healthy.
SPORT: All purpose, ideal cavalry troop horses.
HEIGHT: 16.2 HH -17.1 HH
COLOR: Bay and chestnut.


EXMOOR:(PONY)

ORIGINS: Wild moorlands in Southwest England.
CHARACTERISTICS: The wide forehead presents wide, curious eyes, wide nostrils and short ears. The neck is strong and proportionate, the wither pretty much non-existant. The body is compact and deep, the back level and wide. The ribs are long and well spaced. The quarters slope up, and are almost shericall(though this is not in all the ponies.) The chest is wide, the shoulders well muscled and quite straight. The legs are short and very strong, the hooves strong and sound.
SPORT: Child's riding pony, harness.
HEIGHT: 12-12.3 HH
COLOR: Bay brown and dun with black points, without any white markings. Mealy(whitish) around muzzle and eyes.


FALABELLA: (MINIATURE)

ORIGINS: Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bred by the Fallabella family.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head has lots of pony character, but varies with each horse. Miniatures(falabellas) always tend to individually look like different breeds of large horses. The withers are very flat, the shoulders excessively upright. The back is medium, the quarters rounded and strong. The hind legs and pasterns are weak. The goal of miniature breeders are to produce a small horse without failing on conformation, nevertheless the faults remain and must be fixed through better breeding.
SPORT: Unsuitable for riding,(except for small children on larger ones) it is used as a novelty pet, and is shown in halter and driving classes.
HEIGHT: Up to 34 inches.
COLOR: All, appaloosa most highly prized.



FELL(PONY)

ORIGIN: Various parts of the UK, but the traditional breeding areas are in the northern countries of England, like the northern Pennines and the moorlands of the Cumbria.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head retains alot of pony character. It is small with pricked ears and tapers slightly. The neck is long and very thin, but is still muscular. The back is of medium length and is quite broad. The quarters are heavily muscled, the gaskins strong but not pronounced. The mane and tail are known to be long and flowing. The chest is very wide, the barrel deep. The hocks are low set, and there are never any faults in them. The front legs are also nicely made. The hooves are hard and strong and very rounded, but are extremely small in proportion to the rest of the pony. There is some light feathering.
SPORT: Farm pony, used for rounding up. Good for riding.
HEIGHT: Up to 14 HH
COLOR: Always black.



FINNISH:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Bred widely through Finland, where it obviously deprives it's name from.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is rather plain and straight, with alert, pricked ears. The neck is well in proportion to the long back, which is a usual feature of a harness racing horse. The croup is long, sloped, and has the tendency to be goose-rumped(see definition page)The barrel is deep and tucked under, the shoulders well sloped and powerful. The legs are correct, the gaskins powerful. The feet are hard and good.
SPORT: Harness racer primarily, but can be ridden.
HEIGHT: Up to 16 HH
COLOR: Any color is accepted, except pinto, but chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail are preffered.



FJORD:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Found in Scandanavia but bred throughout Norway.
CHARACTERISTICS: This horse overall has the presence of a small draft horse, and looks strikingly almost identical to the Asian Wild horse. The head is a smaller version of that of a draft's, but retains the straight profile of a light horse's. The neck is extremely thick and strong, and this is a common trait of the breed. The chest is broad and deep, the forelegs spread wide apart.
The withers are flat and round, the back of average length and muscular. The quarters are heavily muscled, the barrel deep. The legs are short with short cannons and flat dense bone.
SPORT:Riding horses, and a wide range of agricultural use including light draft work.
HEIGHT: 13-14.2 HH
COLOR: Always a uniform dun color with a dorsal stripe, and ometimes zebra bars. The mane is always coarse and erect, like a mohawk.(This is a natural occurance.)



FREDERIKSBORG:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Denmark, at the old Royal Frederiksborg stud.
CHARACTERISTICS: Not a speedy animal, but classy movement. The head is strong and intelligent, and is attached nicely to the long neck. There are elegent and typical carriage shoulders, low withers and a long back. This contributes to the high head carriage during movement. The quarters are very strong and elongated, The barrel VERY deep and VERY wide, allowing for excellent lung expansion. The legs are proportionate with good strong joints. The overall stance is that of a large and slightly stockier breed.
SPORT: Carriage horse, light draft work and occasional riding.
HEIGHT: Up to 16.3 HH
COLOR: Chestnut.



FREIBERGER:(LIGHT)
(FRANCHES-MONTAGNES)

ORIGIN: A mountain horse that originated in the hilly Jura region on the french border of Switzerland.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is small and sometimes pony-like, although the breed is quite thick-set. The neck is short but nicely curved. The wither is small, the back proportionate to the rest of the body. The quarters are thick and strongly muscled. The gaskins are strong and well developed. The chest is deep and of average width, the barrel of good depth. The legs are very strong and the feet are well open and rounded.
SPORT: Pack and harness horse. Can be used for riding. A very powerful breed.
HEIGHT: 15 HH
COLOR: Mostly bay.



FRENCH TROTTER:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Normandy. The main breeding centers are at the national studs of Le Pin and Saint Lo.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is plain but not common, is set extremely well on the neck. The withers are defined but sometimes rounded, The back long. The quarters are rounded and heavily muscled, typical of harness racing breeds. The very strong shoulders are well sloped, to give long loose trotting action. The legs are excellent with big flat knees, strong feet and sufficiant bone. Overall stance is of a powerful but graceful typical trotter.
SPORT: Harness racing and saddle horse.
HEIGHT: Up to 17 HH
COLOR: Predominant colors are chestnut, bay and brown.



FRIESIAN:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Friesland area in the north Netherlands.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is refined and intelligent, with small pricked ears. The long, muscular neck contributes the impressive head carriage. The withers are very small, in some horses almost non-existant. The strong, rounded quarters slope downward to a low set tail. The is great power in the short hind legs. The shoulders too are powerful. The body is well made and compact, and ideally suited for carriage work. The legs are short and thick with big, clean joints. The hooves are hard, sound and well formed. There is light feathering.
SPORT: Carriage horse, also highly prized for dressage.
HEIGHT: Up to 16 HH, lots of height variations.
COLOR: Always black.


FURIOSO:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN:Hungarian state studfarm Mezohegyes, in the far north of the Hungarian plains. However, since 1961 the Furioso has been bred at the old stud farm of Apajpuszta generally bred all over central Europe.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is refined and resembles that of the thoughrabred, despite very prominant ears. The neck is of average length and proportionate, The bck also of average length but strong. The quarters are strong and square, The sholders wide and semi-deep. The body and ribs are well sprung. The legs are long and slender, the hooves strong but small.
SPORT: Harness and riding horse.
HEIGHT: 16 HH and under
COLOR: Chestnut, bay and brown.
