CANADIAN:

(coming soon) Thanks to a visitor who reminded me to add this breed.

CAMARGUE:(PONY)

ORIGIN: The marshes of Rhone Delta in southern France, live there today.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is heavy, the fur coarse. The neck is short, running to flat withers and a strong, long back. The back quarters are very small, with a medium set, bushy tail. The legs are short and strong and have good joints. The hooves are hard, sound, and shoeing is unneccesary. The shoulders are inclined upright, causeing a short strided trot and a high stepping walk. The body is deep chested.
SPORT: Traditional mount of french cowboys. They tend and work the black cattle native to the marshes.
HEIGHT: Max 14 HH
COLOR: Always a very white grey. (see color confusion page.)

CASPIAN:(PONY)

ORIGIN: Discovered as recently as 1965 on the shores of the Caspian sea.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is short and is covered with very fine skin. The neck of the modern caspian horse is long and is very arched. It gives a generous length of rein, and the wither is very high. The back is of medium length, and is very nice for riding. The quarters are strongly muscled and have an unexpected length. The tail is very low set. The shoulders are those of a quality riding horse, and are well sloped from the withers. The stride is smooth, low and long for that of a pony. The legs are slender but strong, and very proportionate to the body. Though the cannons are long the bone is still very dense and strong. The feet are medium sized and not prone to disease.
SPORT: An excellent driving and riding horse.
HEIGHT: 10-12 HH
COLOR: Bay, grey or chestnut.

CHINCOTEAGUE PONY:(PONY)

ORIGIN: Chincoteague and Assateague islands. These horses were made famous by the true story of "Misty of Chincoteague" by Marguerite Henry.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head has an almost straight profile, but maintains the pony character. The neck is muscular and widens out at the base. The withers are rounded, but not too small or large. The back is very short and there is good depth. The croup is large and rounded, the tail is very low set. The hind legs are very weak. The forehand is also weak but has improved over time. The cannons are long, the bones light with poor joints. The hooves are strong and don't always require shoeing. The barrel is very deep.
SPORT: Children's ponys; a yearly round up is held. The ponies are driven off Assateague island where all the wild ones live, (not all of them) and are sold. This is traditional and is a way of keeping the population down.
HEIGHT: Up to 13HH
COLOR: Pinto, grey bay and occasionally others.

CLYDESDALE:(HEAVY)

ORIGIN: Founded in the early 18th century on Flemish horses imported into the Lanarkshire area in the Clyde Valley of Scotland.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head profile is usually straight, and the breed has a broad forehead. The neck is short and thick, the back short and deep also. The withers are clearly defined. The quarters are big and the hind legs are quite long, unlike those of a heavy horse. The hocks are almost always cow-hocked, but that is not a conformational fault when showing the Clydesdale. The shoulders are sloped, the hooves flat, hard and heavy with lots of feathering. The barrel is deep and thick. This animal is not stocky like the BRETON, but rather very tall.
SPORT: Show ring, pulling. Mostly a show horse, though.
HEIGHT: 16-18 HH
COLOR: Bay and grey are the colors most widely seen.

COLORADO RANGER HORSE:(LIGHT)

ORIGIN: Evolution began in Virginia and Nebraska, but it takes it's name from the state where it was developed.
CHARACTERISTICS: The head is intelligent and defined, with a slight arabian outlook. The eyes are small. The neck is small and of short length, the wither rounded but not high. The back is short, muscular and strong. The quarters are enourmous and very rounded, the tail high set. The chest is very deep and very wide, the legs short with short cannons and strong feet. The barrel is deep and straight.
SPORT: Riding horse.
HEIGHT: Up to 15.3 HH
COLOR: Always spotted. A ranger can be registered as an appaloosa, but not vice-versa.

CONNEMARA:(PONY)
