| Questions most Frequently Asked by my students |
 |
1. Why am I in this level?
Because you are a mid to high intermediate. You are proficient in speaking, you are good at reading, your listening skills are o.k. but most probably, just like 75% of all my students, your writing needs work.
2. How can I fail this class, if I'm so good?
Even if you think you are top notch, you might need to work on YOUR weaknesses. Most students need grammar and writing. Hey, I still do, and I'm your teacher.
3. How can I impove my listening skills?
Well you might want to watch a TV show once everyday, not just any "no good" show (like Jerry Springer!) but a program that interests you. The news is also a good choice as well as any news magazine that you consider interesting. Then you could listen to the tape we use in class more than once. Finally, why don't you rent an Engkish movie that you have seen in French before.
4. How can I work on my reading skills?
Read, read, and read...The newspapers, magazines, books, the Net, and any text in your SB that has not been assigned to you. As you have noticed, each unit has two texts. We always work on one so you could do the other one on your own. I can give you the correction grids.
5. How can I become even more fluent and proficient in speaking?
First of all, start by speaking English in class all the time. Like I said, you can talk about anything you want as long as you stay focussed on your task and you speak English with your partner or partners of the day. Next, Mike, our monitor, will be more than pleased to chat with you in the F222. You can also find a friend in your group and call this person to practice together over the phone. Lastly, speak to your iner-self in English.
6. I'm scared of failling writing. What can I do to put myself in a "passing the course mode" for this skill?
No problem, you are not the first one. Just as in your first language, somme people can speak well but can't write properly, this also goes on in second language learning. The key, I'm sure you already know, is grammar. Don't hesitate to do more than what I ask for. Then prepare a journal or diary in which you can plan to write once or twice a week. I can have a look at it once in a while.
7. Why do I hate speaking English in class or with my partner?
Class is not a real-life situation and your partners in class are not real-life English speaking people. This is normal and happens to anyone learning or practicing a second or foreign language, even more so when the course is compulsory! I'm sure you feel much more at ease speaking English in a real English "so to speak" set up rather than in class, like when you go on a trip or a vacation where you have to speak Shakespear's language. But, heck, forget you are in class and role-play along with me and the others.
8. How do I know if I'm doing fine or not in this class?
First of all, look at your marks. Second, take time to correct the work I hand you back. Then, if you easily understand jokes or play on words and puns in English, that's good. Also, if you are dreaming in English, this is a good indication of success. Finally, if not sure, come see me.
9. If all instructions for this class are on site, do I still have to come to class?
Absolutely, because class is compulsory and in class we do lab work which the site doesn't provide. We are also speaking English all the time which is not doable on line. Finally, we do our controled listening in lab and class.
Remember, if you miss 2 classes you are not eligble for a remake and if you miss 3, well you are not allowed to take your finals.
10. I was always told in high school that I am super wonderful in English. Why is Miss. Ouellet, here at college, telling me I have many weaknesses?
You are wonderful but no one is ever finished learning a language, specially not English. In this level we want to upgrade our general vocabulary, syntax, structure; we want to master complex and compound sentences; we want to get into a higher level of grammar; and above all we want to take you from a common basic street travel English level to a more sophisticated, well read college level English.
