| Activity of the Week |
| Communicative activities fun for all, as well as a good way of practicing in use what we learn in grammar... |
 |
As you all know by now, we have a weekly communicative activity. Every week the activity is woth 5%. The evaluation grid for each activity is given with instructions on how to do the activity. Activities are due as you walk into lab. every week.
WEEKS 15-16-17: These are exam weeks so there is no particular activity. You must finish your workbook, prepare your grammar package and read ahead some texts starting from unit 10 going down to unit 5 if you want to be prepared for your four skills. As for your speaking, don't forget to practice once or twice before as this will help you deliver a better presentation.
WEEK 14: This week is "let's prepare for finals" week.
* You have to prepare the grammar package this week. So this can be done in class, on the computer, or at home, as long as you hand it in for next week, which is week 15.
* You can also work on your speaking exam because I will have given you all the instructions you need in class. Don't forget that you have to have a cassette for your speaking presentation. You also have to have a photocopy of your magazine article. And you must get your article approuved by me first, so I will be signing your article this week in class.
* You must have noticed that in this English course I have treated you like adults. Most of you have done well and have taken full responsibility for your learning process. But some of you are still in the High School mode, meaning you still think that marks are "normalised" according to the bell curbe. Well, welcome to the real world...
WEEK 13:
This week is PUB week. Here are the basic instructions:
1. take your magazine and look for a one page ad (picture and text).
2. Choose a thesis statement you will write about concerning this publicity.
3. Transform your thesis statement into a question, see P. 81A in your WB.
4. Finally, give me three possible answers in 25-50 words for each.
5. I need a title page= p.1, a photocopy of your advertisement= p.2 and your work= p.3:
a) thesis
b) question
c) answer 1= 25-50 words
answer 2= 25-50 words
answer 3= 25-50 words
6. Please put this evaluation grid somewhere on your title page:
Thesis /1
Question /1
3 Answers /3
Total /5
WEEK 12:
I will give you a newspaper and tell you exactly what I want in class.
Meanwhile, here are instructions:
1. choose an article in a English newspaper or on the Net;
2. cut it out and paste it on a sheet of paper;
3. the article has to have between 250-500 words;
4. write a 50 word summary of it;
5. change the title, giving it a new one;
6. find 3 different verb tenses and describe them according to active or passive, present or past, and simple, progressive, perfect or perfect progressive;
7. ask yourself 3 questions about the article;
8. answer the 3 questions;
9. don't forget your title page;
10. here is the evaluation grid that I would like you to put on your title page:
sum. /2

WEEK 11:
This week is "magazine" week or "W10" week. Here is what you have to do: (notice I didn't write "hafta"):

2. Find a partner who likes the same kind of magazine.
3. Ask your partner 10 different WH questions concerning his or her magazine.
4. Write the complete answer below each question.
5. Prepare a title page.
6. Make a photocopy of the front page of his or her magazine.
7. The partner will then do exactly the same but with you, in other words, you will talk about his or her magazine, and your partner will talk about yours, taking into consideration the answers to the questions.
8. Hand in one package for each person that includes your title page, your Q+As, and the photocopy of the front page of the chosen magazine..
9. In class, I'll model the kinds of smart questions I am looking for.
10. Here is the evaluation grid:
Questions..../1.5 The smarter the better
Answers....../3.5 With full sentences, complexe and compound...
WEEK 10:
Our activity this week is a conference given by Mike to your group concerning learning disabilities.
You must take notes then summarise the conference by explaining three main elements your learned and what you learned from them.
This activity is worth 5% just like all the others.
You must present a presentation title page, your rough notes and finally, your three elements (1page=250 words).Be sure to make three paragraphs and don't forget transition words...See pages 81 and 83 in WB for instructions on how to write a "body" paragraph. You must do your three paragraphs according to these sêcifications.
Be also careful to have a topic sentence and either examples, explanations or stats to back up your topic sentence.
The evaluation grid is:
*content /3 (one mark per paragraph)
*notes /2 (I'll check to see how many notes you can take in an hour)
This is to be handed in the following week as usual and from now on I do not accept late work and will not give chances to students who do not submit their work on time...Cyber Olive is going from nice to mean...This is for your own good, just like when your mom made you eat your spinach. We call it tough love!!!
WEEK 9:
Too bad this week we have a writing exam 5%.
Please follow instructions found in homework to know how to prepare.
WEEK 8:
Youpie...Take a break. It's almost Spring...
Watch TV and go to the movies...Rent English movies.
Try and see "Elizabeth" and "Shakespear In Love" in English if possible...(not in Rimouski of course...)
WEEK7:
No activity because you have a speaking 5%, listening 5%, and reading 5% exam...Be sure to bring in your WB for another 5%.
Good luck in your tests.
WEEK 6:
This week is " let's review grammar" week. We will be working in class to review together all the grammar from units 1-5.
Be prepared to summarise in the class (in front of your group) one or many elements of grammar.
You must prepare schemata for each of the two grammar focuses included in each unit. I will be picking up these summaries just before your exams next week. If the grammar packages are not done, by groups of 5, you will not be able to come to the exams. I am not giving marks for this because it is compulsory for you to do it and hand in before exams and also because it is a great way to review grammar.
WEEK 5:
This week is "friendship" week.
You are a songwritter and a musician friend of yours needs words to go on his music.
You are interested in helping him out because the subject of his theme is "friendship".
Here are the instructions (he gives you) to be followed.
You must sent a friendship greeting card to a friend by email.
You can use any good card site you know: hotmail, dromadaire, blue mountain etc...
Your card must contain a friendly poem that you are going to write according to these guidelines.
Before sending, make a copy of it and this is what you will have to hand in to me in class on week 6, starting the 22nd. of Feb. The content must talk about feelings. You must also ikkustrate it with a picture, or drawing, or illustration of some kind.
1. 4 lines, 4 lines, 3 lines, 3 lines, for a total of 14 lines.
2. a rhymes with b, and again a with b; cdcd; efef; gg.
3. each line has 10 syllables.
4. the first 4 lines (quatrain) end with a period because they convey a complete and finished idea.

Remember when you used to "foxer l'école" or "foxer un ami". Well you were like Zorro who is foxy, clever, cunning, and sometimes deceitful (i before e except after c). But please do NOT fox this class!
