Thunder crashed in the background as the door creaked open. My dare was to stay in the desolate haunted house for one evening. I was alone in an empty room with a lantern that had burned out. The house seemed so morbid from the inside; it seemed decrepit from the outside. I remembered the legend my friends told me about the haunted house of the spirit of the young girl that died in it before.
I tried to familiarize myself with the house, trying to remember what every room was. Upstairs were three bedrooms and an empty room, where I was. Downstairs were a kitchen, 2 living rooms, and a cellar. I moved my things to the other room where I decided to sleep. As I put my head on the pillow and fell asleep, I heard a scream. I shot up in bed trying to find the origin of the scream, but my attempts were to no prevail. I climbed out of bed, and left the room. Edging my way down the hallway, I tripped over a loose floorboard. I hunched over to lift up the floorboard and found a green, dusty book. In script, on the cover of the book, was the name Amber.
I heard another blood-curdling scream and dropped the book. I looked around to see where it came from, but saw only shadows. I crept back to my room to read the journal.
When I got to my room, I looked into the mirror to come face to face with a ghost. She was a child with blonde curls and wearing old-fashioned clothes. I backed away from the mirror hoping this was only a dream. I heard a soft voice whispering in my ear.
“The journal is the key,” It was not a youthful voice, but instead it was an old person’s voice

If that was what was going to end the screams, I’d have to read the journal. I cracked open the book to the first entry. I skimmed through it, and found that this girl was very troubled. She didn’t get along with her stepfather, and he would hit her constantly. The last entry ended with “he is at my door now, furious that I will not open it. The banging has stopped. I believe he has gone to get the key. What ever happens, know that it is his fault.”
As I read the last page I felt a chill go down my back. Just then, I felt a pulling on my hair and something slapped my face. I realized I was not the only one in the room.
A grisly voice said,” Amber, you’ve been bad. I told you not to go into the cellar. Get up, we’re going back down there”
That was it! I had to go to the cellar. I ran through the hall with the journal in one hand. I reached the cellar door with a bit of hesitation. I gathered up all my courage and whipped open the cellar door. A blast of cold air hit my face. I took each step cautiously, and finally reached the bottom. The door slammed shut, and the light from the lightning was filtered out. Now there was nothing but darkness. I saw a glow from the corner. It was the little girl from the mirror.
“Don’t worry Amber. It’s okay. Your stepfather won’t hurt you anymore,” I coaxed.
“Amber!” I heard a voice scream. It was her stepfather.
“Don’t worry about him. He can’t hurt you.” She looked up, and in the midst of her glow I caught a glimpse of skeletons. Suddenly, a man ghost came out of nowhere.
I figured that he was Amber’s stepfather. I tried to shield Amber from him and then his ghostly whip hit my back. It was ice cold, but I wouldn’t let him hurt Amber. It was the only way to let her ghost free. I ran to open the cellar door and screamed for Amber and any other ghosts to leave and go on with their afterlives. A stream of light flashed out of the cellar and floated towards the sky. Amber materialized in front of me with and older woman, her mother, and said thank you.
Her stepfather was still in the basement with the skeletons. With his icy stare watching me, I took his victims bones away. He was a murderer, and his victims could not find peace until the murderer was found and their bones were buried. Dragging the bones outside was a tedious task, but finally I was done and I passed out from exhaustion.
“Wake up,” said a familiar voice. It was my friend’s. “How was the haunted house?”
“Okay I guess. It’s not haunted anymore.”

who arrived home, from his 72nd birthday. As the man walked in the house of his dead parents lightning flashes behind him.
He went to get changed when he suddenly heard the sound of footsteps behind him. He turned around and nothing was there. He continued to walk down the hall yet he continued to hear the footsteps. When he finally decided to turn around again he saw his parents. His dad was holding a gun and his mom standing staring at her into his eyes. The old man began to back up more and more until he lost his balance and stumbled back and fell down three flights of stairs. He plunged to his death, and that is where I come in.
I have to stay in the house for two days and three nights. The house is considered the most haunted house in all of Jersey. I walked in holding my sleeping bag and pillow. The lights were still working but they were not bright. Walking up the creaking steps I began to hear what sounded like people talking. Feeling nervous I continued to walk up the stairs. I entered the bedroom of the old man. There were pictures of the old man and his family. I opened the closet to find a casket. I jumped back gasping for air and my heart filled with fear.
I quickly left the room and continued down the hall I turned into what I think was his parent’s bedroom. When I opened the door I was astonished by the spider webs and the cold breeze coming from the open window. I left that room and went back down stairs to set up my stuff for the night. I laid down thinking about the casket.
The next mourning I woke up and made myself a quick breakfast; I sat down and rested until 5pm.
I crept upstairs to find the ghost of the old man and his parents. The ghost began attacking me, luckily I made it away in time and I ran into the old man’s room. I turned and slammed the door. I went to examine the casket again. I shut the casket and noticed that there was a name written on it. I brushed off the dust and realized that it spelled R-A-Y-M-O-N-D B-U-C-K-N-O. That was my name! I was terrified and started to shake. The ghosts had found a way into the room. They lifted my body as if I were as light as a feather and laid me in the casket and slammed it closed. They must have locked it because I was kicking and screaming and I couldn’t get out. I felt the casket begin to move, the casket was laid back down.
I began to hear stuff falling on the casket. I was being buried alive! I began kicking and screaming again and that was the end. Now I am one of the ghosts that haunt the house.
