May 23, 2000 -- Depending on which side of the fence your tastes lie on, "My Name Is," the breakthrough 1999 single from rapper Eminem, was either irresistibly catchy or excruciatingly annoying.
Yet no one denies that the song served as the ultimate calling card for Eminem, eventually leading rap's whiny young upstart to a multi-platinum bow with The Slim Shady LP as well as a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
Now the rapper hopes to return to center stage, this time using his real name, with The Marshall Mathers LP. Recorded in Detroit, New York, and Los Angeles, the album adds to Eminem's street cred thanks to the involvement of co-producer Dr. Dre and a guest spot by Snoop Dogg. The title of the CD's first single, "The Real Slim Shady," even suggests that Em may be ready to jettison the grating persona that made him a star in 1999, though he recently told the online music publication Launch that he hardly intends to completely reinvent himself.
"It's the same thing," he said of the new record. "I'm gonna always be Slim Shady as long as I rap. It's along the same lines. You know, it's got a little bit of the smart-ass humor in it. ...But I would say, if anything, it's more, the songs are a little bit more serious."
Equally serious is the furor the album's lead single has been generating among pop fans for the backhanded swipe it takes at teen superstar Christina Aguilera (who won that Best New Artist Grammy), a controversy Eminem addressed and then tried to put to bed in early May.
"What happened was she got on MTV talking about my personal business," he told Launch. "I really don't feel like I have to keep bashing her in the press or anything like that. I said my piece on my record. It was an eye for an eye, you know what I'm saying? I fought fire with fire and then that's it."
Following the release of the new album on May 23, Eminem will join forces on a summer tour with his rap mentor Dre, the man who took the Kansas City-born Mathers under his wing and helped him land the major label deal that led to his becoming the most successful white rapper since Vanilla Ice. The tour will mark Dre's first national outing in over a decade. But all eyes will be on Eminem as he takes his place alongside Snoop, Ice Cube, and Warren G, hoping to prove once and for all that the real Slim Shady is more than just a bright but fleeting flash-in-the-pan.
