I was woken up the next morning as soon as the sun made her first appearance in the sky. I wanted more sleep, but I got up without complaining and went over to where the rest of the party was eating breakfast. I got my own breakfast, ham sandwhiches and water, and ate eagerly. I’d never been so hungry in all of my life.
“Okay,” said Menkarden, after about twenty minutes. “It’s time to get going again.”
“Who died and made you King?” Camri muttered as she mounted her house. Menkarden choose to ignore this comment and got onto his horse as well. I was just about to mount mine when the horse said,
“Oh no! Not HER again! I tell you, I won’t go through that again! No, not for all the oats in the Kingdom! No way! I am one of the King’s prize horses, not a common mule! I refuse to have this girl ride on me. She’s the worst rider I’ve ever had.”
“I know what you’re going through Chestnut,” said Beth’s horse, “This girl here,” the horse raised a hoof and pointed it at Beth, “Has no clue how to ride either, and I’m not going to take it!”
“Me neither! I’m going on strike! I am sick and tired of catering to these humans!” said my horse
“That’s a good idea,” said Chestnut, “So am I.”
“So am I,” said Siri’s horse suddenly, “I’ve had enough too.”
“All right!” said my Chestnut.
“Power to the horses!” said Beth’s horse.
“Humans-are-un-fair! Humans-are-un-fair!” the three horses started to yell.
“I’m going on strike too!” yelled Menkarden and Camri’s horses and they too started to chant, Humans-are-un-fair! Humans-are-un-fair!”
In less then five minutes, all of the horses had gone on strike and were refusing to take us a step further.
“You, you peasants have lost me my horse, said the Great Zameri angrily. “How dare you! I am the Great Zameri and you are just, just-“
“SHUT UP!” Beth and I both yelled.
”You deserve to be yelled at,” said Camri furiously, “Now we don’t have any horses. We’ll have to walk.”
“I can’t BELIEVE you two did this!” said Menkarden.
“US!” I screeched. “WE didn’t do anything!”
“It’s your fault the horses are on strike,” Camri shot at us.
“I’ts not OUR fault we never had riding lessons,” said Beth..
“It was YOUR horrible riding that landed us in this mess! said Menkarden heatedly.
“Oh, shut up!” Beth yelled, “It wasn’t our fault! How were we supposed to know the horses here can talk and-“
“Oh,” snapped Chestnut, “Just because we’re horses you think that means we don’t have FEELINGS?”
“No, I-“
“That is discrimination!” yelled Beth’s horse. “You hear me?! Dis-crim-in-a-tion!”
“Humans-are-un-fair! Humans-are-un-fair!” chanted the horses, louder then ever.
“Well, now look at the mess you, you peasants have gotten us into!” said the Great Zameri.. “How dare you loose my horses! I am the Great Zameri and you-“
“SHUT UP!!!!!!” We all yelled.
“This is nuts!” said Beth angrily. “We can’t go five minutes without someone getting into a fight!”
“Yeah, the only one who hasn’t been arguing is Siri,” I added.
“Why don’t we just walk?” Siri asked.
“Walk!” Menkarden exclaimed. “We can’t walk all the way to the Deadly Forest! It’s thousands of miles away!”
“You think the horses are going to let us RIDE?” said Siri, pointing at the horses, who had grouped themselves in a circle around us.
“Humans-are-un-fair! Humans-are-un-fair!” they chanted.
“We refuse to go one more step with you ungratefuls!” said Chestnut.
“You said it girl!” said Beth’s horse. “We don’t need to take this! I am sick and tired of catering to the whims of you humans!”
“Yeah, we all are!” said Menkarden’s horse angrily.
“Yeah, we’ve had enough!” said Siri’s horse.
“You all don’t have it nearly as hard as me!” said the Great Zameri’s horse heatedly. “I’ve had to listen to that idiot’s mindless chatter ever since we started! ‘I am the Great Zameri! You are just a, just a horse!’
“I think those’re the only two phrases he knows!”
“How dare you insult me!” yelled the Great Zameri. “I am the Great Zameri and you are just a, just a-“
“Keep your mouth shut!” said his horse.
“Yeah, we aren’t listening to one more word!” said Camri’s horse.
“Humans-are-un-fair! Humans-are-un-fair!” the horses started chanting again.
Menkarden looked at the horses for another minute and then said-
“Walking it is,” and started off up the path. We all ran to catch up to him.
We walked for seven hours straight before Menkarden would let us stop for lunch. As we sat down and started to eat, Camri said angrily-
“I don’t know what makes you think you’re the boss Menkarden. I’m not going to take much more of this. You don’t know everything, you know.”
“I know a whole lot more then-“
But Beth cut in, “Don’t start again,” she said desperately.
“Yeah, let’s just eat our lunch,” said Siri.
Camri and Menkarden did so, but with much glowering and muttering in the process. We finished our lunch in fifteen minutes, with no more arguments and not much talking. We sat and rested for five more minutes before getting hoisting our backpacks over our shoulders and starting off again.

Walk, walk, and walk some more. That’s how the day went, with everyone staying perfectly silent. With the exception, of course, of the Great Zameri.
“If you, you peasants had just let me handle things from the start we wouldn’t be in this mess! I am the Great Zameri! I have been all around the kingdom! I’ve been knighted twenty times! But noooo, you, you peasants just HAD to interfere. If you had just given me a free reign, we’d be riding horses right now instead of walking. I’ve a good mind to turn back right now, it’d serve all of you right.”
“Wish you would,” muttered Camri, but the Great Zameri didn’t hear her and he went on-
“You handled the horse strike situation most uneffectively. I could’ve done much, much better. But nooo, you just had to do it yourselves, didn’t you? I’ve seen horse strikes before, I know how to handle them! But you, you peasants had to interfere with my work, didn’t you?”
“Well,” said Beth, “At least we know that he can actually speak semi-intelligently.”
“You call that intelligent conversation?” I asked.
“He still can’t get away from the word peasants though, can he?” said Camri.
“I think that’s just a habit he can’t break,” said Menkarden.
“Why you, you peasants! How DARE you insult me! I am the Great Zameri and you are just, just peasants! I’ve a mind to-“
“Old habits die hard,” I said, with a sigh.

After five more days of walking we finally reached a town. A small town, to be sure, but still a town.
“Catmantaw,” said Menkarden with a groan. “We went in the oppisite direction then we were supposed to.”
“I TOLD you we should have gone east,” said Camri angrily.
“How do you know we should have gone east?” Yelhsa said heatedly. “Maybe we should have gone north.”
“Yeah, and maybe the grass is green and the sky is blue on some distant planet,” said Camri.
“Well,” said Beth, “I guess we should have gone north then.”
Both Camri and Yelhsa chose to ignore this. They looked at Beth for a moment, but then went back to their argument as if she hadn’t spoken at all.
“You need to learn to show deference to your elders young lady,” said Yelhsa.
