Storms pass through us, emotional turmoils filled with pain, seeming to be without hope, with no redemption possible. When we are in them they seem as if they will never end, as if it will always be this way.

That is when we desperately need to do nothing at all.

That is when bizarre solutions occur to us, like suicide, or quitting jobs, or starting or ending relationships, declarations that will not stand the test of time.

In the state of tragic madness we are connected to the endlessness of human tragedy. The archetype roils within us, blocking all exits. No way out.

No way out but time, that is.

If we can just endure one more day, one more minute, one more second we can make it.

Then time is torture we must endure.

But for every dark night of the soul there is a sunrise. This is not a cliche. The sun, in fact, comes up. It does. And it is reliable.

As long as you are alive.

Then you become really alive. There is nothing like surviving to restore the preciousness of existence.

I have been there, in the pain, and I can tell you that it ends.

And, my God, thank you for this life, this beautiful life.

When I remember that I once thought it was all over....I can only be grateful
that I did nothing when I thought of the gun.
