Compulsive overexcersize is often another behavior used to purge or accelerate weight loss. Those who may have symptoms of Compulsive Exercise have episodes of repeatedly exercising beyond the requirements of what is considered safe, will find time at any cost to do the exercise (cutting school, taking off from work, staying awake to excersize, hiding in the bathroom and exercising, etc.). The main goal of the exercise can be burning calories and to "relieve the guilt" from just having eaten or binged, or to give them "permission" to eat.
The difference between normal excersize and compulsivly over excersizing is this: if a person does excersize to stay healthy and fit, they are normal. If they excersize as a compulsion ("I have to excersize or I can't do ---"), than it is not normal. For example, working out for 30 minutes a day 5 times a week is totally healthy and normal. Someone with an excersize disorder, however, might doing hundreds of crunches, run uncountable miles, and do push-ups until their arms feel like rubber.
If you are in doubt of whether or not excersize is a problem for you, ask yourself this:
- If I didn't excersize tomorrow, what would happen?
- If your answer is logical (such as nothing, or I would have less energy) then in isn't likely that you have a problem.
- If your answer is illogical (such as "I will get so fat," etc) than that may be a signal that you have a problem.
Those with Compulsive Overexcersize feel guily when they can not find time to excersize, and often do not eat if they have not previously excersized. Most people excersize for fun and to be healthy, but those with an Excersize Disorder do it to re-shape their body.
As with other eating disorders, they are attempting to numb the underlying feelings. Many athletes have an excersize disorder, but it is rarely reconized. Compulsive Overexcersize is very dangerous, especially in combination with anorexia and bulimia.
